Threads are like plants. If you don't revive them, they die. ;P
I don't mind continuing discussions 9 years later... The op throws a seed and people build on the discussion? Why not, even if the op is gone forever. We're not.
If not, why not auto-close them after a certain time? What is considered too old?

The thing is, for things like games, the conditions change. Patches are released. Mods are discontinued or added or heavily modified.
It's typically best to start a new thread if a decent amount of time has progressed to ensure that what is being discussed isn't already outdated.
