Adopting a Unicorn as LTW

So my teen Sim had a wish to see a wild horse. One evening before bed after seeing his sister grown into a teen, I happened to notice a horse walking on the lot across the street from the house (happened to be a fishing pond there). As he got closer, I saw that it was a unicorn! Almost immediately, he got the lifetime wish to adopt a unicorn.

Since LTWs are generally a long-term thing, what does he need to do to be able to adopt this beautiful creature? What can be done with it? Will I need to build a fence/barn/etc to house it?

To adopt a unicorn, you’ll first need to befriend it. You can start off by watching it, then move up to things like talking to it an rubbing its neck. The option to invite the unicorn to your household will only appear once you’ve reached “Friend” status or higher.

The unicorn will say that you must prove yourself to be “a friend to all creatures” - be Best Friends Forever with at least 3 creatures: Sim, cat, dog, horse, or a combination of any of these.

As for abilities: one of my favourite Sim youtubers, onlyabidoang, has put together this really informative (and funny) video:

Unicorns have the same basic needs as horses, and though a box stall isn’t absolutely necessary (they can just sleep out in the open like a horse can), you might find one useful if your Sims have the gardening skill. Hope I helped :>

So he happened to see it at night at the pond. He needs to get to bed soon. If he leaves it now, will it come back? I'm hesitant to choose this LTW for him but know he can change it down the road if it doesn't work out. Just trying to figure out if it's one of those that's super hard to reach plus I know nothing about horses and less than that about unicorns.

EDIT: Great video that answered most of my questions. Thanks for posting that! So it sounds like I can adopt this unicorn and let her go back to the wild later if I want. Interesting about the magic abilities!

EDIT AGAIN: So my teen adopted a cat to get started on what he needs to eventually adopt a unicorn. His sister just rolled the lifetime want to be an ark builder and wants to have 20 pets (2 of 10 different kind). I thought that pets count against house total. How could she have so many pets?

Only dogs, cats, and horses count towards the household total and (without mods to increase the limits) you can have 6 of those. The other kinds of animals that should be counted here -- birds, rodents, reptiles, butterflies, etc. do not count towards the household total. The LTW is flaky, I've seen many reports where a lot of effort was put into acquiring all of these animals but one or more of them just weren't "registering" towards the total counts, but for others it just seems to work. Also, as I understand it, all of the animals have to be alive and registered towards the totals all at once, which can be a bit tricky with the minor pets.

In addition: the unicorns are fully racing and jumping skilled.

I just watched this again and I'm 99.9% sure this is the same person who streams for another game I play: Shroud of the Avatar.

So is the total number of people/pets for a household 8 and 6 of those can be pets?

In an unmodded game with the Pets EP:
Max number of people = 8
Max number of pets = 6
Max number of total people/pets sims = 10

NRaas has mods that allow these restrictions to be lifted. Which ones to use/have depend on how one wants to overstuff these households, how they wish to play them, and what the other households in town are allowed to do. Many of us have all of these mods in play for other reasons anyway.

I am currently unmodded so 10 it is. I'm not a modder fan but know that at some point I'll have to in order to keep my game running well. Thanks as always for your excellent information, @igazor!
