Ok... I am feeling accomplished. I wrote out almost 1/2 my first post for my new SimLit... built one set. It's going slowly but I think that is appropriate for now. Good night all, it's almost 2 am here and I have a 4 year old who is going to school tomorrow!
If you have characters that aren't native English speakers, having them speak in their mother language here and there makes them more real, imo. The key is not to overdo it. It's not fun to read whole paragraphs in a language one does not understand. A few of sentences is fine.

I like to write from the pov of the characters. I still write in third person, but I write from their pov nonetheless. This means that the non-native English speakers, like Alex, one of the lead protagonists, will be thinking in his mother-tongue and he maybe speaking in his mother-tongue at times, but we will still be reading English because I wished to make the experience of reading authentic. What the character understands, we understand. However, I have experimented with the rhythm of Alex's language at times, to stay true to the experience of the way Alex will be thinking and speaking in his mother tongue.
However, if we were to switch to Henry who does not understand Alex's mother tongue, if Alex was to speak in his native tongue we would be reading the language in Alex's mother-tongue because we'd be in Henry's pov who doesn't understand it.
We made up a language for our Alien Adoption Collab ! Vingihoplo ! It's got syntax and everything ! Anyway , yes! Of course ! A lot of stories mix in languages as they fit!

This is my pov on it. If the person who's POV it is understands then put it in English but if they don't understand then put it in the other language.
I think the only way I can relate this to my characters would be if Connor were to overhear Ron having a conversation with Claire in the other language he's (Ron's) fluent in but Connor isn't.
