Welp, got the exterior on the brother's house done. Still need to finish up the inside (about half done) but love how it's turned out so far

@ElleDaes I'm sorry :s I hope you have time to rebuild, annoying as rebuilding is it often gives tons of fresh ideas

@creativemetaphor I really like your backstory and the fact you managed to fit an insane amount of walls in for that budget! :hushed: The white birdcage is a lovely touch so is the lumber room, it never occurred to me to use the log pile inside, fantastic! The brother's house is looking pretty epic so far too!

@mederouin would never have thought to use the greenhouse items like that! Amazing! :worried:

@Kgaff Lovely turquoise, very picturesque and homely. Especially the awesome garden alcove and the clutter :)

@Kesminlix Your house looks so relaxing and calm that I'd never be able to summon the energy to leave :relieved:

OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM #201 - The Hawthorne Project Part II
    NAME: AlphaFen
    LINK TO LOT: Jonquille Cottage
    LINK TO MEDIA: Pics
    OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: Not entered
LEVEL: Intermediate, due to the fact that I’ve been building for a while now rather than any form of competence. I will not be offended if you feel beginner is more suitable
LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: Size: 15 x 20. Address: plonked by me in Hidden Springs. Cost: 29,998 blood, sweat and constant redecorates
    LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS:
Client traits: Loner, Virtuoso, Family Friendly, Artistic and Eco-Friendly
Thinking behind the build: An old cottage that provides solitude in the countryside for Julia while being a plumbob’s throw from the Hedges. The cottage was in a run down state and needed a complete overhaul giving Julia a chance to not see it as “charity” but as a project to give new life to a piece of sim heritage. She spent many happy hours scouring flea markets and craft fairs for second hand furniture to upcycle and personalize her new home with. This allowed her to combine saving money and the planet, while hopefully giving an element of shabby chic that is in keeping with the cottage’s original features. Plus all that furniture painting provided a fun family activity (and a lot of mess!).

Though this is very much meant to be Julia’s haven the downstairs is large and open to provide space for when the kids do come round. Upstairs is her private sanctuary where she can do yoga on the balcony or invite close friends up for tea. All items required are included. However, the athletic item is a kicky bag (on the end table in the lounge, where one of the kids left a frisbee) which you may not be able to see.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Yes please, any pointers would be appreciated

I love that you unlurked @AlphaFen. I left you lots of kudos on your thread. The tea on the balcony and the outside rocker and easel are purfect for enjoying the great garden and views of the pond. I really love the walkway and how you split the garden that way! This is just a treasure worth keeping! It's in my game already.

    #BnS202 - A Fairy Tale Cottage
    vnGXe0w.png

As you breeze into the studio after a two-hour lunch (you’re entitled!), you can’t help but be thankful that Rose is back from her vacation. You notice a very thin, plain looking young woman with a pleasant smile sitting quietly in the waiting area. Rose whispers, “She’s your 2 o’clock appointment. She got here an hour early!”

You whisper back, “Give me a minute, and then send her in.”

Rose escorts her into your office and offers her something to drink.

“Oh my!” she says, “I don’t know… I…” as if somehow asking for anything was the biggest imposition in the world.

You say to her, “I was just going to have a cup of tea. Will you join me?”

“Why yes, thank you. If it’s not too much trouble…”

“No trouble at all!” you reassure her.

As Rose is getting the tea, you take a quick glance at your appointment book and discover that the young woman sitting opposite you is one Louise Ehrmantraut.

“So, Ms Ehrmantraut,” you say as Rose serves the tea, “how may we help you?”

She sips her tea and takes a few moments to gather the courage to speak. “Well… I mean… that is, I heard that you help people with… well… not just rich people.”

“That’s right,” you smile. “We help people no matter what the budget.”

Finally, after a long pause and a few more sips of tea, she begins her story, “You should know that I work at the Willow Creek Nursing Home as an aide. I really love my work. I do! The residents are fascinating. Everyone has a story to tell. But there is—I should say—was a man there (he passed just a week ago) who was my favorite. I know I shouldn’t have favorites, but Jack Nimble was. He had the best stories about his life and I could sit for hours listening to him. Anyway, as I said, he passed recently.”

“I’m so sorry,” you murmur sympathetically.

“Thank you!” Louise smiles gratefully. “So I was surprised when a man in a suit showed up two days ago at the door of the trailer I rent in Sunset Valley. He said he was Frank O’Pinyon from the law firm of Dewey Cheatham & Howe. He said that Mr. Nimble had left me §20,000! I couldn’t believe it! I’ve never had any kind of money like that! And that got me thinking that I’d really like to get out of that trailer and buy a place of my own in Sunset Valley so that I could walk to work. I know §20,000 isn’t very much, but…”

“We have worked with smaller budgets than that!” you interject. “What sort of a house would you like?”

“Well… I like to read, you know, fantasy and romance,” she smiles blushing. “I’ve always sort of pictured myself in a little cottage—sort of like in a fairy tale.” She blushes even more.

“That’s a lovely idea!” you reassure her again. “And a fitting tribute to your friend who left you the bequest.”

“Thank you! You’ve been so kind!”

You continue to discuss her needs, and as you see her out, you say to her, “Ms Ehrmantraut, you are about to become the heroine of your own story!”

    THE BRIEF:

Create a small, fairy tale cottage for Louise on a lot in Sunset Valley. The cottage needs a place for her to sleep, to cook, to eat, and to read. The lot should include at least one bookshelf and a toilet, sink and bathtub or shower. Suitable landscaping for a fairy tale cottage should also be included!

BUDGET: §20,000 = Lot Cost + Building Cost

Hint: when building a starter home, terrain paint and the debug menu (cheat: "testingcheatsenabled true" and "buydebug on") are your friends!

SIM CHALLENGE: Create Louise Ehrmantraut. She is a young adult. Her aspiration is to be Super Popular, and she has the Bookworm trait. All other traits are up to you. Show her enjoying her new cottage and/or living life!

The deadline for this challenge is 1st June 2018 ** [no later than 23:59:59 EDT/New York Time]

@aricarai I'm so glad you entered! What a perfect little home!! Those front windows are spectacular.

@ElleDaes I'm so glad you managed to either salvage or rebuild! What a clever bathroom layout, and the rest is very spacious.

I am one of those who didn't use the pull-up bar, I'm not even sure which pack it comes with but I don't have it. LOL

@AlphaFen I'm glad you liked it! Thanks to careful use of the roof tool I didn't use as many walls as it may seem, but it did mean I had to skimp in a few other areas I had been hoping to do something with. I also only used 3 actual fence pieces, the rest were buydebug free :)

I really love yours, a sort of Dutch feel to it, I think? Looks very cozy :)
  • AlphaFFrogAlphaFFrog Posts: 1,250 Member
@aricarai Wow, just wow :hushed: A ballet bar is so fitting! And the colours are so soft and gorgeous, I love how you juxtaposition them with the rock walls. I also love that there's a 26% chance I just used juxtaposition correctly in a sentence :*

@ElleDaes :star: Hooray for the saved build :star: Great bathroom ideas :)

@creativemetaphor Ah I know the debug fence you mean! Nifty! And thank you very much :) It's not intentionally Dutch. It was meant to be a run down ye olde English cottage and somehow it morphed into something continental, possibly even French. Probably not helped by the fact I called it something French :|

@creativemetaphor: You got so much into your beautiful home for Julia. I love that trick you do with the logs behind the fireplace and I'm amazed you were able to get two bedrooms in and still have loads of space. That computer desk chair is super cute; where's it from? And that bath trick with the shelf over it is so awesome! May have to use that sometime
    - The brother's house looks AMAZING! Jaw dropping in fact! I can't wait to see the rest of it. I love the massive drop down in the back! It's stunning

@mederouin: Fab use of CFE and and the terrain tools. I like how you built the greenhouse all around the central building. Very clever. And goodness me, how you managed to fit in a laptop, I'll never know!

@ciane: I'd wish you'd officially enter! Your build turned out really cute; I like the exterior and the loft space is a very nice touch. You fit in a lot of high end items and two bathrooms...holy smokes!

@Kesminlix: I LOVE your kitchen. I know it's small, but it doesn't feel that way due to the open space of the dining room. In fact, the whole place is spacious. You've done beautifully m'dear

@Kgaff: What a cute home. I love how open it is. I think my favorite area is the garden space with the little shed for the tools. That's so clever

@AlphaFen: I love your garden. It's beautifully landscaped and well thought out. The wishing well is a lovely touch! And the balcony with the tea set and easel overlooking the garden is so cute! I think the kitchen area is my favorite! Fab job m'dear

@ElleDaes: Did you use curtains instead of walls for the bathroom? If so, that's such a cool little trick! And holy smokes, what a massive kitchen! Also, I like the front walkway up to the house. What kind of flooring is that?

@aricarai I'm so glad you entered! What a perfect little home!! Those front windows are spectacular.

I know, it's been awhile! I've actually been in a MASSIVE building slump! I'm hoping that I'm over it now  I love those windows, too! I was going to try to stay away from CC for this challenge as I'll be building and filming this cottage for my channel without a budget, but once I got those windows stuck in my head, nothing else seemed to look as good.

Haha, you always do make me laugh! I think I'm more than 26% sure that you've used that word correctly in a sentence  Thank you so much for the lovely comments. The ballet barre is a great space saver and yeah, it just sorta worked for the cottage!

I love that trick you do with the logs behind the fireplace and I'm amazed you were able to get two bedrooms in and still have loads of space.

Thank you! That was also part of my second design, originally the bathroom was larger and in that corner, and the main bedroom was a bit larger as well, but it seemed off scale for the rest of the cottage and I ended up redoing it to put a second little guest bed in.
That computer desk chair is super cute; where's it from?

    Bangalor High-back Chair
And that bath trick with the shelf over it is so awesome!

That is also a new favorite of mine! I actually got the idea from wading through thousands of pinterest images on shabby chic! (just like the brief said  ) I just slapped my forehead like how had I not thought of that yet? So big kudos to @BuildnShare for the thing about pinterest!

The brother's house looks AMAZING! Jaw dropping in fact! I can't wait to see the rest of it. I love the massive drop down in the back! It's stunning

I am so tickled with how that is turning out! Just like I imagined it and so much better than I thought I'd actually manage! I'll finish it (and even put it on the exchange :o ) after I finish the fairy tale house for this month's challenge - though that shouldn't take too much longer, everything is built and landscaped, just fussing with decor and a few item waffles (do I want this chair or that chair... do I want it on this wall or maybe on that wall... hmmmm) until I hit that painfully low 20k budget.

I love that 26% chance, which of course was a strong exaggeration! (Oh no, not YOU!) I'm sure you know that juxtaposition is a noun and juxtapose is the verb. Of course, in your second sentence you used juxtaposition correctly, just not accurately; since, you know, the correct word for the first sentence is juxtapose. A redo of the sentence with juxtaposition might be:
"I love how you have placed those soft, gorgeous colors in juxtaposition with the rock walls!"

And now, I'll take off that Education degree and English major hat and put on my Art major one. I do agree that the colors are awesome and I love the contrast as well.

You know I had to try this one. Here's what I did:

    https://2sim3.wordpress.com/other/ft/

I put it on a 10x10 that I added to Riverview instead of Sunset Valley because that's where I'm playing now.

Aw, both your builds are just darling.
@ciane , I would never have thought to do a tower. Great thinking outside the box and I absolutely love the soft colour palette.
@creativemetaphor , your build looks so rustic and cosy and you got in so much landscaping in that space.
    Well done both of you!
