So, if you are tech savvy and feel like moving registry keys to a backup !and NOT cleaning the computer registry and thus losing those keys!, then you might accomplish the same on your own.
The thought is that moving the keys will keep your game from unlocking the content. Then, finding the keys later (after they are moved back) will then unlock the content.
Remember that ANY mistakes in a registry can be very hazardous, but as you are simply moving files, you SHOULD be okay.
Note that there are two locations (both Electronic Arts\Sims and Sims) for each of the packs.
If you decided to try that, let me know if it worked for you.
REMEMBER: Running cccleaner after moving registry files might result in an inability to move those registry files back.
Thanks for all the info, Ciane. I use SimGameSelect on my desktop and love it, was really disappointed it didn’t work with Steam. That’s interesting the way it works, never understood that, was just thankful for it! The manual way sounds a little over my head messing around with registry keys. But everything seems over my head until I try! For now I’ll just uninstall Pets from Steam.
I love the idea of any game starter. I’m shocked there’s a tool like that out there that I’d never heard of! I’m going to try it out on my desktop. I have 5 separate EA folders and I’m always switching them out. My desktop can handle everything but I don’t always want to play everything.
Thanks for researching that and for all your helpful advice.
@ZeeGee as long as you plan to uninstall Pets, it won't hurt to just move the registry keys for it. You just right click on the Pets file in the sims folder shown earlier and select cut. Then go to a backup folder and hit paste. Do that again for the sims folder within the EA folder just as shown in the example for WA. When you load your game, the pets stuff should all be absent, but everything else SHOULD play nicely.
Just note that if you played a game with pets installed, then that game will be greyed out and you won't be able to load it. However, if you start a new game and save it and then quit, you can COPY an old .nhd file from your old save folder to the new one. You can do that for each world and save you want to copy over. However, if they had pets running around, then, of course, that will impact your save and maybe you won't be able to play it until you reactivate the pet keys.
Keeping your old saves unplayed should keep them safe and retrievable, but copying them to a location outside of the sims folder will help keep them safer!
Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be okay as long as you understand that just having an SP installed will make any save grey out when you uninstall it. So, your story could be negatively impacted just by uninstalling pets. It's possible that copying over the .nhd (neighboorhood) file to a fresh save will allow you to continue an old save BUT any places where wild animals were running amok and spawning might cause problems in a new save. I'm not sure how effective the NRaas mods are with that. I've only ever started new saves for when I "disabled" the other SPs/SPs. And, I've only copied over the old hood data when I switched from DL to disc version (I think).
Okay, I’ll try it then! I don’t play on my laptop much anymore and only have one save. I’m not particularly attached to it. What I wanted to do is a legacy type game and add EPs as it progresses so I’m going to try this. Thanks again!
I googled how to get the registry edit window open, but I can't find those files, or any other files associated with Electronic Arts. I did searches and just looked through the folders. I searched for 'pets' 'electronic arts' 'the sims 3'. Nothing.
See if this helps you. Remember that there is the option to hide folders, so you might have these folders normally hidden?!
In case of hidden folders:
1
Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
2
Select View > Options > Change folder and search options.
3
Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.
And, your goal is to simple move out the registry keys, not delete them. That should let you just copy the keys back in again as you wish.
The key part is: press Start, type 'regedit', navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sims(Steam)'
Here you'll see the expansion packs and stuff packs and additional folders!
Also key is the fact that a suggestion is made to backup your registry before you begin in case of any error!!!
I don't know if I'd wait @Odonata68. Some people are having problems installing store stuff as well as exchange stuff. If you have the downloaded files, it should be okay to install later. I just prefer to find out earlier, rather than later, if I'll have any problems.
Good point! Especially since the store never seems to get fixed!
Thank you.
It WORKED!!! Thank you, Ciane! First I unhid the folders, found the right entry, it wouldn't let me copy/paste the registry entry so I exported it, then deleted the Pets entry. Started up the game, my save worked fine, just got the message 'some items are missing' or something like that. Pets was gone. I quit the game, clicked on the Pets registry backup to reinstall, went back into game and Pets is back! So now I'm going to create backups for all the individual EPs. Yay, thank you!
Yay! I'm glad it worked for you. It seems such a simple thing as long you understand that if you EVER mess up the registry, you could be in a world of hurt. So, always backup first and confirm afterwards.
Wow I can’t believe it has been since January since I was last here! This thread just shows how great I am at procrastinating! In my defense I sprained my foot in feb and have been in a bit of a funk since my bunny died at the end of march beginning of April and couldn’t bring myself to do any of my projects! (Of all the months for Daisy to die in she had to go in the one with Easter holiday there were reminders of her everywhere!) Ok I am out of my funk and ready to get back to this! I am on my iPad again and it seems it was ok for me to do this last time so I’m going to post a bunch of links to sets here so when I get on my computer I can just download them without having to look for everything! @ciane Thanks for letting me post these long list here it does make it easier to look up the sets on my iPad and then just use links to download them on my computer !
@ciane (hugs back ) Thank you I certainly could use the hug! I don’t know when I will be able to change my avatar I don’t think any time soon though! About a month before Daisy died my niece gave me her bunny (Buttercup )because she just got a puppy and he is a hunting breed so she didn’t want to take a chance of his hunting instincts kicking in around her bunny! Buttercup would stay with Daisy so often that before this she seemed half mine already so I am not totally Bunny less at least and Buttercup comforts me quite a bit .
Hey @ciane.
I bought Barnacle Bay & Worlds combo [Monte Vista & Hidden Springs] and got a code inside the box, so it won't be through the store - still shows the 'buy' button. How do I reinstall these worlds using your method? Do I have to go into purchase history and do it that way?
(Sorry if this has been asked before).
@JennyferLx You have to redeem your codes in the sims 3 store to get the worlds. If you all ready did that and it's not working, log out of your account, clear all your internet browsing history, including IE even if you don't use it and log back into your account. if the worlds are still not there , contact EA directly, they may need to fix your account
Great advice from @phoebebebe13 as always! Redeeming your codes will make the worlds' download icon active for you directly from the store, though sometimes it isn't instantaneous and logging out and back should make them show up. And, if you have problems logging back in, you do sometimes have to "reset" Internet Explorer under the advanced internet options AND check the box to delete personal settings.
As far as how to install once you see the download option for them:
Move out all your other .ebc files in the dccache folder and then install so the computer puts them in the 0 file. Then, look at the numbers of the files you moved out. Try renumbering the 0 to one up from the number of your last .ebc file. Then, move the other .ebc files back in and load your game. See if you can load the worlds and see everything you are suppose to see.
I prefer the world installations be among the first files installed, so all my worlds are dcdb0.ebc through dcdb5.ebc. Then, come the compilations, venues, and large sets. So all the single items are installed last. My reasoning is that if anything takes a hit and doesn't load, it'll be more insignificant.
They show up in purchase history but still ask me to purchase them when on the store pages.
About to start installing the store using your method so I’ll just go into purchase history when installing them then.
It looks like you'll have to contact EA to get that rectified, if you want to go through that hassle. As long as you can download from your purchase history, you should be okay; but that's too weird that you still have buy buttons on the world pages!
It is sad that the store content, and saves, are tied to specific versions like that @ZeeGee. When I bought discs to replace download versions, I remember that I couldn't just use all my old files. Copying over my old files didn't work. I had to reinstall. BUT, when I got a new system, I was able to just copy over files. So, the upgrade to Win 10 was painless compared to just replacing some EP/SPs.
So I'm baaaaaaaaack I didn't have the heart to reinstall everything a few months ago, but I'm sufficiently annoyed now Before my stuff started uninstalling, my hubby installed the 70s, 80s, 90s SP for me. Do you think this is why deleting my dcCache files, etc. and replacing with my backed up ones isn't working for me?
That could be, but yet shouldn't be. Any change in how you installed your items (disc, download, different product code) does affect install. I bought discs for my previous DD EPs and I couldn't just copy over my old files or install from my backup files. BUT, when I updated to win 10, I could. So, just adding an SP to your game should not have affected your ability to just copy over your old files, BUT maybe it did.
Besides copying in the dccache files, you also have to copy over the old installedworlds files and relevent library files. The library files are needed for the venues. The installedWorld files is for the store worlds. Then, you need the ccmerged file from dcbackup for your premium content items to work correctly.
Here are some more links I got on my iPad so it will go easier on to put on my computer! I did have to find the Happy Holiday Presents set with the car in my purchase history so I don’t know if it will work right for anyone else . ( the weird sentence below is so I can line this group of links with where they are in ciane’s list it is what she writes right before the group on the original thread.
And these were "special" sets with registration or holidays:
It's been over a month since anyone has posted on here, but if anyone's still around, I have a weird issue.
So, today, I decided to bite the bullet and start my store install. Everything was going fine until I started installing the venues. In the launcher, some installed venues have the little store icon next to them along with its name (as I would expect). But some venues have the asterisk indicating CC even though I downloaded from the store page and installed from launcher and some of these don't even have a name. Just a single number where the name should be. The Now&Then manor doesn't have either icon and the thumbnail looks like a small box. I haven't checked if they're affected in game yet.
Has anyone had this happen when installing venues? Thanks in advance.
@Odonata68 Don't know if Ciane is around so I'll tell you the partial answer that I know. The Graham's Pet Swap Shop is the only venue I have that shows the store icon. The rest of mine all show the asterisk. They do install fine in game. I don't know why this happens. The Now&Then Manor showing as a small box means that it won't install. It is an incompatible version usually. What usually works to sort this out is to redownload the item.
The other issue of just having a single number instead of the name, are you talking about in game? A few of my venues are like this. It doesn't show the name, only a number. You just have to recognize what it is by the picture.

Cian's reinstalling store thread http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/866577/how-to-install-store-items/p1
The other issue of just having a single number instead of the name, are you talking about in game? A few of my venues are like this. It doesn't show the name, only a number. You just have to recognize what it is by the picture.
