It’s a Sims 3 only homemade gift exchange and as always, is CC Free!

    Please add to your calendar!!!

Sign Ups: Sunday, March 11 to Saturday, March 24 ending at 6 pm (EST)
Late Buddy Letters will not be accepted!

Buddy Names: Each Buddy name will be sent via private message and should arrive by 6 pm (EST) on Sunday, March 25.

ALL check-ins need to be done via the thread.
Do not send a private message or post on my Sims 3 My Page wall.

Check-in ONE: Before or by the end of Monday, March 26.
This lets me know that you have received your Buddy name.
If you haven’t received a name and need it re-sent, please let me know ASAP!

Check-in TWO: Before or by the end of Tuesday, April 3.
This is just a general check-in to let me know that you’re doing okay.

If you need help with anything or foresee any problems, be sure to ask or mention this! General questions should be asked in the thread, but Buddy specific ones must be sent to me via private message.

Check-in THREE: Before or by the end of Tuesday, April 17.
Your gift should be almost ready to go at this time.

VERY Important!!!: If you miss one of the above check-ins without letting me know beforehand, you will receive a private message. If you do not respond by the date listed in the private message, you will be eliminated from this gift exchange and won’t receive a gift. The person who had you will be asked if they would like to gift the Buddy you were assigned. The only exception against elimination is letting me know ahead of time that you will miss a deadline.

GIFTING Time: Thursday, April 26 through Sunday, April 29.
If you are unable to gift during this time, let me know ASAP!

Remember, this is a Sims 3 only gift exchange ~ NO Sims 4 gifts allowed.

The rules have been categorized in the hopes that they’ll be easier to read.
Be sure to check each spoiler tag!

    Hello, Buddy!
If you signed up for a previous gift exchange and didn’t give a homemade gift, you will not be paired up in this exchange. Sorry, no exceptions!

B1. Join by posting a letter (see post 4 for the form letter that must be used!).

B2. If you get a new store item or pack for your game, please edit your Buddy letter AND post in the thread that changes were made.

B3. Keep your Buddy Name a secret once you receive your name via private message.

    B4. Follow the check-in dates!

    B5. Regularly check the thread.

B6. Asking a question if fine. Copping an attitude is not.
Rude or mean behavior will not be tolerated. If seen, I will remove you at my discretion.

B7. If something comes up (ex: personal, computer problems, etc.), please let me know ASAP via PM so arrangements can be made for your Buddy.

    Make Gifts!
M1. No custom content is allowed. All gifts will be custard checked, no exceptions.
Please refer to the FAQs post on how to start a clean, no CC game.

M2. You must make at least one homemade gift for your Buddy.
This is not something that is bought from the Sims 3 store.

    M3. Gift Guideline:
*If making one gift, BUILD something for your Buddy.
*If making more than one (not required!), one gift must be a build, but the rest can be additional builds and/or sims and/or pets.
*If making more than one gift (again, not required!), please look at rule G5.

M4. Buddy Letters are suggestions and not a checklist of what will be gifted (or received!) during gifting time.

    Gifting Time!
G1. You must gift and be gifted.

G2. When a gift is being given, post a message in the thread.
    This message must include:
    Your Buddy’s name
Gift number (very helpful to Buddy & host!)
    Link to the studio upload
    Screenshots showing off the gift.

G3. In the gift message, it’s best to put more than 3 screenshots inside a spoiler tag to prevent page jumping as pictures load and to help with page loading times.

The way it works looks like this:
    [ spoiler ] pictures and accompanying text go here [ /spoiler ]
Remember to remove the spaces before and after each bracket!

G4. To keep things cozy, gifts will be given in this thread. Do not make a separate gifting thread for your Buddy.

G5. Gift one gift a day maximum. Gifting lots of gifts might be nice, but it can be overwhelming!

G6. If you download or add a gift to your favorites list, please ‘Recommend It’.

    G7. Everybody loves compliments!
Gifts take time & effort so let Buddies know what caught your eye.

    Please use this form!
It’s a guide to give your Buddy as much information as possible. Include any additional info you think would help them get to know your way of playing the game.

    The more details, the better!!!

Remember, this is a guide and not a step-by-step wishlist.
You might or might not get something that is mentioned here.

As always, your Buddy is looking forward to creating something truly unique for you!

    Buddy Letter form:

    Username:

Link to your Sims 3 My Page: (This is to help me when Buddy pairings are being made, especially if I don’t know you very well. If you’d rather not put your link here, please send me a PM with this information)

I have installed the following Expansion Packs:

I have installed the following Stuff Packs:

I own the following Store Content:

I own the following EA-made Worlds: (Please note that others might not feel comfortable using a custom world so please list only those made by EA)

Some of my favorite colors are:

I really don’t like this color:

I love to use items from this set:

I prefer to play in this EA-made World:

I enjoy this style of build the most: (Example: Craftsman)

I really don’t want this in my game:

I would or would not like lots in the following sizes: (If you’re a fan of tiny lots, then here is a great place to mention that! If larger lots make your game lag while loading them, be sure to mention that!)

    I want/don’t want berry sims:

I want/don’t want occult sims: (Be sure to specifically list those that you are fine with or mention which ones you don’t want to see in your game!)

I want/don’t want pets in the household: (Like cats more than dogs? Prefer cute puppies to horses? Don’t want any critters? Mention it!)

Do you want your sims and/or pets skilled up for you? If so, how much? (Example: A couple of points, but not maxed out)

Are there certain skills you want skilled because you really like having them ready when you start with a new sim or household? (Example: A few points in Cooking would be nice so sims don’t burn the waffles and can make more than a mean bowl of cereal!)

Are there particular skill items that you really like having in a build? (Example: I love having sims that can cook, garden, paint and write so having those skilling objects would be awe-sim!)

Other: (Describe here anything that you’d really like that might or might not have been previously mentioned!)

This text is to certify that I have read ALL the posts and will follow the rules for participation as well as pay attention to important dates.
    ~ end of form ~

If you’re having trouble figuring out what to say in your letter, peek at the previous gift exchange for ideas.

    Don’t worry. Have FUN!

What is a homemade gift exchange?
Each participant (Buddy) writes a letter mentioning things they would like or not like to have in their game ~ each Buddy then gets paired with another Buddy and secretly makes a gift for him/her (this can be a build, pet or sim) ~ during gifting time, the Buddies reveal themselves and share their gift for their special someone.

    What is a homemade gift?
Something that is created while in-game and not purchased from the Sims 3 store is a homemade gift. A residential or community lot counts. A sim or pet needs more than simply being created in CAS, they should be taken in-game and given a bit of personality. Giving them a few skill points and/or place things in their personal inventory are just a couple of suggestions you might want to consider.

How do I start a clean, no CC game?
1 Rename your “The Sims 3” folder to something else. I often use “The Sims 3 old”.
2 Start the game. Since it can’t find the folder, it will proceed to make a brand new one and that will be have the factory default settings. It doesn’t contain CC, mods or Sims 3 store content.
3 Exit the game. Your folder will have the new folder labeled “The Sims 3”.
4 Add whatever Sims 3 store content you’d like to use in the gift for your Buddy.
5 Unless you’re familiar with mods and whether they create custom content, it might be best to not use them.

MiaSkywalker has suggested another method that removes most of the CC from a game (CC can stick to a .sim file and will be transferrable through the Exchange).

    Her method:
1 Remove or rename the mods folder.
2 Rename the extension of all .dbc files in the DCCache folder to something else, like XXX.dbc.backup (Note: .ebc is store content and .dbc is CC).

How do I post an image?
Above the “Leave a Comment” box is a toolbar with formatting options. The one that looks like a picture is used to post an image. Move your mouse cursor over it and the message shows “Image”. Click on it and paste or type your image link location in the box. Image should be seen when “Preview” button is pressed.

How do I post a link?
Above the “Leave a Comment” box is a toolbar with formatting options. The one that looks like two interlocking chains in a link is used to post a link. Move your mouse cursor over it and the message shows “Url”. Click on it and paste or type your url location in the box (TIP: remember to remove the text that automatically appears before entering your information!). Press the “ok” button. Link should be seen when “Preview” button is pressed.

If you want the link title to be other than the link address, type in your changes to the wording that is located before [*/url] <= Note: There isn’t an asterisk in the line of code, just in this example to keep the example from showing up oddly

    Is CAP custom content?
Looking over previous gift exchanges, this little nugget was discovered. TnT_Terry wrote, “CAP is NOT considered CC at all (it's an EA/Sims 3 program), but will definitely show separately in custard. Most importantly, when using patterns on any lot/sim/object it is always best to link to every pattern used because they don't always transfer with upload.”

However, please note that there are Buddies who don’t want anything that shows up separately in custard so it is probably best not to include them.

I can't wait to see who signs up! :) I may join in, although I don't know that I have any particular build wish lists right now. I like creating things for other people, so this would give me a chance to do that.

    Buddy Letter form:

    Username: Jessabeans

I have installed the following Expansion Packs: All

I have installed the following Stuff Packs: All

I own the following Store Content: All

I own the following EA-made Worlds: All

Some of my favorite colors are: Cool colors; blues and greys

I really don’t like this color:
    none

I love to use items from this set:
Club Vaindenburger is my favorite set, but really a mix of several to suit the build is great, especially recoloring items in unexpected ways to find new uses for them.

I prefer to play in this EA-made World:
    Hidden Springs or Aurora Skies

I enjoy this style of build the most: (Example: Craftsman) Cape Cod, Cabins, Victorian, Norwegian Modern

I really don’t want this in my game: Werewolf Sims

I would or would not like lots in the following sizes: I usually don't play on larger than 40x40, unless most of the space is used by landscaping. I usually only use 64x64s for Equestrian lots.

I want/don’t want berry sims: They are adorable, but I don't really use them myself.

    I want/don’t want occult sims:
I adore witches and fairies, I don't care for werewolves, zombies, mummies. Vampires are okay.

I want/don’t want pets in the household:
I love horses, cats and dogs are good too.

Do you want your sims and/or pets skilled up for you? If so, how much? Any really, fresh out of CAS is good for adding to families or skilled families with a little funds are nice to pickup and play.

Are there certain skills you want skilled because you really like having them ready when you start with a new sim or household? I usually make sure my sims have at least basic cooking skills, gardening is nice too.

Are there particular skill items that you really like having in a build?
I like having a small garden or a place for a garden, and a bookcase.

Other: I really enjoy recreational community lots, and Sims families to become townies.

Link to your Sims 3 My Page: (This is to help me when Buddy pairings are being made, especially if I don’t know you very well. If you’d rather not put your link here, please send me a PM with this information)

I have installed the following Expansion Packs: All (but rarely use Showtime or Into the Future)

I have installed the following Stuff Packs: All BUT Sweet Treats

I own the following Store Content: All

I own the following EA-made Worlds: (Please note that others might not feel comfortable using a custom world so please list only those made by EA) All

Some of my favorite colors are: Purple, neutrals, greys, green, ruby

I really don’t like this color:Yellow, orange, or pastels (except in kid's rms)

I love to use items from this set: I pick & choose, but love the fairytale set

I prefer to play in this EA-made World: Lucky Palms or Moonlight Falls

I enjoy this style of build the most: (Example: Craftsman) Victorian/Gothic

I really don’t want this in my game: Boxy

I would or would not like lots in the following sizes: (If you’re a fan of tiny lots, then here is a great place to mention that! If larger lots make your game lag while loading them, be sure to mention that!) I like lots that are 40x40 or smaller

I want/don’t want berry sims: Do not want, thank you

I want/don’t want occult sims: (Be sure to specifically list those that you are fine with or mention which ones you don’t want to see in your game!) I am not much of a werewolf fan, but I do like witches and fairies

I want/don’t want pets in the household: (Like cats more than dogs? Prefer cute puppies to horses? Don’t want any critters? Mention it!) I am soon to re-start my vampire owned breeding stable, so would welcome Horses over any other pet, if you want to create one.

Do you want your sims and/or pets skilled up for you? If so, how much? (Example: A couple of points, but not maxed out) Up to the gifter.

Are there certain skills you want skilled because you really like having them ready when you start with a new sim or household? (Example: A few points in Cooking would be nice so sims don’t burn the waffles and can make more than a mean bowl of cereal!) I do like sims to be a bit more skilled up in cooking then a point or 2 in the area of their chosen craft.

Are there particular skill items that you really like having in a build? (Example: I love having sims that can cook, garden, paint and write so having those skilling objects would be awe-sim!) I love small gardens, and huge kitchens that you can can veggies, make pizza, bake, and all the wonderous stuff. Just need to make sure there is a pantry to hold it all too. hehe

Other: (Describe here anything that you’d really like that might or might not have been previously mentioned!) Well, I will admit I am starting to look around for a house that is not a mansion, but could handle LOTS of kids. I would like to see if I can do the 100 baby challenge. Going to make the mom a witch so she can take potions to make young again to be able to have all those children. hehe I do like smaller houses so don't have to scroll forever to get to the other side of the house, but not so small that sims get stuck if there are a bunch in a room. Oh and I love saunas!

HIYA ADDY!!! **waves** Thanks ever so much for the heads up! And as I had said ((over in messenger)) COUNT ME IN!! haha

I've been playing so much in 4, that I forgot what it's like to just play around in 3. I haven't built anything in SO long, methinks I'm gonna be a bit rusty. lmao

I saw Mia's post above, and I have to agree with her. I really don't think I have a want or a need for anything right now. But (!), that could change. I mean, I am starting to play (again) in my own built/created world. ;) I don't even know what I did with my *last* letter. (( oi )) ;p

Ok, decided I will join in. I love building, and I haven't actually launched my Sims game in a month or two. This is getting me revved up to play again. :)

    Username: MiaSkywalker

I have installed the following Expansion Packs: All of them

I have installed the following Stuff Packs: All of them. Yes, that includes KPST

I own the following Store Content: All of it

I own the following EA-made Worlds: All of them

Some of my favorite colors are: For this, woods, stones and metal tones, and maybe a splash or two of other colors. My favorite color is purple, but it's not appropriate for what I'm asking for here.

I really don’t like this color: Orange and cyan, at least if more than a splash or two.

I love to use items from this set: Anything from the Make A Wish compilation. The Pets expansion also has some nice items that lend themselves to a medieval feel, if you don't have any items from those store sets.

I prefer to play in this EA-made World: Dragon Valley

I enjoy this style of build the most: Medieval / Fantasy

I really don’t want this in my game: High rise buildings, or anything ultra-modern. Or anything modern or contemporary.

I would or would not like lots in the following sizes: Small lots are preferred, 30x30 or smaller. I would actually REALLY like a lot that's 10x15. (Edit: Or 20x15; I have quite a few of those that are empty.)

I want/don’t want berry sims: No preference, although I usually give berry sims pointy ears and call them elves, or turn them into faeries.

I want/don’t want occult sims: Are you kidding? My main Sim is a witch/faerie hybrid, and her fiancé is a witch/werewolf hybrid. I LOVE occults, except zombies and mummies. (Mummies in a dungeon is fine, I just don't want them wandering around my towns.)

I want/don’t want pets in the household: I prefer cats and horses. The kittens in the game positively make me melt.

Do you want your sims and/or pets skilled up for you? If so, how much? I prefer Sims that have never been played at all, if at all possible.

Are there certain skills you want skilled because you really like having them ready when you start with a new sim or household? Not really, I enjoy the skilling process, so prefer to do it myself.

Are there particular skill items that you really like having in a build? For what I'm going to request, maybe an artist easel, and/or a guitar or violin. I don't want anything else.

    Other: Spoiler because long. ;)
What I'm really looking for are tiny (10x15 and 20x15) medieval NPC homes for a custom world I play. I would like nice curb appeal (pretty outside landscaping), but the inside doesn't have to be fancy. It should have the basics: double bed for parents, 2-4 small beds for kids (bunks are OK, but make sure you play test Sims trying to get onto the top bunks, because there are some weird routing issues that can occur with them), a crib, a stove, a dining table for probably 4, and a bathroom.

Decor that works well are curtains for the windows, knick knacks in the kitchen, a dresser or wardrobe near the bedrooms, and possibly a small mirror or painting. Try to use things that at least look medieval or fantasy-ish. Wood tones help for some furniture, and stone for other things. You may think of some decor that I wouldn't, and that's great! It will make my towns a little less cookie-cutter.

Please NO electronics in the house. That means: No TV, stereo, or computer especially. A fire alarm is OK (it's easy to hide behind a refrigerator with MOO), but you don't need a burglar alarm. I also don't like washers, dryers, microwaves, or elevators.

Obviously a fridge and stove are going to contradict the no electronics rule, but we need them anyway. You can disguise the refrigerator by making it wood (aka a pantry), and the stove can either be one of the medieval looking ones (retronator, coal-burning stove, Gretel's revenge, etc.), or can be done up in stone CASting to look medieval. Make sure there are one or two counters for the cooks to prepare meals on. (I've seen builds without any counters, and then I have to figure out how to add at least one, and it can be a pain if there isn't much room.)

It should be pretty easy to furnish, since there isn't much that I actually want in the house. Ironically, homes for my main Sim have completely different parameters, but I don't like spoiling my NPCs. ;)

If you have room for a small garden that's fine, but it's not required by any means. I'd just like the outside to look really nice. If you want to make the house look like it's for a specific type of crafter (blacksmith, carpenter, baker, etc.) then that's OK, but it doesn't have to be specialized. The family that lives there can always work elsewhere, after all. :)

Sticking to a budget is NOT required by any means. I always use the free real estate cheat to place Sims in my games.

If you're confused by what I mean by medieval, do a Google image search on "medieval cottage" and "medieval town house". It should give you some ideas. :)

If you make me any Sim(s), I love almost all the occult types. (Zombies and mummies are out, though.) Just because my two main Sims aren't vampires doesn't mean I don't like vampires, for instance. I've played households where one or more of the members were vampires or vampire hybrids, and although there are some difficulties playing them at times, they can be fun. One thing I've found is that the Exchange sometimes strips out the occult status of a Sim, which is a little irritating. This is particularly annoying with werewolves, when the creator spends a lot of time working on the werewolf face. (As I always do.) But so long as I know what occult you intend the Sim to be, I can fix it in my game.

Oh! One more thing. No cars or bikes (as it should be apparent by now that I want something medieval), but a broom or two for transportation is OK. Fortunately, brooms take up less space on a lot than either of the others. :)

@MsPrissy88: I'm glad that you joined this time. :) I've seen you playing Sims 4 a lot; I can't really get into that, because they took away some of the sandbox-ness I like from Sims 3. (Like going on a date: I hate it that they tell us when we have to crack a joke, or flirt, or chat, or whatever. What happened to me getting to do what I want on a date?)

I find that I definitely prefer the Sims 3 more sandbox approach to a game, as well as the infinitely customizable aspects of CASting. I've grown to like the graphics in Sims 4, but I wish they had let us keep our sandbox. :)

TRUST ME, I so prefer CAS in 3 than 4. Especially when it comes to decorating. I am a stickler when it comes to wanting stuff to match. I remember when 4 first came out, I had said there was gonna be no way I would use CC in the game. I changed my tune on that. SOME people have been recoloring items, while others have actually *created* newer stuff. So.... yeah. I'm with you with the sandbox.

I've only been playing 4 more, because I went back to playing one of the challenges I had played once before. In fact, whenever I get done with this one, I'll restart another challenge. I don't mind playing "normal", but I get bored too quickly. **as was the case with most people**

Since reinstalling 3 -- for the hundredth time :D lol -- I was actually playing until I suddenly just stopped. Not that there was anything wrong, I think I just hated the lag. I just have to get back to building, tho. That's what I really like doing in 3. ;)B)

I'm still in the process of reinstalling (for what feels like the 100th time too.) I know I should just leave it installed, I know I will come back to it.
  • MiaSkywalkerMiaSkywalker Posts: 3,436 Member
I have a tendency to keep too many things - especially games - installed on my computer. About six months ago I started getting lots of lag on my computer, then discovered I had only about 20 GB free. On a 2TB drive, that's a pretty difficult thing to do. :) Had to uninstall a lot of Steam games that I don't really play in order to clear space.

Have to say, though, that Sims 3 is one of those games I could never even consider uninstalling, even if it took up 2/3 of my hard drive. Love the game too much, lags and all. :)

If you do uninstall and reinstall it a lot, I recommend at least backing up your .ebc files so you don't have to reinstall the store every time you reinstall the game, at least. :D
