    #BnS88 - A Fairy Tale Cottage

As you breeze into the studio after a two-hour lunch (you’re entitled!) you notice a very thin, plain looking young woman with a pleasant smile sitting quietly in the waiting area. Karl whispers, “She’s your 2 o’clock appointment. She got here an hour early!”

You whisper back, “Give me a minute, and then send her in.”

Karl escorts her into your office and offers her something to drink.

“Oh, my!” she says, “I don’t know… I…” as if somehow asking for anything was the biggest imposition in the world.

You say to her, “I was just going to have a cup of tea. Will you join me?”

“Why yes, thank you. If it’s not too much trouble…”

“No trouble at all!” you reassure her.

As Karl is getting the tea, you take a quick glance at your appointment book and discover that the young woman sitting opposite you is one Louise Ehrmantraut.

“So, Ms Ehrmantraut,” you say as Karl serves the tea, “how may we help you?”

She sips her tea and takes a few moments to gather the courage to speak. “Well… I mean… that is, I heard that you help people with… well… not just rich people.”

“That’s right,” you smile. “We help people no matter what the budget.”

Finally, after a long pause and a few more sips of tea, she begins her story, “You should know that I work at the Willow Creek Nursing Home as an aide. I really love my work. I do! The residents are fascinating. Everyone has a story to tell. But there is—I should say—was a man there (he passed just a week ago) who was my favorite. I know I shouldn’t have favorites, but Jack Nimble was. He had the best stories about his life and I could sit for hours listening to him. Anyway, as I said, he passed recently.”

“I’m so sorry,” you murmur sympathetically.

“Thank you!” Louise smiles gratefully. “So I was surprised when a man in a suit showed up two days ago at the door of the trailer I rent in Oasis Springs. He said he was Frank O’Pinyon from the law firm of Dewey Cheatham & Howe. He said that Mr. Nimble had left me §25,000! I couldn’t believe it! I’ve never had any kind of money like that! And that got me thinking that I’d really like to get out of that trailer and buy a place of my own in Willow Creek so that I could walk to work. I know §25,000 isn’t very much, but…”

“We have worked with smaller budgets than that!” you interject. “What sort of a house would you like?”

“Well… I like to read, you know, fantasy and romance,” she smiles blushing. “I’ve always sort of pictured myself in a little cottage—sort of like in a fairy tale.” She blushes even more.

“That’s a lovely idea!” you reassure her again. “And a fitting tribute to your friend who left you the bequest.”

“Thank you! You’ve been so kind!”

You continue to discuss her needs, and as you see her out, you say to her, “Ms Ehrmantraut, you are about to become the heroine of your own story!”

    THE BRIEF:

Create a small, fairy tale cottage for Louise on a lot in Willow Creek [your choice]. The cottage needs a place for her to sleep, to cook, to eat, and to read. The lot should include at least one bookshelf and a toilet, sink and bathtub or shower. Suitable landscaping for a fairy tale cottage should also be included!

BUDGET: §25,000 = Lot Cost + Building Cost

Hint: when building a starter home, terrain paint and the debug menu (cheat: bb.showhiddenobjects) are your friends!

SIM CHALLENGE: Create Louise Ehrmantraut. She is a young adult. Her aspiration is Friend of the World, and she has the Bookworm trait. All other traits are up to you. Show her enjoying her new cottage and/or living life!

Looking forward to participating in this challenge, but I gotta know, why is terrain paint useful? Not that I don't love a green lawn but your hint makes it sound like it could be the difference between sucking, and well, not sucking.
Also, what is the debug menu and how is it useful and used?
oh! oh! one more question! How in the WORLD did you come up with such an exotic last name for Louise? Im assuming it's German? Love the creativity :p

I lied, I actually have another question lol. Isn't there some way to set the spending limit on a lot so that once you reach it you are unable to continue? Or am I doomed to constantly check lot info to see that I haven't spent too much....

    @Pirate

Regarding the debug menu - Are you familiar with using the cheat codes? If you use the bb.showhiddenobjects cheat you will get access to items you wouldn't normally be able to. A large part of these items are the debug items. After using the cheat you can find them in several ways, but the one I always use is to search for the "Aloe Vera Plant". I type Aloe and it normalle comes up as an option. Choose it and you will find it and many other items. Many of these are free to use, and therefore great for a challenge like this. I often use the remote control, or the liqour bottles! It's very good for adding clutter items to give your place some personality, while staying in budget.

(Do keep in mind though, some of the items can be a bit buggy, won't be removed etc if you try and delete them. You will figure that out as you go.)

Reagarding terrain paint - Here they are referring to being creative but for free. If you look at the terrain paint menu, notice that they don't only have grass, but dirt and even different textures of stone/flooring. This is great to use instead of actual flooring (which costs money). Dirt paint is great to use around the edges of the house, or under plants/trees to add realism. You can also have a lot of fun using different types of paint together, for example one stone texture as a path, and a different stone texture as a trim/edge to that same path. Here you can add a lot of interest to your lot for no cost, which is very valuable when there is a strict budget. Then you can get away with less trees/plants

Regarding spending limit - Sorry, no. You do actually have to keep checking in and making sure you are on track.

@BuildnShare Correct me if I am wrong here! Or add to it if I have forgotten something

BTW, I love the idea of this challenge, so I will definetly make an effort and try! But not sure how I will go with this crazy budget! lol

Thank you for responding to @pirate, @Laebeth!! Fabulous answers, couldn't have worded them better.

There is, however, kind of a way to manage your budget, if you have a sim on the lot and testingcheats enabled, you can use 'money 25,000' to give yourself the $25,000 budget.

@BuildnShare No problem! And how neat there is a way to manage budgets! I wasn't even aware of that cool little trick

Slight amendment to this advice: You need to figure out what your build budget is and type that figure after "money" in the cheat box, once testingcheats has been enabled. So if the overall budget is §25,000 and you are building on a 20 x 15 lot which costs §1,500, then your build budget is 25000 - 1500 = 23500. So type "money 23500" (without the quote marks) in the cheat box, and then you can keep track of how much you have left to spend as you build!

    A STATEMENT ABOUT DEPRECIATION

We noticed that some people are struggling when working out how much your build actually costs and if playtesting your lot affected the price.

We have always asked you guys to work with the gallery price when building your awesome creations, and using this price means you can safely playtest your lots without fear of running into depreciation (whereby the price gets lower and lower the longer you playtest). When you are building, the little house button on the top left corner of your screen gives you the lot info panel, this is NOT the costing you should be keeping your eye on, this one depreciates with testing. The one you need to keep checking is on your top menu, the 'save to library' button, then the 'save lot' button, this will bring up the screen that you can enter all your details to, hashtags and the like, the cost here is the one you need to pay attention to. Depreciation does not affect the gallery cost, this has been tested in great detail, including with Sim created paintings on the lot. There is one thing to note, though, harvestables will increase the gallery cost, so make sure you've harvested all your plants before checking.

ENTRY DETAILS: To me, Louise seem like a shy woman, who's a romantic at heart. I think she a good sim, because she work as a aide at the Willow Creek Nursing Home and wish to be a friend of the world. My vision of her, is that she's a bit eccentric and has a love for old retro clothing and hairs styles. She not very rich so her clothing are not to luxurious looking, I think.

ENTRY DETAILS: I wanted to do a lot of outdoor living space so only the bathroom and the bedrooms (the second one is being used as a yoga/art room) are enclosed with walls. I tried to make the cottage look like a botanical garden gazebo but a little more 'fairy'. With the magic bean trees in the yard, it seems it would work really well for a plant Sim but haven't tested that yet. There is a small herb garden in the yard and the dining area is in the garden itself. The back of the house opens onto the public garden, which I thought worked out well. I haven't had trouble with people just walking into the living room space or kitchen, which was a concern.

ENTRY DETAILS: This was a challenge indeed! I knew I wanted a fireplace and a pond, but the debug fishing hole bugged out so badly that I had to go for a fountain-pond instead. I focused on the exteriors, trying to make a charming cottage, sort of a place where you could find a fairy godmother and not a witch. Laura has found her favourite reading spot in front of the fireplace, but there is also a place for her to read in the backyard if she would rather stay outside.

I always look at what everyone does for these challenges and I have no clue how you all pull off such detailed awesome looking lots for such a little amount of cash lol. Even using all cost cutting tricks and debug I still struggle every time!

    Thank you so much @kilra0, @ladyalexiel, @fidgetyatom and @linday!
@Ladyalexiel - your Louise is adorable, definitely captured the bookworm!
@linday - your cottage is gorgeous. Definitely the 'fairytale cottage' it's so warm and the gardens are beautiful! Wonderful roofwork too! Fantastic!
@kementari - How incredible charming. That has to be one of the nicest tiny houses I've seen! Love the sitting area and kitchen! Amazing what you did on the budget!

She loves her little garden, so she has some gardening, cooking and charisma skills and I got her the great storyteller trait as she is gregarious and loves to share the stories she reads. She is overly fond of the color pink and is cute, but not what most folk in the gallery would call beautiful. A little clearasil and a change of clothes would pretty her up quite nicely.
