Petition for EA to release the "Create-A-World -- BETA" tool on the Mac platform.

EDIT: Please be sure to look at update #6, as well as #8; we still have much to do.

Okay, I'm honestly not sure whether I should put this in the "Mac Discussions" or "Ideas & Feedback" forum, so if a SimGuru wants to move it, I completely understand; I'm putting this in the Mac forum for now though because I believe Mac users will actually see it here.

I have admittedly been waiting for the "Create-A-World" tool since The Sims 3 was announced, so imagine how happily surprised I was when I found out it would be released next month. Now imagine how disappointed I am after I read that it'd be PC-only. I get it, EA develops TS3 through Windows, but they manage to run the game (albeit through Cider) on the Mac, so there is no excuse for EA not to release the "Create-A-World" tool for Mac users. I don't mind if CAW is released for the PC first and then released for the Mac, what I do mind is that as it stands, at least from what EA is implying, is that we won't have access to the Create-A-World tool at all, ever, period, end of sentence. EA said that they intend to improve the tool based on user-feedback. Well EA, I'd like to offer some constructive user-feedback right now: Please release a Mac version, even if it's wrapped in Cider as TS3 itself is, of the "Create-A-World -- BETA" tool. I realize that this is a "beta" tool, and I realize it will likely be buggy at first. I realize that the game is developed under Windows. However, those of us who play TS3 on the Mac are no different than your Windows customers, and we would like the ability to create our own worlds for use within the game as well. EA, please release the CAW tool for the Mac as well; thank you.

To my fellow Simmers: Please sign and continue to support this petition in a sign of support not just for The Sims 3, but for Mac gaming in general. We Mac users are often neglected when it comes to customization tools for various games. In the case of TS3, we've had to put up with buggy/non-functional games, patches that make things worse for some users, missing Simpoints, and a slew of other issues such as jet-black desks. Now EA won't even provide us with the "Create-A-World" tool, which is something I was admittedly looking forward to even more than the World Adventures EP. Please, sign this petition and show your support for Mac gaming, and for TS3 on the Mac in general. EA always says that they welcome constructive criticism; this is constructive criticism, Mac users such as myself just want the same tools that PC users have access to, including the ability to create our own worlds.

UPDATE: We now have over 100 signatures everyone! Thank you for your continued support; as usual, the most recent signatures can be found in my most recent post, but the first 100 will now reside in the first post in this thread.

UPDATE #2: We now have over 200 signatures; keep them coming everyone, and thank you again for your continued support. As always, the most recent signatures can be found in my most recent post.

UPDATE #3: We now have over 300 signatures; once again, please keep them coming everyone, and as always, thank you for your continued support. The most recent signatures can be found in my most recent post as usual.

UPDATE #4: Please see Karlieh's post on page 28 in the following link: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/405/133489.page Karlieh has attempted to create an *.app wrapper for CAW--BETA for the Mac but has not been successful yet. If you think that you can create the wrapper yourself, or that you can help her and/or offer her advice, I'd appreciate it. Remember, if you do get a wrapper to work, you need to remove the programs from it (CAW--BETA and TS3) in order to legally distribute it. I'd like to thank Karlieh for her continued efforts to create a wrapper that we can put CAW--BETA into to use with our Macs. On a side-note, we've now passed 350 signatures.

UPDATE #5: We now have over 400 signatures everyone, thank you for your continued support. Rest assured that although I might not post here often, I do read this thread all the time, and I'm not going to shut up about this until we get CAW! EA has included some basic CAW-esque functionality with WA in the "edit town" mode from what I understand, but those features do not include the ability to create one's own town from scratch. The day we have full CAW functionality I will gladly let this thread die. Apparently "Ambitions" has caused problems for PC users with CAW as well, so now seems like a great time to try to persuade EA that they should release a functional Mac version when they patch the PC version for compatibility with the Ambitions EP. Keep the signatures coming everyone, we still need them, thank you all for your ongoing support. :)

UPDATE #6: Okay, major thanks to Nienkenina for suggesting the addition of a letter-writing campaign, and to Michabean for finding the address to which the letters can be sent. Another way to try and persuade EA to release CAW for the Mac, and that may admittedly be more effective than a forum petition, is a letter-writing campaign. I am now asking everyone who has signed this petition, and who is able to, to join the letter-writing campaign for Create-A-World--BETA on the Mac. Letters should be sent to the following address:

Electronic Arts. Inc.
209 Redwood Shores Parkway
Redwood City CA, 94065
U.S.A.

Tips for letter writing:
All letters should be typed, double (or 1.5) spaced, and written using a legible font. 12pt Times New Roman (Times under Mac OS X,) is considered a standard size for type-written letters. If you don't want to use 12pt Times New Roman, 10pt Arial is a suitable alternative, and will take up the same general amount of space on a page. It should go without saying, but those of us in the US won't have to add the country to the last line of the above address.

Formatting basics: Be sure to add a return address to the top of the letter. Keep your letter to a single typed page; after your ending salutation (e.g. sincerely,) add three blank spaces, then type your name. Print your letter and sign it in ink where you left the three blank spaces.

Letter writing basics: BE POLITE! I cannot stress this enough; we are asking EA to release CAW--BETA for us, so the least that we can do in return is be polite. Be professional. Spell the word "you" instead of hitting the letter "U;" use proper grammar, and use spell check. Use black text and print your letter on white paper. Keep your letter to the point: Your letter shouldn't be more than a page, but it also shouldn't be one sentence long. Explain that you're a Mac user who doesn't have a copy of Windows, and that you'd like EA to release CAW for the Mac. Avoid straying off topic and mentioning other aspects of TS3, such as the upcoming Create-A-Pattern tool and the Ambitions EP. (You can of course use them as examples to explain why CAW should be WIN/MAC rather than WIN PC-Only.) Don't nag EA; if you're going to send multiple letters, wait at least seven (7) days before you send a second letter. Regardless of how many letters you send, you should thank EA for their time. Try to keep your letter personal; businesses are more likely to look at letters that have a personal touch to them, and consider the suggestions in them than they are to look at something that looks like a form letter. Remember, your letter is far more helpful than your petition signature, because companies generally give letters from consumers more "weight" than they give to petition signatures, especially online petition signatures. Furthermore, BE POLITE! This is so important that I'll say it again; you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Also, I shouldn't have to say this, but avoid threats, insults, and the like; it won't help our cause, and could be illegal; keep things civil and the letter-writing campaign could really help us.

Finally, all letters should be sent via "snail mail" using the good ol' fashioned United States Postal Service, or your countries equivalent. If you don't have stamps, you can purchase them directly from the post office when you mail your letter, or you can offer to buy one off of a friend. If you don't have a printer, take your letter to your local library or copy center and ask them to print it for you; they'll charge a small fee, but you'll be able to print your letter without having to purchase a printer. You could also ask a friend with a printer if you could print your letter on their computer if you don't have a printer of your own. With that said, let's get the letter writing aspect of this campaign started. :)

UPDATE #7: This thread was relocated to the Create-A-World forum from the Mac Discussions forum on June 6, 2010. If nothing else, it means that someone, somewhere in EA, has apparently seen the thread, even if they haven't responded to it. I can only hope that this is a sign of good things to come.

UPDATE #8: This was originally going to be about how we'd surpassed our initial goal of 500 signatures, but as I went through the first 500 signatures to make sure they were all unique, I came upon a small problem: A few people had created posts to "sign" the petition multiple times; these were different posts that started with the word "signed." Please, if you're unsure if you've signed, search the signatures; use your browser's "find" feature on this page, or the page with the current 100 signatures to do so. Your assistance and cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. I thought that we had 503 signatures, but after purging the duplicates, we only have 497; Geminiagre was originally 500 before the duplicates were caught; she's now #494, with the three people who signed after her bringing us up to 497. We're three signatures away from 500 folks; it should be easy for three more people to sign this. Also, if you see anymore duplicate signatures, please tell me! I try to catch and remove them all, (the original signature remains intact,) and accidents do happen, but the sooner they're corrected the better. We had six duplicate signatures in various parts of the petition, so if your signature number has "shifted" from the removal of a duplicate signature, don't worry, you're name is still there, it's just been given a different number. Again, thank you all for your time.

UPDATE #9:
We've now reached our first goal of 500 signatures, and are on our way to our second goal of 1,000 signatures; keep them coming everyone. I want to thank the first 499 people who joined me in signing this, as well as those who have pushed us toward our next goal. I also want to thank both the Mac users who are understandably signing this, and the Windows users who are signing purely on principal; again, your support for CAW on the Mac has not gone unnoticed. The 500th person to sign the petition was Keleya, and NLChapman will put us over the 500 mark. Keep the signatures coming everyone; we still need them, and thank you for your continued support.

UPDATE #10: As of August 9, 2011 we are at 708 signatures and growing. Signatures 1–700 are on the main page, while signatures 701 and onward are in my most recent post as always.

That's just really wonderfull *sarcasm* I want to be able to create world too. Are we less because we play on Mac? Don't we buy those games with money? So our money has less value than that of the Windows players?

I was equally excited about the CAW tool, and the moment I saw the words "For PC Only," I was distraught! (Really need life outside computer…can't leave right now) Anyway, I believe the loyalty we Mac-users gave while waiting after the PC-users to get the games of the former two editions should be compensated!

I have Photoshop and Bryce, and I've used them before to create terrain maps for other applications... Once upon a time, I was a content creator for Second Life, and one of my specialties was region-terraforming. I created landscapes that landowner after landowner told me were the best they'd ever seen in that game.

I want Create-A-World, and I suspect no one will see me for weeks when I get my hands on it.

I understand that Beta products are for testing, but it needs to be tested on macs, yea? I'm patient, generally a good problem-solver, and I'd love to be one of the people to put CAW through its paces.

I really am annoyed at EA at the moment. I have always loved making a few custom things here and there, but now I can't, just because of EA. Thanks a lot. I know that this petition probably won't change anything, but it is worth a try. I hope you can get as many signatures as possible so we can make a stand. I am just hoping that we can still download he created towns from the exchange so we can still experience different towns. At least in Sims 2, you could make new neighborhoods with SimCity 4.

I completely agree. I was dying to know if they would ever let us create our own worlds.
But, when I read that tiny note at the bottom of the page in italic letters, "PC only", I was definitely disappointed.

Definitely signed. I can't believe it's PC only. What a friggen joke. I love the idea of creating new neighborhoods, but now they don't want to bestow that privilege upon me?? What a mistake they are making. They already look stupid enough to me, not even telling me that my game is playable because they didn't ask if I had a disc version or what, but now they take away that ability to make a new neighborhood? Jeeze. I thought it was stupid enough that it didn't include it to begin with, but here they go, revoking our chance at getting the tool any time in 2009 OR 2010. I get the feeling they'll make it for sure on PC, then they will finally go at making a Mac version after they finalize and complete the PC one. Because we come second. We came second at getting patches and getting any of our problems fixed, we come second when we seek technical support because none of their techs know a thing about Macs, and now we come second in obtaining one of the best features to be added to the game.

They can't take our money, cripple our games with bad updates, leave us out of the new expansion pack party for a week, and then on top of all of that produce PC only companion software!! If you start out releasing a product as Mac compatible you are making a commitment to keep that software, and all very closely related or implied software, compatible with Macs. I am getting REALLY tired of these abuses and I want them to stop! Unless these things change, I am NEVER recommending another EA product to a Mac user, and perhaps not even PC users.

I'm gonna go tip off some of my favorite Mac and Technology blogs now and see what they think about it. I really suggest everyone else do the same. Here are direct links to the pages where you can tip them off as well, the more people who send in this issue the more likely they are to make a blog post about it. :)

    TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Webblog)
Endgadget (Click the "Tip Us" button on the right.)

And if there are any other Mac blogs you know about feel free to tell them too! Even if this doesn't get us our working expansion packs or our Create a World, at least we'll know EA didn't get away with this quietly.

Wow, I'm really pleased with the feedback this has gotten so far, and I'm hoping that more people continue to sign this; if we adopt the concept that one signature is equal to 1,000 people, (this is how TV ratings are determined, as well as how the FCC reacts to letters regarding US broadcast TV,) then the 18 signatures as of this writing would be equivalent to 18,000 actual Mac users. I really hope EA is reading this the same way that they were reading this forum when I called them for technical support and expected them to actually know more than we did back in June.

VexingQuery, I'm not one to usually start petitions such as this, but the lack of communication regarding Snow Leopard lead me to putting my name on the one about the lack of support Mac users were/are receiving. CAW being PC-only really got to me though, because I wanted it more than World Adventures. In fact, if EA were to hand me $40 and put a copy of World Adventures and CAW in front of me, and then tell me I could only choose one item, I'd choose CAW every time. I admittedly picked WA specifically for the "basement tool," and of course, attempting to use it is the one thing that's causing my game to crash to the desktop consistently. Don't even get me started about how I spent two hours trying to prevent one of my Sims from acting like a statue after a "rude awakening" from a crying Sim.

As far as creating in-game worlds goes, the only reason I keep my antiquated Pentium 4 set up is so that I can create worlds for Civilization III: Complete; the Mac version lacks a the "Map Editor" that the PC version includes standard. (The PC Map editor is included with the Mac game though for those who dual-boot.) I can't figure out why developers seem to get a "brain cramp" when it comes to porting world creation tools though. As noted above Civilization III had them when MacSoft had the rights to the game, but once Aspyr got said rights, they apparently deemed the map editor "unimportant," much to the chagrin of Mac Civ Fanatics. 2K Games and Aspyr got slightly smarter with Civ IV and integrated world design into the game itself, (which is admittedly what EA should've done with TS3 and CAW,) but Aspyr chose to use a different version of the python scripting language for Civ IV's Mac Port, which made it so that custom DLLs don't work with the Mac version of the game, although custom worlds with standard DLLs work just fine. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing, which is what EA seems to be offering Mac Simmers at present. Yes, beta builds are for testing software, but as you said VexingQuery, how are we supposed to test the game for the Mac without a beta build?

MusicGirl, CAW was initially going to be released with the base game if the December 2008 "Games for Windows" article is to be believed. After the delay, no mention of a "world builder tool" was made, people got curious and for awhile it sounded like EA wasn't going to release said tool. Then, in the ideas & feedback forum, a petition started for a "world builder tool," which was recently announced as "Create-A-World -- beta," albeit for the (windows) PC only at present. Once the tool was announced, the petition ended, and the original author told people to let the thread die. This was before we knew the tool would be PC-only mind you. Most people thanked EA for the tool and that was that. Whether it was the other petition, a lousy review, or something else that caused EA to announce the CAW--beta tool is unknown to me, but I'm willing to take any steps I can to get EA to put this tool into the hands of Mac users, and that includes this petition. I can't see why EA would make the towns unable to function on the Mac. CAW--beta is supposedly the same tool EA used for Riverview and the towns in World Adventures. I get it, EA runs PCs, but they ought to be able to port their developers tools to the Mac, even if they run them through Cider the way they run the game through Cider. Again, I'd be willing to wait if I knew that we'd be getting the tool at some point, but what worries me is that there isn't even a mention of a "Mac version." All EA has to do is say "Mac version coming -insert when it's coming here-" and I'd be happy.

I'm aware of the way EA allowed The Sims 2 to work off of worlds created in SimCity 4, and I know that other games had similar functionality. ("Starship Creator: Warp II" and "Star Trek DS9: Dominion Wars" come to mind.) However, the fact that world creation became popular in TS2, should have been a cue for EA to include it in the TS3 base game, which they supposedly considered. Now they're releasing such a tool, but only for PC users. Again, as I've stated, I'm willing to work with a beta build, but I need a Mac version of this tool. My Mac Pro isn't capable of running boot camp because of the Mac Pro RAID card that's installed in it, and I shouldn't have to drop $200 dollars on Windows just to run one program that should have a Mac port, even if it's running through Cider. I'd really like to know why EA didn't just include "Create-A-World" functionality in the base game as planned. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to have it at all, even in beta form as Windows users are getting, but it seems stupid that they left out something that was in such high demand, before the game was even released.

DataWizard, you pretty much summed up my sentiments quite nicely. When I pay $60.00 for a "collector's edition" base game and it ships with known bugs, and promotional content that I have to jump through hoops to receive, I'm going to be annoyed. When you gouge me $40.00 for a follow-up Expansion Pack that's so defective that it plays like an early alpha build, can't receive required patches for a week after it's released, and plays like a beta build after it's patched, I'm going to be very agitated. (I feel even worse for the digital download consumers whose base games stopped working at all after they installed World Adventures and couldn't remove it.) And when the one tool that I've been waiting for is finally being release, and being released in what's acknowledged as a "beta build," and you decide to exclude me and my platform from using the tool, I'm going to be outright angry. It'd be one thing if EA said they'd release the tool a little while after the PC release, but at present, it doesn't look like EA is going to release it for Mac users at all. DataWizard, if you're not recommending EA to Mac users based on product flaws, then you shouldn't recommend them to PC users either. PC users have an issue where TS3 lacks "vsync" which EA has kept quiet about. If you run TS3 under windows and don't use the FPS limiter cheat you could literally burn up your graphics card as a result of this flaw. PC users may be getting treated slightly better than we are, but not much better, and in reality, they may just have a different set of problems that are equally obnoxious, which EA knows about and hasn't done anything to correct. For every defective Mac copy of TS3, there's an equally defective PC copy of TS3. EA should want more people beta testing CAW, now fewer people--they seem to be short on beta testers for their "finished" software. Again, I have no problems with beta builds that are advertised as such.

I also like your idea (DataWizard) of going to TUAW and Engadget; however, I'd also throw in MacRumors, and CultofMac, both of which are well-known and respected as well. Likewise, as much as I hate to admit it, it wouldn't hurt if a few people decided to slap this up on Facebook and Twitter. Although I personally don't use either of those services, I know many people who do, and the more publicity this gets, the better the chances are of EA actually reacting to the problem rather than ignoring it. As you've said, even if this doesn't fix the problem, at least EA won't get away with ignoring us quietly. Don't get me wrong, I don't despise EA, I despise how they're leaving us out of the CAW tool and releasing buggy EPs and base games; there's a difference.

ImaginePeace, I'm with you on Strangetown. Given that EA hasn't included any of the TS2 towns in TS3, I figured one of the first things people would do is give us their take on a TS3 Pleasantview, Veronaville, and Strangetown. Given that Strangetown is the only one of the three that doesn't at least have a TS3 parallel, it's the one I was most looking forward too. In fact, I actually had an idea for a "Strangetown counterpart," which would be to "Strangetown" what "Sunset Valley" is to "Pleasentview." It was likely going to be the second town that I intended to create, but now neither may see the light of day thanks to EA neglecting Mac users and making the CAW beta PC-only. Again, all EA has to do to make me happy is tell us that it's coming to the Mac at some point, even if it's June 2010 or something, but as it stands, they haven't done that.

Finally, let me reiterate this: I don't mind that the tool is in beta stages, I just want to be able to use it on my computer. I cannot afford to purchase a PC (or another Mac + Windows) just to run CAW -- beta, and even if I could, that's besides the point. The game is listed as PC/Mac compatible, and any and all expansions and tools should also be PC/Mac compatible. If the tool has to run through Cider, just as the game, EPs, and SPs do, that's fine, I just want to be able to use the tool on my Mac. EA has committed to both the Windows PC and Mac platforms, and they need to support both platforms.

I encourage everyone here to continue to sign this petition, and to contact Mac blogs as DataWizard suggested, as well as to put this information up on Twitter and Facebook where it may receive even more publicity. The more publicity this issue gets, and the more people that sign this petition, the more likely EA is to actually listen to us and to port the tool to the Mac. I thank all of you who have already signed this, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants the CAW beta tool to be brought to the Mac. Again, thank you all for your support. :)
