@ciane I think it's the photo-heaviness of the thread. Browser loads all the pics, even under the spoilers, so the more pic posts on the page, the longer it takes to load the ones at the end. I don't think they were not loading, they just hadn't *yet*

The exterior design of Inside Out looks very nice! :) The roofing looks great! The greenery covered trellis entry nook is a nice touch. It is very nice that you have used the green house windows in the home. Very nice outdoors areas! The wooden flooring back patio is very nice. Sims will enjoy sitting on the chairs in the sunshine chatting and enjoy sitting on the stools having a drink from the bar. They will enjoy using the martial arts training item. It is very nice that there is a sunken level rock flooring patio, Nice firepit nook for sims to enjoy sitting around the fire keeping warm and toasting food. The pergola outdoors living area is very nice! Very nice layout and furnishing of the interior of the home! The natural themed design of the home is so very nice! It is very calming and restful . Very nice brown and green colour scheme of the home. It looks very nice the way that you have used the brick texture for the interior and exterior areas. The design of the kitchen and dining area is very nice! The greenery covered shelving near the dining table is a very special touch!
It is a very nice natural home! :)

Great looking house. The master bath is really nice. I especially like the back yard. Fantastic living pool. Where does the cook top come from?

Inside Out is such a great home CM. I really like the exterior and architectural touches. Lots of visual interest and such detail throughout. The patterned accent wall in the living room is pretty cool. What did you use at the top of the wall?
  • creativemetaphorcreativemetaphor Posts: 1,543 Member
    @soocoolsim Thank you! :blush:

Do you mean the wall with the fireplace? That's from the buydebug menu, but I don't remember if it's in the tomb tab or the misc. tab. It's the entrance to the dragon cave (I think that's what it's called?) I just plunked it down far enough that it wouldn't stick up through the second floor as it's taller than a single floor in height. Took some playing with the ground level inside the foundation to get it right.

    Lina Svensdottir - Sim entry
for @aricarai 's The Holiday Cabin contest

    Lina's Saga

The beautiful town of Aurora Skies straddles two worlds, the old with its rustic charm and delightful story-telling, and the new with its forward thinking, eco-friendly culture. But some things transcend time, like family and a love of nature, and a sense of self-sufficiency.

This is the world in which Lina Svensdottir grew. While her family lived in the town itself - her mother, Eva was an art teacher, and her father Sven worked in the science lab on sustainable technology - she and her twin brother Leif looked forward every school break to being able to stay at their grandparent's old turf house in the country. So many wonderful memories of those days!

There was Amma Ethel's flowery, floury apron, which wiped away tears caused by scraped knees or bug stings; and Afi Erik's weathered old hands holding her on his lap as he sung songs in the old tongue and filled her head with the wonder of old stories.

Amma's homemade mac'n'cheese, rich and creamy and filled with warmth against cold wintery days; it's still her favorite dish, and she does love to cook even if she sometimes makes more of a mess than a meal - you don't have to be good at something to love it! Nothing was better than helping Amma bring in the harvest from the garden and almost like magic produce a table of delights to fill even the bottomless stomachs of growing girls and boys.

From her Afi she learned her own brand of self-sufficiency, how to build and work with wood. He used to say if he couldn't make it for you, you didn't really need it! She never quite had the courage to point out he wasn't the one laying the eggs! But it still made an impact on her, and even if she does like the convenience of a store, she does her best to reduce and recycle whenever she can. Her favorite color isn't green for no reason! And while she may not have a natural knack for handiness, it doesn't mean she has no skill at it.

She and Leif share a love of all of nature's wonders. They would spend all their days trekking over meadows and up mountains with backpacks to find some rare flower, or collect strange rocks and seeds. Plants, animals, even the skies above were all filled with wonder and beauty, and calling to be discovered. She has a raven named Muninn, a gift from her brother, and has been teaching him to sing. How cool is a raven who can sing along to her favorite indie bands!

When inside, she could often be found curled up next to the old fireplace reading books, or sometimes reading out loud to the family as Amma knitted in her rocking chair and Afi smoked his old pipe, whittling some piece of wood or antler and seemed to forget what century he was in for a time. Lina still wears some of the sweaters her Amma knitted for her, the ones that are big enough now that she's grown. Sweaters and leggings are her favorite clothes, keeping her warm in the cold climate.

All that was years ago now. Now, Lina is a grown woman herself and having to think about her life ahead. She doesn't like being around too many people that aren't her family, but knows she's going to have to support herself somehow. Those years of reading and stories have left in her a great desire to write her own, and so while working odd jobs here and there, she secretly worked on writing books, hoping someday soon she'll be able to make enough to do that full time. Now, with a few books to her name, her dream of becoming an author may be coming sooner than she thought!

Bjorn To Be Wild - Build entry
for @aricarai 's The Holiday Cabin contest

    To Build A Cabin

Lina decided she needed a place to escape the stress of townlife and work and too many people, but just any old place won't do. She is determined to do her Afi proud and build herself a cabin. It may have taken a long time, but the best things are worth the wait! Her very own cabin up in the mountains, so far away from the world that the only way to get there is with a good long hike, is just the place to cultivate her creativity and let her relax.

Sometimes with help from her brother, she spent many long days and nights up in the hills, building up the foundation and notching the logs to stack one on top of the other. She would spend weeks at a time, camped out around a bonfire, and slowly the cabin took shape. The largest appliances had to be carted up the mountain by horse-cart, but the bulk of the work was still good old fashioned sweat and woman-power!

This cabin is no place for casual visitors, only hardy souls make it up and are rewarded with this cozy retreat. Lina isn't interested in making it look tidy, either; she enjoys the clutter of a lived-in house. The entry/mud room gives her a place to kick off muddy boots and hang coats.
It holds her recycling bins for glass, paper, and metals - to keep critters from getting in and making a mess -as well as space for her bike and an old washing machine. Outside is the clothes line, to let the sun and wind work and save the energy. What little power the cabin does use is supplied by the solar panels out front.

The kitchen is tiny, but reminds her of her Amma's - an old stove for cooking, stand-alone sink, and cold pantry for storage. She did bring along her coffee machine, sometimes a cold winter day just needs a hot cup of cocoa around the table for three.

The fireplace in the living room has a nice stack of wood to keep it going, and a soft cushion-chair to read in. There is a couch for family and friends to sit and chat, or to cozy up in front of the roaring fire. There's also a bird tree for Muninn, where he is free to fly around the cabin. Sliding doors open onto a large back porch, wrapped around from the front door, where a bench offers a great place to enjoy nature, or a space for dancing when the mood strikes.

The bedroom for guests has an old double-twin bed just like she and her brother would sleep in as kids, as well as a sleeping bag for any extra visitors. The bathroom is on the main floor and has the basic needs covered, including a rustic shower with stone enclosure, but at least the water is warm!

For those long summer nights there's a bonfire with some straw-bales for seating to hang out around. There's plenty of space for snowball fights or building snowmen and making angels in winter, or having epic water-balloon fights in summer. The best activities with friends are still free, and so much fun!

Some day she will have a garden out front, but for now this is just a little retreat, she isn't here enough to tend one, but she does have one pot for growing the occasional vegetable inside.

Upstairs, overlooking the living room, is the loft with bookshelves, rocking chair, and a chess table - a universal past-time in the town. There is even room for storage under the eaves. This is also where she has her writing desk and her one truly modern convenience - a laptop! Here is where she does her best writing, and she's counting the days when she can maybe even make this place her full-time home!

Off the loft is her bedroom with a double bed and another cozy chair for reading, but her favorite part is the skylight so she can watch the stars above, or the rain beat down as she drifts off to sleep.

She has plans for the future, for a spouse and kids. Someday she may put another full bath upstairs or another bedroom, but that's all still far away. For now, this is her beautiful, peaceful retreat from her regular routine, where only the closest of friends and family gather and enjoy the holidays, whatever the season.

Lina and her home are so very, very special! <3 You have written the background details of Lina and her grandparents, and of her new home so very beautfully, creatively and lovely! As I read it, I could imagine the scenes of her childhood visits to her grandparent’s home and it was so very nice to read it. It was so very nice reading about each of the areas of the home, and how and why you designed the rooms and areas. You have put so much time, work and creativity into the sim and the build! They are very touching and homely entries to the contest <3

Wonderful cabin and sim. Love all the special touches big and small. Such a warm and comfy home and you thought of everything even the beams. Well done

@ciane one of Lief's students dropped by for a visit. She ended up passing out in the corner of the lot, could not leave for some reason.

    @rosemow <3 thank you dear!

@soocoolsim it's the architect in me ;). Admittedly I basically built my own dream mountain cabin

@Hidehi thank you! I loved doing that 'in work' bit

As a follow-up to my entries in @aricarai 's The Holiday Cabin contest, I decided to build her grandparents' Aurora Skies turf house!

Inspired by traditional Icelandic architecture, this cozy house features an open plan kitchen/dining/living in one half; two bedrooms, a bath, and a bonus loft in the other half, with a garden out front and room for more outdoor activities. Rustic charm can be yours with this starter for a family of 4. The perfect place to celebrate Simsmas, you're almost at the North Pole!

The layout and exterior design of Traditional Turf House looks very nice! :) The two halfs of the home look great! The texture of the exterior looks great and the red coloured open shutter windows are a nice touch. It is nice that there is a gardening area for sims to enjoy growing harvestable plants. Very nice layout of the interior of the home! It is great that there is an open plan living, dining and kitchen area in one half of the build, and the bedrooms and bathroom are in the other half.
It is very nice family starter for Aurora Skies! :)

    We Three Kings

For BuildnShare 197 Familia, a home for three orphaned siblings who lost everything in an earthquake that destroyed their entire village.

This adobe style build will make them feel right back at home. Brightly decorated in traditional colors and patterns, It features a sunken living room, bar-style eating in the kitchen, a sunken outdoor dining area, downstairs master bedroom with bath, upstairs kids' rooms with shared bath and hall overlooking the living below.

Skill items throughout the home to help the kids as they grow, giving them a helping hand to offset all they have lost.

The three children have been through enough, now they can be kings and queens in their very own adobe palace, reunited just in time for the holiday.

Mateo is a 17 yr old with a nurturing nature and very family-oriented. He's also handy and athletic, and hopes to get a part-time job after school to support his younger siblings, willing to do whatever it takes!
His favorites include country music, hotdogs, and turquoise.

Sophia is 10. She's brave, a genius, and a perfectionist. She hopes someday to become a doctor or maybe a teacher and help poor kids. She loves Latin music, fruit parfait, and lime green. She helps her little brother do his homework, but still doesn't quite trust that there isn't a monster under her bed.

Adrian is the youngest at 8. He's artistic, eco-friendly, and is very neat. He's always loved food and cooking, it reminds him of all that is good with a home, and wants to be a chef and grow a perfect garden when he's older. His favorite food is tri-tip steak. At least... he wants it to be. He's never actually had it, but he's sure it must be the perfect food. He loves Latin music, like his sister and his favorite color is spiceberry.

Then of course, there's Santa, who reunited Mateo to his siblings. There is no doubting his character - family-oriented, good, eccentric, charismatic, and friendly. His favorites are kids' music, cookies, and red!

The exterior design and the layout of We Three Kings home is very nice! :) The adobe style looks great. Very nice front courtyard area. The circular water fountain is a nice touch, and the Sims will enjoy sitting on the seat bench in the entry area, in the outdoors air. Very nice trellls covered sunken ourdoors dining and living patio! Sims will enjoy cooking on the grill and sitting at the table enjoying eating the meal and having a drink of lemonade. Nice gardening nook for sims to enjoy growing harvestable plants. The kids will have fun playing in the sandpit or hopscotch. Very nice furnishing of the interior of the home! The colourful patterned furniture gives a very nice look to the rooms and suits well the theme of the build. The wall patterning in the downstairs bathroom looks great! The bedhead area in Matteo’s bedroom gives a nice look in the room.Very nice design of Sofia’s bedroom. The leafy wall pattern is a nice touch there. The fish on the side wall in Adrian’s bedroom are cute for him to see when laying in bed!
It is a very nice home for the kids! :)

    Another cabin to share!
This one is intended to sit on the Sunset Valley lot next to Stoney Falls. Stoney Cabin is decorated up for Simsmas. Enter from the front porch, it has a downstairs guest bedroom which holds up to three, and the bath. The eat-in kitchen has three seats at the counter and a washing machine, plus door to the back porch. The cozy living area with fireplace has ample seating and stairs to the loft where bookshelves, stereo, and guitar offer a variety of activities. The master bedroom is off the loft with a double bed (for one), desk and laptop, and closet dormer. Outdoor activities include bonfire, telescope, and archery range. And don't forget the basement where you can relax in the sauna!

@soocoolsim Ooh thank you! I am a little sad this cabin didn't make the final cut for @aricarai 's contest, but just couldn't get the cost down. Well I could have but it would have been sacrificing a lot of the personality. The debate on whether to put in Lina or Leif was a tough one, though!

Stoney Cabin looks a very warming cabin to live in during the Wintery weather! :) The pictures of it in Wintertime covered in snow and with the white holiday lights on look so very pretty! Very nice exterior design of the home! The roofing looks nice. Very nice layout and furnishing of the interior. It is nice that there is a basement level for sims to enjoy resting in the sauna. The fireplace sofa and arnchair sitting area in the living room is nice for sims to relax there in front of the fire having a chat. The Christmas tree, presents, hanging stockings and garlands in the loft area looks festively pretty! Very nice lounger area for sims to enjoy resting there reading a book and listening to the gramophone music. Very nice design of the double bedroom! The windows study desk nook is great! Sims will like seeing the misty Wintertime windows when sitting at the desk table. The books, candles and jug are homely touches on the ledge beside the master bed. It looks nice how the beds have been placed in the guest bedroom.
    Lief is very handsome! :)
