    Build-n-Share Challenge #150 • Returning Home

Build Deadline: Wednesday 10th September, Midnight Central

    Returning Home

The workload have become a bit less. Which you don’t mind, since there will be a lot more to come in the next periods. You have an appointment coming in an half an hour and you go through your portfolio to see if you have any examples you find suitable.

Rose comes in to announce your appointment have arrived.
    “Send him in, I’m ready”

“Hello sir, why don’t you sit down?” As Rose comes in to escort the new client.
“Good morning, my name is Blake Hall. I’m glad you had time to meet me”
Blake sits down at the other side of your desk.

You must have blinked too long because you totally missed that Rose placed a new cup of coffee in front of you and left.
The man in front of you is still young. Ash blond hair, well build but there is something about him that makes him a bit geeky.

“So tell me, what can I help you with?” You ask.
Blake gives you a thoughtful look. “Well, I just finished my college degree in Technology and am now moving back. But I feel I don’t want to move back in with my parents after living on campus.”
“Oh I can understand that, don’t worry” You answer. “So what are your preferences?”

“I love cars. And I don’t mean expensive speed monsters per se, I actually love working on them. So a 2 car garage is a must for me. Attached to the house would be preferable. So I can get to it easily. I don’t actually have a car yet, but that will not take long.” Blake chuckles.
“Also since I’m alone for now, 1 bedroom would be enough with a bathroom. Though I don’t mind it being en suite, as long as it is accessible from a main part from the house as well. I don’t want guests to go through my bedroom to go to the toilet. My budget it $45.000”

You laugh a bit. “It seems you have this well thought through. But I think I can work with this. How about favourite colours? Or maybe items you want?”

“Hmm” Blake things this over a bit. ”I don’t really have a favourite colour to be honest. I do like orange, but I don’t like it if it’s overwhelming. But some colour throughout the house wouldn’t be bad.”
    “And items?” You ask again.
“oh a bookcase where I can learn new skills would be good. And a workplace. I almost forgot that. A separate study would be nice, but absolutely not necessary, it can be a desk in the living. As long as it has a computer of some sort. I’m starting a career in the Video Game developing”

“Ok, well I think I got it then. In two weeks the house will be done” You shake Blakes hand once more as you say your goodbyes.

“Thank you so much and I am anxious to see it!”

    Requirements:

    • 20x20 lot
    • 1 Bedroom
    • 1 Bathroom (accessible from main part of the house)
    • 2 car garage attached to the house
    • Your choice of colors
    • Budget is $45,000
    • Study area with computer and bookcase (can be open floorplan)

    Optional Challenge:
Make Blake Hall and show him in his new house
His traits are: Computer Whiz, handy, friendly, other 2 are for you to choose

Deadline: Wednesday September 10th, Midnight CMT

Challenge #151 • Curtis. Douglas Curtis… The Third

Build Deadline: Wednesday, 24th September, Midnight CMT

It was the sound of unending barking that drew you back to the surface, away from the depths of the design you were working on for an architectural magazine. As the creative fog lifts from your brain, you realize you recognize the sound of that bark. Its Rose’s little dog. Weird. Usually the dog is very quiet and never barks at people. With a sigh you get up to go see why the barking hasn't been stopped yet.

Stepping to the doorway, you see a tableau that makes you pause.

Rose is sitting at her desk, looking like she’s struggling to maintain her “meet the client” friendly composure. Leaning against her desk, flashing a charming smile, is a man you vaguely recognize from a magazine cover. Rose’s little dog has deserted her usual post to back into a corner where she can see everything and bark at this new human male. “Rose?” You inquire uncertainly, concerned.

The look on Rose’s face as she looks over at you is one of blissful relief. You however, only hear the honking of a horn and the screech of tires that comes with being thrown under the bus. “Wonderful timing! Mr. Curtis here was just telling me what kind of house he wants!”

‘Curtis…Curtis…Oh no…’ You think, realizing who he is.

Douglas Curtis the Third, famous adventurer, explorer and vaguely associated with Archaeology. His tall, khaki wearing and very broad shouldered presence graced more than a few of the magazines you’ve seen. Many a young lady has sighed over his chiselled good looks, thick sun bleached blonde hair and deeply tanned skin. His charming and schmoozy personality has enjoyed a lot of TV coverage and there seemed to be no end to the self propagandising articles about his exploits.

Forcing a smile on your face, and responding to the demands of friendship, you hold out your hand. “Mr Curtis. Its nice to meet you. Why don't we go back into my office and talk about what you’re looking for?”

With a wink and a charming smile, he tilts his head in Rose’s direction. “Think I already have.” Fortunately his eyes are on you so he misses the roll of eyes that Rose gives. “Anyway, what I've got in mind is actually a number of challenges for the right architect. Starting off with a new home. I'm moving to Willow Creek and I want a home worthy of being my home base. I've been all over the world so I don't have any real style preferences, just something that will showcase my artefacts, finds and trophies. Money isn't really a problem. But something…penthouse like. Perhaps 2 bedrooms, including the master suite. I throw a lot of parties so the place has to be impressive…Great kitchen, formal dining, office, living room…if there's a balcony it needs to be set up for entertaining…”

“Sounds rather detailed Mr. Curtis. Does it need to be an apartment?” You ask, jotting notes down on the pad of paper Rose handed you.

“I hadn't really decided but you know what? The more I think about it the more I like the idea. Yes. I’d like it to be a penthouse.”

    “Okay. What about budget?”

“Would 150K be too modest?” He tosses a wink at Rose.

“I think we can put something together in a couple weeks for you.” You say, trying to draw his attention back to you.

He straightens up and shakes your hand, “Great. I'm headed to Al Simhara tomorrow anyway. Cant wait to see it when its done.” He hands a card to Rose, “But if you want to get that drink I’ll put off my trip for you…” Gives another blindingly white smile, before he lets you show him out.

Returning to Rose’s desk, you pick up the card and study it. Then turn and offer it to the approaching dog. The little animal sniffs it, lets out a short growl, then snatches it and runs out the door. You both go to the window and watch as the little dog digs a hole and buries it, leaving you both helpless with laughter.

    Requirements:
    •Penthouse
    •Hot tub/sauna
    •2 bedrooms
    •Full Master Suite
    •Balcony
    •Formal Kitchen and Dining
    •Ready to entertain
    •150k budget

    Challenge #152 • The Olsens

Build Deadline: Wednesday October 8th, Midnight CMT

It was with much stifled, exasperated laughter that you accepted the profuse thanks from Douglas Curtis. The ever faithful (and merciless) Rose spent most of that interview pretending to be completely oblivious towards the hints and suggestions for dinners or drinks. Finally, after managing to cut the schmoozing and posturing short, you shut the door behind him and lean back against it. You lock eyes with Rose and both of you let out a deep, relieved sigh.

    “Close up early?” You ask.

“Drinks?” Rose responds with. You smile and turn to lock the door.

Barely have your fingers touched the deadbolt lock then you see a man and a woman coming up the walk. “Drinks are on pause Rose. Clients.” You grin, hearing Rose’s muffled profanity, then open the door graciously for the couple.

They look startled, then smile back. The woman strikes you as a very warm and friendly person, with sunny blonde hair and bright blue eyes. “Oh! How nice!” She says in a playful voice. Her husband smiles, “Great welcome.” Already balding and possessed of a close-cropped beard, his eyes are just a blue and project a calm steadiness that make you feel like you’re reunited with an old friend.

“Thank you. Please come in.” You shut the door, then introduce yourself.

“I'm Don and this is my wife Judy. We’re here for a house.” He says.

“Great! Let's go back to my office.” You say, leading them back.

After many compliments on the interior decorating and the layout, Judy settles into her chair, folds her hands in her lap and then gets right to the heart of it. “Don and I are wanting a custom house. He’s the new fire chief and I'm a teacher. We've decided that since we’re going to spend the rest of our lives here, we want something exactly right.”

“Define ‘exactly right’.” You request, taking notes.

“Well, we both like colonial architecture, so that's what we would like for the exterior and the landscaping. But inside, we love modern interiors. My favorite color is blue and his is brown.”

“Minimum of 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and one-half bath…but if you can put more bedrooms in that would be great,” Don interjects. “With a soaking tub. My hobby is woodworking so if you could put together a nice workshop for me that would be nice. Also, a 2 car garage.”

“None of that sounds like an issue.” You say confidently.

Judy smiles, “Well, there is one more thing….”

    “Okay.”

“Our parents are going to be coming out in a month. His mother and father and my mother. All three are retired, and they don't always get along. So rather than build a wing or two for them, we've decided on separate houses. But we’ll get into that later. Let's just say we need a nice large lot and our new house to be positioned with that in mind.”

“Can do. What's my budget for this build?”

“Well, we were thinking about $75k,” suggests Don. “That enough?”

“Sure. Will 2 weeks be soon enough?”

“Sure.” He stands up, holds out his hand. “Cant wait to see what you make.”

“Me too!” Judy chimes in, also shaking your hand before being escorted out by Rose.

You jot down a few more notes before Rose comes back, chirping “Doors locked!”

“Then let's go!” You say, grabbing your jacket.

    Requirements:
    Large lot 50×50 or 64×64
    2 Beds
    2.5 Baths
    Colonial Architecture
    Modern Interior
    Colonial Landscaping
    Wood Shop
    2 car garage
    75k budget

    Challenge #153 • The Olsen's Part 2

Morning. Who said morning had to come so early? ‘Whoever it was, they deserve a good punch in the mouth’, you decide as you grumpily sit down at your desk. And a Monday morning was even worse. A few scant hours of sleep after spending far too much time at a charity fundraiser the night before somehow only served to make you feel more tired. Desperately gulping down the caffeine-laden pumpkin spiced latte you picked up on the way in, you hope it will cure your exhausted grouchiness before your first appointment.

An email from Judy@theolsens.com catches your eye as you wade through the Monday morning inbox.

“Hi! I'm so sorry, but Don and I are going to have to miss our appointment with you this Monday. We've had a family emergency. I wanted to tell you though, that we love our new home and look forward to spending the rest of our lives there.

However, we wanted to tell you about part 2 of our project. We are both very close to our parents, being only children. My Mom and both of his parents. We’d like you to build 2 more houses on the property, one for each of our parents. Our parents are…tolerant of each other, so individual houses are best. Each house should be Colonial in design and tie in with the main house that you built for us. Of course, appropriate landscaping is a must.

His parents, Leroy and Charlotte, prefer an Arts and Crafts style of decorating and interior. Their house should be 1 bedroom, 1.5 baths at least. His mother uses a walker, so nothing cluttered so she can get around. She needs a sewing room for her hobbies and he needs a den for when he watches hockey. My mother in law hates hockey. They still drive, so a small one car garage would be nice.

My mother, Vivian, prefers a Coastal/Eclectic style of décor. She loves to read and write, so good lighting and lots of bookshelves are a must. Her house should be 1 bedroom and 1.5 baths as well. She also likes to garden, so a small greenhouse out back for her to putter in would be a great addition. She does not drive, so no need for a garage there.

I hope you’re interested in taking on this challenge. We will be back in about 2 weeks since both parents will be arriving then. If you have any problems, let me know!

    Thanks, Judy.”

You lean back in your chair, thinking over the request. ‘Shouldn't be too hard

    Requirements:
2 small homes, with colonial architecture and landscaping
Each home must have 1 bedroom, 1.5 baths
    Total budget of $125k

    Leroy and Charlotte’s home:
    Arts and Crafts interior
    Sewing room
    Den
    Garage
    Walker friendly

    Vivian’s home:
    Coastal/Eclectic interior
    Greenhouse
    Good lighting
    Lots of bookshelves

    Optional Challenge
Make Leroy, Charlotte and Vivian and show one photo of each of them doing what they love!

    Leroy is active and grumpy,
    Charlotte is creative and nice,
Vivian loves the outdoors and is a bookworm.

The rest of the traits, as always, are up to you!

Note, if you did not take part in the first part of this challenge, then you can of course still enter part two. You should just build the two homes on a lot no larger than 30x20.

    Challenge #154 - A Ghostly Design

You sit staring out the window of your office, “Could that possibly just have happened?” you ask yourself. As you look down at your notebook, you find that the notes you took during your last meeting haven’t disappeared into thin air, so you suppose it must have.

“A small home, like this can’t be that difficult to build surely?” You think as you ponder your client, the most unusual client you have come across in your time as an architect and designer. “So, he’s a ghost?! That doesn't change the outline of the brief does it!?” Shaking your head you get up from your desk and stretch your legs, you hear Rose typing away in the reception area and pop your head around the door. “Any chance of a coffee?” You ask her, thinking surely some caffeine will help you get your head around the situation. As you turn back to your desk, you hear a small noise from the seating area.

There sat your client, again appearing as if from nowhere! You make a small girlish gasp, and immediately feel incredibly plum. “Mr Green!” You exclaim.

“Ah yes, hello again, I rather feel we finished our little meeting a little quickly, I forgot to let you know that budget won’t be an issue for this build. Go ahead and spend as much, or as little as you like.”

Rose comes through the door and looks startled to see your client, she drops the coffee and apologises profusely, rushes back to the reception area to get some cleaning supplies.

“I’ll let you get back to your brief, thank you again for agreeing to take this project on.”

“It’s not a problem Mr Green, the build should be ready for you in two weeks, is that an appropriate time scale?”

“Perfect, just in time for my party, to which, you are of course invited and bring that beguiling assistant of yours.”

Rose enters apologising profusely, much to your amusement to the client, who has already vanished once more. As she looks towards the seating area, her mouth opens in a perfect ‘O’.

“Hence my need for caffeine.” You say and you both dissolve into laughter.

    The Brief:
    ❖ A 20x30 lot
    ❖ 2 Bedrooms, both with en-suites
    ❖ A further full bathroom
❖ A Victorian style floor plan (so no open plan homes)
    ❖ Victorian style landscaping
❖ An old world feel to the interiors
❖ Kitchen, Dining Room and Drawing Room/Music Room must be included
❖ Keep in mind that your client is a ghost with all your design choices
❖ You have an unlimited budget

    Optional Challenge
Create Mr William Green, a ghost who died when a meteor landed on him, show him enjoying his party in his new home. His Aspiration while he was alive (back in the 1800’s) was to become a chess legend, and he was always very frugal.

The driver took the family's remains to the science lab, but 1820's capabilities being what they were, the lab was only successful in bringing Mr. Green's ghost back to the land of the living. Now, he is brooding and dislikes the outdoors. He spends most days playing solitary games of chess, wandering through his family's effects in the attic, and mourning their loss in the family crypt. The neighbors take pity on him and occasionally stop by for a game of chess or to bring him food, since modern appliances still confound him.

    Challenge #155 - Net Worth

You're hunched over your sketchpad at the drafting table when Rose bursts into your office, practically slamming the door shut behind her. Your usually calm and collected assistant is clearly rattled, given the lack of color in her cheeks and her sky-high eyebrows.

“Rose, what's wrong?” you ask, noting the faint tremor in her hands.

“I think...” Rose whispers, “I think your next clients may be some kind of criminals! My favorite china tea cup and the antique fountain pen from my mother have mysteriously vanished since they walked in the door. Not to mention they just seem... intimidating. Should I tell them you're booked?” Not one to shy away from a challenge or curiosity, you shake your head.

“No, go ahead and send them in. I will at least meet with them before I make a decision. Maybe hide anything else valuable that isn't nailed down.” Rose nods and then opens the door, waving the new clients into your office and then scurrying back to her desk.

Two large men in boots and cargo pants enter the room, both muscular and imposing, their faces impossible to read behind dark sunglasses. Wordlessly, they stand on either side of your office door, arms folded, as a diminutive woman with ink-black hair in leather saunters through the door. The defiant tilt of her chin belies her small stature.

“I'm Mara Sloane. My associates and I are in need of your services. We can more than compensate you for your efforts.” Sitting at your desk, you glance nonchalantly at the items on its surface, making a mental list.

“Of course,” you say. “Why don't you have a seat and tell me what it is that you need.” Ms. Sloane remains standing.

“We are looking for a utilitarian space, like a warehouse, in which we can both live and conduct business. We each need our own bedrooms, at least two bathrooms, a functional kitchen, a living room or common space, a computer lab, and a garage for multiple vehicles. The building needs to be nondescript, like it's always been there. We don't want something that will attract a lot of attention. It also needs ample storage for our shipments. We need a new location quickly, so it must be completed in two weeks. Are you willing to take the job?”

As you clear your throat to answer, the words “THE ANSWER IS YES” flash across your computer screen so fast that you're not convinced you saw them. None of them appears to have moved a muscle. How...?

Then Ms. Sloane snaps her fingers at the men, and one of them hands her a small duffel bag. She drops it on your desk and yanks the zipper open.

“Two hundred thousand Simoleons. That should cover your costs.” You nod, at a complete loss for words. “Good. We'll be in touch.”

“Wait!” you say, as they turn to leave. “What line of work did you say you were in?” Without pausing, Ms. Sloane calls out over her shoulder.

    “I didn't.”

And with that, they're gone. Rose darts into your office, eyes wide, and you both stare in shock at her tea cup and fountain pen sitting smack dab on the center of your desk.

    The Brief:
❖ 30x30 lot in the world of your choosing
    ❖ Nondescript, industrial building
    ❖ 3 bedrooms
    ❖ 2+ bathrooms
    ❖ Functional kitchen
    ❖ Common room
    ❖ Computer lab
    ❖ 2- or 3-car garage
    ❖ Storage for “shipments”
    ❖ Budget is $200,000

    Optional Challenge
Create Mara Sloane and her associates, Malik Yateem and Kurai Tsukino, and show them using the space you create. Mara is rebellious, brave, and a kleptomaniac. Malik is charismatic, handy, and a kleptomaniac. Kurai is a genius, computer whiz, and a kleptomaniac. You choose the other 2 traits for each.

Malik believes that possession is nine tenths of the law, while Kurai is more of a good digger.

He is a genius and computer whiz, lucky, and a snob. He keeps fit still, and he loves basketball ( and himself). His idol is Napoleon Bonaparte. Challenge #156 - The Game is Afoot

It was the rumble of an engine that drew your attention from the folio of house designs you were perusing while enjoying the beautiful fall weather on the porch. Pulling up to your curb with the grace of a large cat, is a fire engine red GTO with black racing stripes. Sunlight gleamed off the muscle car like it had just come off of a showroom floor.

As you admire the curves and lines of the car, another sight to admire steps out. A deep red long coat snaps in the playful fall wind as he walks towards the steps. With the wind tugging at his dark hair, this mysterious stranger looks as if he stepped out of the pages of a graphic novel.

Up close, you note an interesting blend of Spanish and Chinese heritage in a handsome face. Surprisingly intense amber colored eyes study you, making it seem as if all your secrets are available for him to read. Noting the folio in your hand, he smiles, a roguishly charming smile. “Are you the architect?”

“Um, yes.” You give yourself a shake and stand up to shake his hand. “Yes, I am. You have a beautiful car.”

“Thank you. My adopted father and I restored it together. My name is Jesus Wu.”

“It's nice to meet you Mr Wu, Did we have an appointment?”

“No. I was hoping to make one or just talk to you in person. I need a house.”

You smile, “Everyone needs a house Mr Wu.”

“you could put that on a T-shirt.”

Now you grin, “I should do that. Do you want to sit out here and talk about your house? Or do you want to go inside?”

“Out here is fine. It's beautiful out.” He sits down. After fetching a pen and paper, he starts in. “I would like a house on a nice lot, with a great view and a little isolated. The furthest lot out on Redwood Parkway in Sunset Valley is a great example of what I want. Obviously I need a good garage for my GTO. I’d like a master bedroom with en suite bathroom. A hot tub. I work from home so I’d like an office.”

“What kind of work do you do Mr Wu?” you inquire, taking rapid notes.

“I’m a private detective. I travel a lot, so I will need a good security system. My friend Mike and Reggie like to visit, so I need a guest bedroom. I also need a full bath. I’d like open concept. I have enemies and I want to have clear line of sight in case someone follows me home. I fence, as well as dance and do martial arts. I need some place to work out and train.”

“All of those are very doable. Any preferences in style or design features?”

“Not really. I have kind of an eclectic style. Comfortable.”

“Sounds good. When do you need your new home?”

“When can you have it? I’m staying at a hotel right now.”

    “2 weeks?”

He looks impressed. “2 weeks it is. Thanks.” He stands up to go.

    “Oh! Mr Wu!

    “Yes?”

    “What is your budget?”

    “75k.”

    “Alright. Thank you.”

“Later.” He says, casually tossing a wave over his shoulder as he heads back to his car. You watch him climb in and start the car. As he pulls away from the curb, you note a dark car with tinted windows pull away and follow…

    The Brief:
❖ The 25×30 lot on Redwood Parkway or a 25x35 lot from Edit Town
❖ Isolated or on the edges of the town.
❖ Master bedroom with en suite bath
    ❖ Guest bedroom
❖ 1 full bath in addition to en suite.
    ❖ Hot tub
    ❖ Garage
    ❖ Security system
    ❖ Open concept
    ❖ Eclectic style
❖ Training room for martial arts, dance and fencing

Challenge #157 - Reuse and Recycle

“Dear?” Rose’s voice inquires over your intercom. Her dog had recently had a litter of puppies. And ever since Rose had been feeling sentimental. “One of the puppies is missing.”

With a smile, you turn away from where you are playing with one of the wandering puppies. “I know. He’s in here with me. I think I need to adopt him.”

“Absolutely. In the mean time your next client, Ms. Bloodclaw, is here.”

“Okay. Send Ms. Bloodclaw in.” You giggle as you nudge the puppy with your foot and watch him attack said foot. The scratches in the shoe are totally worth it. Its the sound of high heels clipping briskly along the hallway that reminds you its time to get your game face on. Quickly you scoop the puppy into your lap and scoot under your desk. Just in time. The door opens and in walks a woman with a direct gaze and a regal air.

Thick, wavy hair of raven black is scooped back from a beautiful face. Green eyes the color of priceless emeralds smolder in a pale face over a pair of blood red lips. With a change of costume, she would easily be a perfect model for any vampire or gothic novel. Instead however she wore a perfectly tailored business suit that could only be described as a power suit. She held out a perfectly manicured hand and smiled. “Jade Bloodclaw, Bloodclaw Industries.”

You’ve heard of Bloodclaw Industries. 5 years ago it was a failing company with investors bailing out like rats on a sinking ship. Then it was reacquired by the company founder’s daughter. Now it was soaring rapidly north through the Fortune 500. And the company CEO, the woman who now sat across from you, was being featured on the cover of Sims magazine. She couldn’t be more than 30 if that.

You smile quickly, and exchange a firm, brisk handshake with her. “Its nice to meet you. Please have a seat.”

“Thank you. I appreciate your being able to meet me so quickly.” She crosses her legs and smoothes the sleek skirt in a habitual gesture. “I’ve heard so many good things about you and your work I thought you would have a waiting list.”

“We pride ourselves on completing our work quickly.”

“So I’ve heard. I have to admit though, what decided me was hearing one particular client of yours sing your praises.”

“Oh?” You inquire, trying not to grit your teeth as the puppy on your lap suddenly decides that the hand holding him was a chew toy.

“Douglas Curtis is not a man easily distracted from…” She pauses, reconsidering her words, “His personal concerns.” You can hear what she didn’t say: that Douglas Curtis wasn’t easily distracted from his ego.

“You know him?” You’re a bit surprised. She didn’t appear to you to handle the egotistical easily. You free your hand from the puppy.

“My company has consulted with him in the past in various endeavors.” She rolls her eyes, still smiling. “So when he was so quick to give you praise, I decided to bring this intriguing challenge to you.”

“I’m very interested to hear about this challenge,” You assure her, trying to catch the puppy before he wiggles his way off your lap.

“Good. Though I have a question first.”

    “Yes?”

“Whats on your lap? Puppy or kitten?” She grins at you, making you laugh.

“One of Rose’s puppies. Sorry.” You scoot back a little and show her.

“Not at all.” She holds out her hands and takes the puppy, playing with him on her lap as she speaks. “Bloodclaw Industries has a wide variety of interest from cybernetics to fashion to shipping. Recently I acquired a shipping company to bolster the shipping aspect of things. Since the plan is to use it primarily for moving company assets, I’m left with a number of large steel containers. I don’t want them to go to waste in some dockyard or in some landfill. That’s not efficient or healthy for the environment.

“It was a friend of mine, Erica, who suggested using them for housing. A kind of eco friendly house. So I thought I would put the challenge before you. I want to give you 4 steel containers. You convert them into a house, in any style or formation you want. This is a prototype. If it comes out like I expect it to, it will be the first of many. You have $25,000 for the interior, including things like windows and stairs. Though this is a prototype, I want prospective buyers to feel like this could be there home. Also, an appealing location, to lure those who might be put off by living in reused shipping containers.”

“That goes without saying. Will two weeks be fine?”

“Yes.” She checks her watch, “I’m afraid I must go.” Jade hands you a business card, “If you have any more questions. Please let me know.” She also hands the puppy back, “Thank you for seeing me.”

After she leaves, you abandon any pretense of work to continue playing with the puppy.

    Requirements:
    ❖ 30×20 lot
❖ 4 – 10×4 shipping containers placed in any formation you want.
Note: Prior to remodeling, show us the shipping container layout as if you had just finished stacking the containers.
    ❖ $25,000 for the remodel
    ❖ Full landscaping.

    Optional Challenge:
    Show the home’s new owner/owners!

    Have fun!

Challenge #159 - A Very Merry Christmas Part II

Sitting at home, curled up in front of your fire, you feel very pleased with yourself. You have made someone's Holiday so very special this year. As you find yourself nodding off to sleep you imagine that you can hear sleigh bells in the distance. You figure you must be dreaming as they sound like they are getting closer. They stop and as someone knocks on your front door you are wide awake. "Who on earth could be calling at this time on New Years Day?" You ask yourself. You slowly unfurl yourself from your cosy chair and reticently leave the warmth of the fire, heading to the front door. You open it to be faced with someone who looks a lot like Santa Claus!

"Ah, wonderful, I just wanted to come and thank you for completing The Lines' home so spectacularly."

You blink, figuring that you must actually still be asleep.

You nod mutely at the jolly gentleman dressed in red.

"I have another favour to ask of you though..." He says, almost shyly.

Again, unable to find your voice, you nod.

"Well, I'll ask Mrs C to email you all the details. Wishing you a Happy New Year!!"

Feeling a little absurd you nod once more.

And just like that he steps of your front porch and into the sleigh waiting at the end of your driveway. Sleigh bells start up as you find yourself staring at a dozen reindeer all hooked up to the front of it. Closing the door, you head to your office and unlock your tablet and there waiting for you is an email from mrandmrsc@thenorthpole.com. Shaking your head, you open it.

    My Dear,

Thank you once more for the wonderful job you did for The Lines family. It has come to my attention that we were rather remiss in our appraisal of the homeless situation here in Sunset Valley. There are a number of families that were without shelter over Mr C and mine's favourite day of the year. In our haste, I'm afraid we decided that The Shelter would not be needed and as so, we removed it (Fairy dust is such a powerful thing!!)

We were therefore hoping that you could build a new place for us to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Here is a list of our requests.
☆ It needs to be on a rather large lot, I would guess a lot size of 40x40 would be best.
☆ Three to four self-contained apartment style spaces (which would be suitable for a family of up to 5 including the possibility of a baby)
☆ A large recreation area with entertainment present for all ages (this should also be able to be converted into an emergency shelter)
☆ A play area outside for little ones
☆ A vegetable plot to help the families receive a balanced diet for little outlay

    Sim Challenge:
We would like to see how the less fortunate of Oasis Springs take to their new shelter.

Oh yes, Mr C and I are going to fund this build, so spend as much as you feel you have to!!

    Happy New Year to you!

    Mrs C

Finally, you find your voice. "Rose is never going to believe me!" You say out loud as you shake your head.

Challenge #160 - The Workout Zone

Deadline: Wednesday 28th January, Midnight CMT

Settling down in your visitors area with a cup of coffee and your portfolio, you feel proud of all you have accomplished in such a short time. Flicking through the pages you spy gorgeous colonial architecture, elegant Victorian spires, industrial chic, an interesting take on penthouse living and of course your very own custom built office. But what what challenge is going to come next?

After ten minutes, your coffee cup is drained and you are sat back at your desk awaiting your next client. Rose knocks on your door and shows her in, wait, that’s Judy Olsen. What is she doing back so soon?

You cross to the door and take her hand, “Judy, it’s lovely to see you again, is everything OK with the apartments we built for your and Don’s parents?”

“Oh yes, they are all so thrilled to have their own space, yet still be so close at hand. There have been some tense times, but things all seem to be settling down now, which is why I’m here.”

She takes a seat as Rose reappears with a tray of coffee and some tiny little caramel tartlets. Judy takes one look at the tray and laughs! “Oh my! How perfect!” She exclaims.

Intrigued, you arch your brows at her, inviting her to elaborate.

“Well, Don and I were thinking we could both do with losing a little weight, you know after all that holiday overindulgence!”

Thinking of all those extra calories you consumed over the period, you nod encouragingly.

“We want to start our own little gym! A place for people with like minds to gather, work out and chat. And we want you to build it for us.”

“We’ll need some space for classes, a weights room, an area devoted to cardio and of course some changing rooms and showers. We were also thinking about having a separate little juice bar come cafe for those who want to try and live a healthier lifestyle, but aren’t quite ready to take that step into the gym. What do you think?”

“I think it sounds wonderful and I am sure that you will be inundated with members. Did you have any thoughts on styles, colours and so on?”

“Well, we don’t want a modern space, too many gyms look so intimidating and perfect that people can be a little hesitant to even step foot inside. We just got back from Monte Vista, Don’s parents got engaged there and we were hoping you could try that Mediterranean style?”

This could be a bit of a challenge, you think to yourself. But you also think that it would perfectly suit the brief, so you nod and ask, “What about a budget?”

    “Well, how does $175,000 sound?”

“Like you will have the most tricked out charming gym in Sunset Valley! We’ll get started on it immediately, I think we should be able to get it completed in two weeks for you, ok?”

“Perfect, now let me eat one of these charming little tartlets, Don doesn’t need to know does he?” She says with a wink.

    Your Brief:

A Mediterranean style build with two separate buildings, on a 40x30 plot in Sunset Valley. The larger of the two is to be a comfortable gym, the smaller a café/juice bar.

The gym needs to include space for classes, a weights room, an area devoted to cardio and men's and women’s changing rooms and showers. It will need a reception area and an office for all the paperwork.

The café/juice bar needs to have a bar, tables and chairs, an office and a food preparation area. It will also need it’s own toilet facilities (bear in mind that this is a food preparation area and as such you will need two doors separating the main area from any WC).

    Your budget is $175,000.

    Sim Challenge:
We would like to see Don and Judy (you can find out all about Don and Judy here) in their newly created space and other Sims enjoying the gym and café, these can be Sims you have created or Sims already present in the game. We will need a picture of each area in use.

    Challenge #161 - Aisle Remember

Deadline: Wednesday 11th February, Midnight CMT

Your stomach growls, making you glance at your watch and wonder when Rose will be back with lunch. A tentative knock on your office door catches you by surprise. You rush to open the door in Rose's absence and find a slight, wisp of a young woman with alabaster skin, white-blonde hair and pale gray-blue eyes on the other side. She is an unusual beauty. Ethereal.

“I-I'm so sorry to intrude, but I wondered if you could help me,” she stammers, a faint worry line between her brows.

“Of course!” you say. “Please come have a seat and tell me what I can do for you, Ms...?”

“Lauren. Lauren Addler.” You shake hands, take your seats, and gesture for her to continue.

“Well, I recently got engaged to the love of my life, Mark Holloway.”

“That's wonderful!” you exclaim, confused by the shadow that crosses Ms. Addler's face.

“Normally, I would have months to plan the perfect wedding, but I only have two weeks. My father was diagnosed with a terminal, degenerative illness, and his condition is getting worse every day. He desperately wants to walk me down the aisle and give me away at my wedding, but we're running out of time. I had originally dreamed of a beautiful outdoor beach wedding, but my father would have difficulty walking on uneven surfaces in his condition. I've looked all over town for an indoor venue that would work, but I've come up empty. Would it be possible to build an all-inclusive wedding venue for both the ceremony and the reception and complete it in two weeks?” The look of worry on Ms. Addler's face has grown more intense.

“Absolutely,” you reassure her, clasping her small, clammy hands in your own. “What did you have in mind?”

“Well, it needs to be easy for my father to navigate, so if it has multiple levels, there must be an elevator. I'd like a beautiful hall for the ceremony, maybe with a romantic beach influence, blues and greens and sand tones, and lots of candlelight. We'll need a separate room for the reception with dining tables, the wedding party table, a buffet, a dance floor, a bar, and perhaps a live band. We have a budget of $175,000. Is that even possible?”

“Not only is it possible, but you can consider it as good as done. I will make some calls on your behalf and then be in touch with you soon.” Ms. Addler appears on the verge of tears as she thanks you and rushes off to look at wedding dresses.

    The Brief:
40x40 community lot in the world of your choosing
    Large hall for the ceremony
    Reception room with
    dining tables
    wedding party table
    buffet
    dance floor
    area for live band
Must be handicap accessible (*Note: if you do not have elevators in game, just build a small 2x2 room with doors on all levels to look like an elevator.)
Must have parking and restrooms available for guests
Romantic beach theme with candles and blues, greens, and sandy tones.
    Budget of $175,000

    Optional Challenge
Create Lauren, Mark, and Lauren's father and show the wedding and the reception. Lauren is good and a hopeless romantic. Mark is friendly and charismatic. Lauren's father, James, is family oriented and clumsy. The rest of the traits are up to you!

    Challenge #162 - The Innkeepers

Deadline: Wednesday 25th February, Midnight CMT.

“Turn left.” chirps your GPS as you cruise through town. Obediently you follow instructions, mentally reviewing the information for your up and coming appointment. ‘A renovated home to be turned into a B&B…This should be interesting. 2 clients. Apolla and Yanna Dismedousas…I wonder if they are related to Xantha? I’ll have to ask. Long time partners, moving here from Greece. Want to open a bed and breakfast and bought the old Scarborough house.” You glance out the window as the road curves gracefully around hills. “Pretty area. Quiet for those who want it but not far from town…Holy mother of- Is that it?!”

You stop your car abruptly, staring at the structure on the hill. For a few moments, all you can do is stare. The designer and esthete inside you aches as you pull your car over to the side of the road and get out. It's a large, sprawling building and you note good basic design structure, but dear gods. Whoever owned the house before did not do the house justice! Between the dirt brown paint, the weed-choked lawn…You pray that they got it cheap.

“Ugly as homemade sin isn’t it?” An amused female voice next to you makes you jump. Smiling at you are your clients. The one who spoke holds out her hand, “Hi. I’m Apolla. This is Yanna.”

As you shake hands and go through the usual greetings, you study the pair. Apolla, with her dark hair and eyes has a mouth made for smiling. There’s a little bit of mischievousness and playfulness about her that doesn’t detract from the warmth they both exude. Yanna is clearly the more stable of the two, with calm gray eyes and short blonde hair. Her grip is firm and reassuring.

Amenities completed, Apolla gestures to the building, “So, what do you think?”

As you struggle to find something nice to say about it, Yanna nudges her partner. “Polly, stop teasing.” Then smiles at you, “We know, it doesn’t look very much like an inn. We’re hoping you can help us with that. Let's go inside.”

“I’ll certainly do my best. What kind of spaces does it have?” as the three of you begin the climb up the walkway to the front door.

“Central room, open kitchen, 3 car garage, in-law suite over the garage, 2 rooms next to the large open living room, 6 bedrooms, including one in the finished basement and a lot of space to work with.” Recites Apolla. “Brace yourself. They were, uh, creative with their paint jobs.” and pulls the door open for you.”

“Wow.” Is all you can think to say as you go from room to room on the main floor.

“Yes,” says Yanna. “We know. It's horrifying. I think they bought all the paint and lighting on sale in bulk. And that’s the polite thoughts.”

You chuckle and try to look past the paint and the huge, clunky central staircase.

After completing the tour, you turn to the pair, “So, what would you like to see in the house after I’m done?”

“A non-tacky paint scheme and more than 2 styles of lights?” Polly says with a laugh.

    “I can guarantee that.”

Yanna squeezes Polly’s hand. “We’d like to have at least 5 guest suites, and by suite we mean with a bedroom and a bathroom at minimum. A place for Polly and I to live, like a little apartment. Updated kitchen…”

“Porches! This beautiful area cries out for porches for sitting, basking and enjoying outdoor activities.” Polly chimes in. “Landscaping obviously. The last people who owned the house, the Scarborough's, just couldn’t keep up with everything so they let it go. Updated windows, doors. I’d love to have a few small balconies for some of the suites if it wouldn’t destroy the look of the place.”

“The whole design is a Shingle design style.” You say, making notes. “Any particular interior design style you want?”

“Something warm, welcoming,” replies Yanna. “Casual, so people feel at home, but still upscale so people know they’re getting a treat. We’ll be serving breakfast and dinner, so a dining area needs to remain. Maybe an outdoor kitchen if you can swing it.”

“Yanna’s a fabulous cook,” boasts Polly. “If you could do a color scheme with white and yellow in our personal quarters that would be great. Those are our favorite colors.”

    “Anything else?”

“I think that about covers it,” Yanna says. “Oh! We were lucky. We talked to the company that built this place. They’ve got all their blueprints online now. The plan number is HWEPL69109 at eplans.com.

“We want to appeal mostly to couples and/or adults, but at least one room to accommodate kids if someone wants to bring the whole family.” Polly says as the three of you walk back to your cars.

“I think I can have this done in a few weeks. What kind of budget do you have in mind?”

“I think we could swing about (insert budget here.)” Polly shakes your hand again, “We’re really excited to see what you bring about.”

“Me too.” You say, before casting one last look at the house on the hill.

    Download house here: https://www.mediafire.com/?4tajj3idocqa5c4

    Requirements:
Budget, not including the cost of the downloaded lot:

Challenge #163 - Life After Uni

Challenge Deadline: Wednesday 25th February, Midnight CMT.

As you walk, head down towards your office, fumbling for your keys, you hear someone call out your name.

You think you recognise the voice, but you aren’t sure until you are bundled into a huge bear hug by a handsome young man.

“Kaiden!! What on earth are you doing here? Why aren’t you at school?”

“It’s Spring Break! I’m home for a week or two and thought I must come and see my favourite architect.”

Knowing that your adopted nephew is in his final year of a fine arts course, with a bias towards the culinary, you wonder if there is any chance you can finagle an invite to the Johnson’s home for dinner before he heads back.

Unlocking the office you notice that Kaiden heads straight for the coffee maker, he always did know how to make himself comfortable.

As he brings you your favourite coffee, he mumbles “I bought you something.”

As he reaches for the backpack he placed carefully on Rose’s desk, you wonder what he could have in there for you.

He opens the bag and pulls out a small Tupperware container.

Food! You think to yourself, already salivating at the thought of some of Kaiden’s previous creations.

He hands you the box and you see inside there is a tiny little house, made of spun sugar.

You open it very carefully and find that it is almost a carbon copy of the home you created for him when he first moved to college. You gaze at him speechless, feeling tears well up and your throat constricting.

“I just wanted to say thank you, for the house, I know I already said it a thousand times, but I thought you might like a little keepsake. It's given me the freedom I needed to keep my GPA up, and I met someone through it as well."

You detect a slight blush as he tells you about his new love, Aimee. He seems completely smitten.

"Anyway, the real reason I am here, is that I have been offered a job, in Oasis Springs."

"That's fantastic news." You say with feeling.

"Aimee and I were wondering if you could maybe build us a home over there?"

So this thing with Aimee sounds serious.

"Of course! I would be honoured. What sort of thing were you thinking of?"

"Well, we were thinking two bedrooms, we both love open plan living, so nothing too compartmentalised. Aimee is hoping to find a position on the Oasis News newspaper, so she'll need an office to work out of at home. And, of course, my kitchen."

You note the pride when he talks about his own kitchen.

"Any colour schemes, or style ideas?"

"Well, Aimee just loves bright, bold colours, but I'm not such a big fan, so if you can keep us both happy..."

"I'm sure I'll be able to think of something. What about architecture style?"

"Nothing too modern, neither of us wants to live in a white box, but then we don't want an old world cottage either."

With ideas swirling around your brain, you reassure Kaiden that you will definitely be able to get the project finished for him to go and see before the end of spring break.

"I knew you were the right person for the job, thanks again."

"You are more than welcome, you know that Kaiden. And I can't wait to meet Aimee."

"You sound like my Mom!" He says with a laugh.

He is leaving as Rose enters the office, Kaiden gives her the same beat hug that greeted her, and with promises of arranging a barbeque before he heads back to college, he leaves the office smiling.

"I always liked that boy." She says fondly.

"I know Rose, I know. Now I must go and give Kaye a call, see what she knows about this new young lady..."

    The Brief
    * 2 bedrooms
    * Separate office
    * Kitchen fit for a gourmet chef
    * Open plan
    * Choice of architecture nothing too modern or too old-fashioned
    * Combine Aimee's love of colour with Kaiden's slightly more sensible ideas
    * $85,000 budget

Challenge #164 - A Taste for Finer Things

Challenge Deadline: Tuesday 31st March, Midnight CMT

You are engrossed in the latest issue of Dwell when Rose’s dog begins barking frantically in alarm. You rush across your office and throw open your door to see a tall, spindly man with a very unhappy white cat hissing and digging its claws into the man’s shoulder. Rose is trying desperately to restrain her uncharacteristically agitated dog and shoots you a look that clearly says HELP!

“Why don’t you come in my office, sir,” you say, motioning to the office behind you. The man rushes past you into the office. As soon as the door closes, the cat becomes docile and begins to purr. Like its owner, the cat is long and thin, with white fur, faint gray striping, and the largest ears you’ve ever seen on a cat.

“What a peculiar cat. I’ve never seen one like that before, Mister..?”

“Corbett. Niles Corbett. My companion is Buerre Blanc. She is a Devon Rex.”

“It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Corbett. I apologize for the welcoming committee. My assistant's dog is usually very friendly, but this is the first time we've had a feline visitor. What can I do for you?” Mr. Corbett is a sour-looking man with a long face, a heavy brow, and a small down-turned mouth. His clothes are understated but clearly made of fine fabrics.

“Well, I'm in need of a new home for myself and Buerre Blanc,” he says, stroking the cat's pale fur. “I am a professional food critic and author of the blog Pour l'assiette. I work from home, so I need something with a comfortable study. I would also like two bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom, and another full bathroom for the rest of the house. I don't need a lot of room, as it's just Buerre Blanc and me, but I would like quality furnishings and a well-appointed kitchen with an attached room for wine storage. I am a collector of fine wines, so the wine storage should have separate temperature controls.”

“Is there a particular style of home you prefer, Mr. Corbett?”

“I gravitate toward French Country architecture. I enjoy the stately architecture and formal aesthetic.”

“What kind of budget are we dealing with, and how soon would you like your new home completed?”

“Apartment life has grown quite tiresome for me. Buerre Blanc and I are both ready for the quiet of our own home. We would like to be out of our apartment in two weeks. As for the budget, I am prepared to spend up to $85,000 and not a penny more. I trust that is feasible?”

“Absolutely! I will get started immediately!”

    THE BRIEF:
20x30 lot, in the world of your choice
    $85,000 budget
    French Country style architecture
2 bedrooms, 1 with en suite bathroom
1 extra full bath (a total of 2 bathrooms)
Well-appointed kitchen with separate wine storage
    Study
    Living Room
    Dining Area
    Garage
    Fine furnishings

    OPTIONAL CHALLENGE:
Create Niles Corbett and his cat Buerre Blanc (if you have Pets) and show them living in their new home. Niles is a natural cook, a loner, and a snob. Buerre Blanc is friendly, lazy, and neat.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: This house was built using a floor plan which had to be adjusted to fit the lot. The original was a three bedroom. Due to the inability to place a wall to square off the hallway and still keep the angle of the kitchen, the closet is a strange shape.
Niles Corbett is a food critic who loves to cook. He and his cat required a French Country 2 bedroom, 2 bath home including a room to store wine off the kitchen and a study. LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: For this challenge, first off I actually made the extended deadline so yea, :) but anyway I had fun with this one. For this build I wanted to do something smaller and more like a cottage than a chateau. I feel like Niles would appreciate the more tranquil and homey vibe. For this reason I chose to furnish in a more simply and cottage-like way (At least I hope that how it reads) To me fine furnishings aren't just high back chairs and marble -top tables, they are well wrought and simplicity personified. Basically not a lot of bells and whistles or flashy patters, but just quality pieces. So in the end I made a home that was more a home than a showpiece. Someplace to relax and enjoy a nice glass of wine.

Challenge #165 - Ryunoten, Attorneys at Law

    Thursday, 30th April Midnight CMT

The intercom beeped at your desk, startling you out of concentration. “Ah, yes Rose?”

Hearing the faint quaver in your voice, she suppresses a snicker and says “Your 4:30 is here. Shall I send them back?”

“Um, yes. Go ahead.” You manage to recover your dignity, making sure to save your work carefully, before there is a polite knock on the door. You stand up with a smile, as a man and a woman enter the room.

The woman is lovely, with a mass of coiled copper braids pinned at the back of her neck and large soft colored eyes. Her willowy figure is clad in an lady like business suit of sky blue. Following her in, his hand gently on the small of her back, is a handsome man that could only be described as Prince Charming with an Asian touch. His blonde hair is slightly longer than custom and his equally sleek frame is clad in a slate grey suit that compliments his companion’s. They make a very stunning couple, an impression confirmed when he holds his hand out, “Michael Ryunoten. This is my wife Evangeline.”

You shake hands with a smile, “Its lovely to meet you. I understand that you’re both lawyers?”

Evangeline smiles, a soothing gentle smile that relaxes you even further, “Yes. Michael specializes in business law. I have been fortunate enough to be hired as a new district attorney here.”

“Congratulations!” you say, offering them both something to drink.

“Thank you,” she says, locking eyes with you for a few moments. With an oddly sleepy wonder, you realize that her eyes are slowly changing from one pastel color to another.

“Jesus is an old friend of mine,” Michael says, startling you out of your sleepy hypnosis, “He recommended you.”

You smile with pleasure, “So you’re looking for a house?”

Evangeline shakes her head, sipping at the tea she requested in place of coffee. “Not yet, but definitely we are going to consult you about that later. We are staying at Jesus’s home and we love what you have done. For now, we are more interested in asking you to build us an office.”

“Not a problem,” You click your pen and prepare to take notes, “What would you like?”

“2 separate offices, but in the same building, as we share a legal library,” Michael says, “I’ll be taking clients there, so I’ll need a lobby and/ or reception area. Dream will be primarily working at the Courthouse, but when she’s not there she needs to have some place to work.”

    “Dream?”

She smiles fondly at her husband, “Dream is my nickname. My maiden name was Keeper.”

“Ahhh. And what would you like in your office?”

“Oh, the usual office accoutrements. If you could include a comfortable couch and decorate it in restful colors, I would be very satisfied.”

    “That’s easily accomplished.”

Michael speaks up again, “We want to be close to the center of town, but have a more suburban feel to it. I want people to feel comfortable and at ease coming to talk to me. Oh, parking, and landscaping…I think that’s everything. Sweetie?”

She thinks for a few moments, ticking off points on her fingertips, then smiles. “I think that covers everything.”

“I do have one question we haven’t covered.” You smile, “What budget am I working with this?”

“Well, since its not a large office we’re looking for,” Evangeline says, gently setting her tea cup on the tray, “We set aside $80,000 from our budget. Will that be sufficient?”

“Should be fine.” You rise and shake hands with them again, “I’ll get a contract emailed over to you by tomorrow night.”

    Brief

    - 2 offices in the same building
    - Shared library
    - Reception area
    - Parking
    - Suburban look but close to center of town
    - Soft colors and a couch in Evangeline’s office.
    - Budget: $80,000

Optional: Create and show Michael and Evangeline enjoying their new offices.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: Lot Size: 30x30
Address: Final play test on 12 Scuba Street, Island Paradise.
    Final Cost: $80,000
    LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS:
Theme: Modern, but welcoming. This lot is designed to fit in the in-between of the suburbs and urban big city. The building boasts floor to ceiling windows, plenty of natural lighting, oak and brushed nickel accents, and a relaxing color palette. Random selection has it placed in IP, but could easily fit into any city.
The first floor includes a reception, waiting room, conference room and public bathrooms. There is a front reception desk for support personel to welcome clients and collegues into the building. The expansive waiting area includes three short couches, a digital display, a java station, and a library. The conference room seats up to eight sims and includes a digital display for presentations and demonstrations. Two single use bath rooms are located down the hall from the conference room, each assigned to a separate gender. Emergency signage and exits exist at the front and back of the building.
The second floor includes two offices, two private baths, one outer hallway, and one shared records room/legal library. Michael Ryunoten's office is set up for receiving clients, with a desk, computer and guest seating as well as a mini conference area for consultations with clients. Evangeline Ryunoten's office also has a desk, computer and guest seating, but a couch and living chair in place of a conference space.
The exterior includes the AC unit, electrical, parking, building sign, exterior lighting and landscaping. There are six parking spaces in the well-lit lot. Landscaping includes a bed by the front entrance, fully green and fertolized lawn, and a planter that wraps three sides of the building which doubles as fence and window display for the floor to ceiling windows.
The lot is set as no visitors allowed, but would function well as a library, hang out, java hut, etc.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I'm into 3D lots so had a bit of fun with this one to create something unusual. Since Michael and Evangeline are lawyers, their office represents the scales of justice. The main floor reception desk welcomes their clients who can also go along the right corridor to freshen up in the washrooms before meeting their lawyers. To the left of the reception is the entrance to the elevator. The middle block of the second floor houses the visitors lounge and a snack and bar area great for cocktail and fundraising parties. Michael and Evangeline's offices are to the left and right of this area in separate wings. The top floor houses the shared library and research area.
Have your Sims purchase this lot as additional real estate - you can use the 'motherlode' cheat code to give them a 'loan', lol. If you set the lot type to Library lots of sims will visit to quietly read. To host parties, you can set this as a Park or other appropriate lot. I have Into the Future so I assign this lot as a Business Park. There usually is a lineup to purchase food so you might want to add a buffet table

    Build-n-Share Challenge #166 - Alien Encounters

    This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

“plum storm..” You mutter to yourself, “Why did it have to get so dark so quickly…?” You glower up at the heavy thunderclouds obscuring the evening sun before hurrying off towards your car. An abrupt beam of white light surrounding you stops you in your tracks. “What the-?” Whatever word you were about to say is cut off as the white light becomes blinding.

When your eyes clear, you realize that you aren’t outside anymore. Instead, you’re standing in a new room, with soft music playing from somewhere. Sitting on a kind of couch that looks like it was lifted from a pub, is a blue-skinned man. For a few moments, you just stare at him, absently taking in details like the Star Wars-esque spacer’s outfit, the blaster on his hip and the rapier on the couch next to him.

“Sorry about the abrupt pick up, but I’d rather keep this just between us.” He says, flashing a mischievous smile. “You okay?”

You close your eyes for a few moments, reminding yourself that you’ve dealt with equally weird things. A crime boss. Santa and his wife. An entire village of fairy tale characters. You take a deep breath and put on your professional smile, “Honestly? I could use a drink.” He laughs.

A few minutes later you’re ensconced on the couch with a glass full of some rich alien liquor in your hand. He has one as well and waits until you’ve had a drink of it before he speaks. “My name is Donnell Indigo, and I’ve heard that you’re the best in the area when it comes to satisfying…custom requirements.”

Cautiously you nod, “When it comes to building and interior design, there’s a lot I can do. Are you looking for a landing pad for your ah, space ship?”

“Sort of.” He crosses his legs, sipping his drink with appreciation. “I’m the kind of guy who is very much in demand you might say, and not always by people I’d like to spend time with. I need a place to lie low. This seems like a quiet place and its so far out in Wild Space, it's unlikely I’ll have to worry about anyone bothering me about picky little details.”

Unable to resist, you ask, “What kind of picky details?”

“Oh, small things. You know, comforting lonely women who forget to tell me they’re married, unexpected loans of personal property…little things that really aren’t all that important. Still, people get worked up by those kinds of things.”

‘Great. A space pirate.‘ You think to yourself. “I understand where that could be complicated.”

“Exactly. And sometimes a guy just needs a little downtime. Think you can help me out? I pay well.”

“Depends on what you’re looking for in a house,” you say cautiously. “I make it a point to avoid bothering people with those…picky little details you mentioned.”

“Don’t worry,” he says, raking the fingers of one hand through navy blue hair, “I’m looking for a place to live when I’m here. A bachelor’s pad. Something that’s comfortable with or without female company. But I want it to blend in. I don’t want something that’s going to stand out like a neon sign. I’d like comfortable, loungy furniture. A big masterpiece of a master bedroom and an equally luxurious master bath. I need a secure room in which to store my…souvenirs. And quick, discreet routes out of the house if someone does come snooping around.”

“Sounds doable. How much do I have to work with to make this haven of safety and romance come about?”

Donnell gets up. He comes back with a space-age briefcase and the decanter of liquor. After topping up your glass, and his own, he opens the briefcase and shows it to you. “Go ahead and count it.”

You nod once you’ve finished counting it, “I can do a lot with this. How will I contact you when I’m done?”

“I’ll check back in with you when I get back in the system.”

    “Sounds good.”

He smiles over the rim of his glass, trouble clearly being planned in his gaze. “Sounds very good.”

    Requirements:

    Bachelor pad with loungy furniture

    Luxurious master bedroom and bathroom.

Camouflaged in some way or other.

    Treasure Room

    Hidden escape routes

    Budget: 75k

    OPTIONAL CHALLENGE:
“So are you a space pirate, Mr. Indigo.” She asked me her luminescent green eyes staring up at me innocently, but it was always the innocent ones that turned you in when they found their bed empty in the morning. I threw back my head and laughed shaking out my navy blue hair as it hung just to my shoulders. She smiled brilliantly showing her slightly pointed teeth. “No my dear, not a pirate, more like a businessman. All I do is find new homes for things that would otherwise just be collecting dust.” I said delicately running my fingers through her black hair, careful to avoid the fleshy tendrils that had the unpleasant habit of shocking men who got too close. She purred in contentment. “If my husband were to find out he would flay you alive.” She said and I sighed, they always had to bring up the husband’s flaying me alive. Can’t anyone just tell me how dashingly handsome I am and leave it at that, but no they have to go as far as to tell me how I will die a gruesome death if we were caught. Great pillow talk that was, killed the mood right away, pun totally intended. I sat up unwrapping my arm from around her and then stood up from the bed. I could see the hurt in her eyes as I picked up my shirt from the floor and slipped it over my head. I rescued my blaster from the chair and clinched the belt into place. I grabbed the rapier from an impaled pillow, goose down spilling everywhere when it came loose and I slid the thin sword into its sheathe opposite the blaster. It was always good to have a backup. I thought patting the two weapons fondly before I turned back to the girl still lying in bed. She pulled the covers up to her chest as she sat up. “You’re leaving?” she asked and I smiled dashingly at her. “That’s what I do sweetheart, now be a dear and tell me where your husband keeps all his lovey dust magnets.”
I was halfway across the galaxy before the news bulletin flashed across the screen with a warrant for my arrest. How many was that now? I’d lost count after the sixteenth. I glanced over my shoulder to see the pile of gleaming gems the girl had been kind enough to show me. Surely she was crying at her husband’s feet right now, weaving a tale of robbery and how I forced her. All those girls were the same, rich husbands who are too busy to show them any love. They bite at the first sign of affection. I suppose in a way, I did feel sorry for them, abandonment was something I knew well. The bitter thoughts of my own mother crowded into my head for a moment before I shoved them out and cranked up the stereo the loud beat of the music drowning out everything else. Space pirate, businessman, what was the difference really? We were both as crooked as a drunk man’s walking. I just took what I wanted and they paid blood money for it. So who was the more evil of men? I flicked on the auto pilot and fetched myself a drink. I drank the alcohol in three gulps feeling it burn down my throat in a comforting fashion. That was when things went bad. My music cut off and an announcement blared through the intercom. “Donnell Indigo, you are under arrest, cut your engines and prepare to be boarded.” Announced a voice I knew like the back of my hand. I slid into the pilot’s seat and flicked the controls to manual. “Hello Blair, long time no see.” I said back cheerfully as I messed with the controls getting ready to run. “Donnie, I know what you’re thinking, but I’ve really got you surrounded this time.” Blair said and I switched on the video screen so I could see my sister’s blue face drawn up into a scowl, her navy hair tied back tightly into a braid. “Come on sis, you know you say that every time.” I said still flipping controls and then checking her ships arrangement looking for a way out. Blair sighed, “Donnie please, don’t you ever get tired of running, just return the gems and maybe we can cut you a deal.” “Thanks, but no thanks.” I said and then gunned it. “Donnie.” Blair screamed as I headed straight for her ship. “You’re going to kill us both.” She continued and I smiled like a madman. “Donnie…Donnie don’t do this.” Blair almost whispered and my computer screamed as a weapons lock was detected, “Please don’t do this.” “Sorry sis, you were always the good one. The best big sister a vagrant like me could ask for.” I said, “Bye Blair.” I said and I heard Blair stifle a sob as the weapons fired and I watched the beam of light coming directly at me. “Wait for it, wait for it.” I mumbled under my breath as the computer screamed at me. The light was so close now that I could almost feel its heat. “Now.” I screamed and laughed crazily as I dove down the light just skimming my tail fin as I ducked under Blair’s ship and skimmed her belly all the way to freedom. “Catch you later Blair.” I said and just before I jumped I heard Blair scream, “Donnie…” like only a big sister could, ah was there a sweeter sound in the whole universe? I reclined in my chair, and then sighed looking over my shoulder again at the pile of gems that sat there. Now their beauty looked a little colder and harsher, but this was the life I’d chosen. I sighed again looking forward again at the endless expanses of space around me, maybe Blair was right and it was time to stop running. Maybe it was time to get a little place of my own for when I was felling nostalgic like this. I put my boots up on the dashboard and leaned back further, I had heard of this architect on Earth, this little out of way planet deep in Wild Space, who was known to cater to even the most unusual of requests. I looked at the gems once again and this time they seemed to shimmer with promise.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 40 X40; 77 Subalpine Blvd Hidden Springs; Final Cost: 74,946
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: For this home I really wanted to build it into a cliff for the camouflaging aspect so I kind of wanted the front of the house to be more nondescript and maybe a bit hidden, but I did want to make this a modern-like building so it goes deeper into the lot and cantilevers over the pond a bit. The treasure room is on the ground floor accessed through a sliding bookcase door in the study, there is also a hidden exit within that room that leads to the back patio. Most of the rooms have a least two exits one to the outside, just so that get a-ways are easy for Donnell, but without being to obvious about it at the same time. The Master suite has its own deck with views of the pond and ocean beyond with open master closet and bathroom off of that. The sunken living room makes it more cozy and more intimate. Um... I think that's about it, Hope you enjoy.

It features a large bed, custom built fireplace/tv combo, 3 secret exits, a secret passage to the treasure room one level down and a multi head shower. Build-n-Share Challenge #167 - Sunset Valley Orphanage

Challenge Deadline: Tuesday 30th June, Midnight CMT.

Rose buzzes through, you put down your latest copy of Dwell and prepare to meet your new client.

The door opens and you are greeted effusively by a woman with platinum blonde hair and startlingly blue eyes.

"Oh my dear, it's so wonderful to finally meet you!"

Shaking hands you catch the scent of her perfume and find yourself wondering what it is.

"Douglas has told me all about you and your wonderful team, and I find myself in need of an architect and builder."

"Now, I have a very important brief for you, it's not something I have ever seen on Sunset Valley, but it is something that I feel very strongly about."

As she catches her breath you go to speak.

    "Of...."

"I have noticed a huge number of orphans in the world, who all seem to be sent out on their own to fend for themselves, this seems an atrocious situation to me. Many a time, I have come across an exceedingly large expanse of land, with nought but a tiny little home, which can't hold more than the bare necessities."

"I see." You manage to interject between sentences.

"You created such a wonderful library for Douglas, I simply can't imagine another builder or architect I could entrust such a project to."

"I want you to build an orphanage, but nothing like those austere prison blocks that are prevalent both here and back home in England. Somewhere the children will feel safe and able to learn the lessons of life, as well as a basic education."

You wait patiently for her to start her next sentence, but find her looking at you expectantly.

"So, you want us to build you an orphanage?" Your mind boggles, you have never undertaken such a task before.

    "That is correct." She says.

"How many orphans do you want to cater for?" You ask, your mind racing.

"Let's start with 12, shall we, we might have to look at another centre later on though."

"So, a place for 12 orphans, did you want a dormitory style build or separate bedrooms?"

"Hmmm, a good question, how about a mix of both, a dormitory for four, and bedrooms that sleep two, for both the girls and the boys. Is that acceptable?"

"I think we can manage that. Did I hear you correctly when you said you wanted them to be able to access a basic education at the site?"

    "Yes, you did."

"So a classroom or two then?"

"Yes, that would probably be best."

"How about a creche, an early years centre for the children and then a formal classroom for the teenagers?"

"Why that sounds perfect! Oh, there would need to be a couple of spare bedrooms for staff and so on, and I would like to be able to stay on some occasions."

This job just seemed to keep getting bigger and bigger you think to yourself.

"Oh and a large hall, a multipurpose area, with a kitchen for meal times, assemblies, dances and fundraising events."

"Is there anything else you can think of?" You ask, crossing your fingers that this is the extent of the mammoth task.

"Apart from a swimming pool and a small gymnasium no, I think we have covered everything."

    "Except the budget." You add.

"Of course, how forgetful of me, let's say a total cost of no more than $650,000 shall we."

Breathing a huge sigh of relief at the funds available you say "Ok Miss Montpellier, I am hopeful that we can get this together for you in two weeks."

"Wonderful, thank you for seeing me this afternoon, and I look forwards to seeing what your team come up with."

    The Brief:

☆ 50x50 lot in Sunset Valley

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I was going for a cozy home look with my build, while still capturing the look of an orphanage. I wanted to make it look so the orphans would be comfortable and think of this lot as a home and think of the staff and other children as family. Of course, there wasn't enough room for the staff and Miss Montpellier to sleep, so I added 3 separate rooms off to the side for them. While this lot looks like a 3-story family home, it still captures the love and image that an orphanage should be.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: When I think of orphanages I think of converted Victorian manors. Why, I guess I've watched to many movies ;) Anyway so going with what felt right I built a Victorian inspired manor that used to be one the home of some fabulously wealthy sim who died without an heir and decided to donate it to Miss Montpellier to be rehabbed and redone to make it the perfect home for children who had no where else to live. To that end instead of a true multipurpose room, there is the ballroom attached to the kitchen that could be used for fundraisers or rainy day playtime. The two classrooms are also on the first floor and for the younger children I wanted to make it more of a hang out so the bottom of the walls I'd imagine as chalkboard paint (Which is why it is black, but unfortunately actually chalkboard paint isn't in the sims, so imagination must do) There is one staff room downstairs for the most senior staff member or Miss Montpellier who might need a bit of a break from children. Upstairs the boys are on the right side of the house and the girls + toddlers are on the left separated by the other staff rooms. In the basement is the pool, boys and girls locker rooms, gym, bathroom and a little rec. room. Outside the outdoor pool is fenced off to keep people from falling in since it is so close to the stairs and the pond is separated from the play-yard by that outdoor eating area. The play house has it's own white picket fence and I could see the kids all trying to sleep in there. Okay I think that's about it sorry for the long description, hope you enjoy.

    Build-n-Share Challenge #168 - The Novelist

Challenge Deadline: Friday 31st of July, Midnight CMT.

“Jade! How lovely to see you!” You exclaim. Going to the grocery store is always fun for you. You run into everyone at sometime or other it seems. In this case, its literally. “Sorry for bumping your cart.”

“Its okay,” ‘Jade’ smiles at you with lips painted wine red. “However you have the wrong sister.” You step back, studying her. Emerald green eyes glitter in amusement at you, a deeper warmer look than Jade’s pale green business like stare. Instead of being pulled stylishly but efficiently back from her face, the sister’s raven hair curls romantically around her face and over her shoulders. Her dress, made of a rich burgundy velvet, is casually and elegantly gothic in style. Otherwise, she’s identical to Jade Bloodclaw.

    “I’m sorry,” you say sheepishly.

“Not at all. Being identical twins, it happens all the time.” She moves her cart to the side ot let someone else get by. “My name is Fire Bloodclaw.”

You shake hands with her, introducing yourself. Then a light bulb blinks on. “Fire Bloodclaw? The novelist? The one who wrote Empire of Jade?”

She laughs a sensual laugh, “The same. You’ve read it?”

“I haven’t. My assistant however raved about it. What brings you to town?”

“Change of atmosphere.” She smiles, “I was actually hoping to see you. My sister is delighted with the work you’ve done for her and trust me, Jade is incredibly hard to please when it comes to work.”

“Great to hear.” You look around. “Do you know Purr’s café?”

    “Who doesn’t?” Fire laughs.

“Why don’t we meet there and talk about what you’re looking for?”

    “Sounds great. An hour?”

An hour later, the two of you are settled into one of the booths at Purrsia’s place. Unsurprisingly, there is a tray of blissfully delicious tapas sitting between the two of you. Fire smiles, “I knew Purrsia when I was in college. She and her sister lived in the same house we did. She did all the cooking to help pay for her rent. It was lovely.”

You grin, “I bet you ate better than the Ramen diet I lived on.”

Fire laughs, “If you didn’t mind being an experiment for new recipes, yes…But the experiments didn’t always work out. Those were the nights when Tums was greatly in demand.” She smiles, “Now, on to why I was hoping to talk to you.”

“Someplace to store your tums?” You quip, making her chuckle again.

“Not quite. I’m looking for a home of my own. I’ve been living with Jade, but her apartment really isn’t my style. She’s the penthouse apartment kind. I’m more the secluded dramatic type.”

“So what kind of house are you looking for?” You pull out your ever present note book.

“Something with a dramatic view. Private. When I loose myself in my work, I hate being distracted by petty things like time of day or last time I ate something. It needs to be soothing…and, I shamelessly admit, fairly luxurious in terms of comfort. I never know where I’ll end up writing. I need at least 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. And if you can squeeze it in, a new laptop. State of the art please. My old one fried itself this morning and I’m using Jade’s computer…something else that is not conducive to concentration. I have 75k to put towards this. Decent entertainment center and a library. I love stories in all forms.”

“None of that is out of reach. Can you give me a little while?”

“Sure. I have a book tour coming up soon anyway.”

“Excellent.” You reach for the check, only to have her lightly bat your hand away.

    “My treat,” she insists.

    The Brief:

    *75k budget
    *2 bedrooms, 2 bath
    *Secluded lot with dramatic view
    *Library
    *State of the art laptop
    *Decent entertainment center
    *Luxurious surroundings

Fire Bloodclaw is an author who loves Gothic anything! She even dresses in Gothic-style clothing. But she also loves a bit of modern in her home, because comfort far outweighs style! She is a Gemini, which is strange since she is also a twin. Unlike her sister, she has a very soft, romantic side. She loves to flirt, in sharp contrast to her otherwise severely proper manners. She is very friendly to everyone she meets. Sometimes she is too friendly and/or flirty, and she has to break someone's heart. Okay, more often than not, she has to break someone's heart. She is a huge fan of all things supernatural; she brings her love of the supernatural to her books. Her latest book features vampires, werewolves, and a mysterious witch! She often writes to Dark Wave music or while eating her favorite potato and truffle tort. Her favorite color is spiceberry.
    LEVEL: intermediate
LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 30x30, Aurora Skies across from Basalt Beach lot on Geothermal Lane, $74,995
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Fire stressed the need to be isolated as well as having a dramatic view (which helps her set scenes for her novels) from her new home. The lot in Aurora Skies has 3 dramatic views! The colors and architecture are Gothic, but not every item in the house is Gothic. She wanted a modern kitchen and comfort above all else in her home. Since she is often on the road doing book-signings, outdoor maintenance has been kept at a minimum. But there is plenty of space to sit and write!! Also, she likes old-fashioned things, like riding a bike and drying her clothes on the line outside. She is a bit of a closet environmentalist.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: For this build I wanted to build a beach house for three reasons, the first being that dramatic views and the ocean are practically synonyms. The second because what is more private then a private island and the third was that I had just watched a waterfall tutorial on YouTube and I really wanted to try it out. To that end I wanted to build something simple because Fire doesn't want the hassle of a complicated home upkeep and I wanted something a bit eclectic, but still cozy and tasteful because to me all authors are a bit on the fringe and always thinking creatively, seeing things for what they could be and not necessarily what they are. The library's decorations were kept to a minimum to reduce distractions (If you can ignore that view) in case Fire wanted to do some serious binge writing and almost every room has somewhere to sit in case she decides to take her laptop on the road. Alright I think that's about it, hope you enjoy.

    Build-n-Share Challenge #169 - A Patchwork Family

Challenge Deadline: Monday 31st of August, Midnight CMT.

You pull up to Central Park, scanning the expanse of green grass for your next client. Crossing the footbridge over the pond, you see a tanned handsome man jogging toward you, his face split in an easy smile. “Hi! I'm Miguel Salvador. I recognized you from the article in the Sunset Gazette about the new orphanage.” He shakes your hand warmly.

“It's so nice to meet you, Mr. Salvador,” you say.

“Please, call me Miguel. Let me introduce you to my family.” He leads you across the field to a red and white gingham picnic blanket spread beneath an enormous shade tree. A beautiful mocha-skinned woman with short, tight curls sits crossed-legged, her very pregnant belly covered in a pool of flowing bohemian fabrics. Twin Asian toddlers sit with her, busily playing with a xylophone and peg blocks, their cherubic faces furrowed intently beneath their pig tails. “This is my wife, Serena, and two of our children, Lihua and Liling.” Serena extends her hand up to you, metal bracelets jangling as they slide up her slender arm.

“It's wonderful to meet you,” you say, shaking Serena's hand. “Your family is beautiful!”

“Oh, the twins are not our only children,” Serena says with a chuckle. “Our eldest son, Nketi, is over there playing frisbee with our younger son, Tuyen.” Her voice drops to a low whisper, “Our other daughter, Aleela, is hiding behind this tree. She's shy.” Two dark eyes peep out from behind the tree, catch your gaze, and then disappear. Serena pats her belly gently. “And last but not least, we have Maya here, who should be making her debut in a few more weeks.”

    “Incredible,” you breathe.

Miguel motions for you to have a seat and then sits beside Serena, looping an arm over her shoulders. “Serena and I have a special place in our hearts for kids in the system. We were both in the foster system and aged out before we could be adopted. So we've made it our mission to bring as many kids into our home as we can handle. Which is why we need your help. We are currently living in a tiny apartment with five children. With a sixth on the way, we're really bursting at the seams.”

“I bet! What do you need in your new home?”

“We need three or four bedrooms plus a nursery, and at least two and a half bathrooms,” Miguel says. “I teach middle school at the Community School for the Gifted and have lots of papers to grade, so I need some sort of office space. If it could double as study space for the kids, too, that would be great.”

“Meal times are hectic, so we'd love a large, open kitchen with plenty of prep space and enough places for everyone to have a seat at the table,” Serena adds. “We generate an enormous amount of laundry, so a laundry or mudroom is a must. The kids also need some decent green space to play in. There is nowhere for them to play at the apartment complex, which is why we're at the park today.”

“Okay, that all sounds feasible,” you say. “Is there anything else you need?”

Miguel touches the bangles on Serena's arm. “Serena makes jewelry and sells it at the consignment store. She also likes to paint and teaches youth art camp at the Sunset Institute of Modern Art, so some sort of art space would be good for her.”

“What style of home did you have in mind?” you ask.

“We like contemporary and prairie style homes, but casual and family friendly rather than cold and museum-like,” Serena says. “Our family is a patchwork of different ethnicities. Nketi is from Kenya, Aleela is from Zambia, Tuyen is Vietnamese, the twins came from China, and Miguel is Puerto Rican. I'd love for the interior of the home to have things that remind each child of their own heritage. We like a warm color palette – reds, oranges, and yellows – but it shouldn't be garish. Does that make sense?”

“Absolutely! We can have your home finished by the end of the month. Will that work?”

Serena puts a loving hand on her belly and says with a smile, “Just in time.”

    The Brief:

    *30x30 lot
*3-4 bedrooms, plus a nursery (the home should have 3 cribs for the twins and the new baby)
    *at least 2 ½ bathrooms
    *laundry/mudroom
    *large open kitchen
    *warm color palette
    *contemporary or prairie style home
    *comfortable, casual interior
*items that honor the family's varied heritage
    *office/study space
    *art space
*a green space for the kids to play in
    *$110K budget

    Optional Challenge:

Make the family and show them living in their new space. Miguel is a teacher who is family oriented, nurturing, and charismatic. Serena is family oriented, artistic, and handy. Nketi is a clumsy child who loves to read. Aleela is a shy child who loves animals. Tuyen is a perfectionist child who is over-emotional. The twins look identical, but are very different. Lihua is a budding virtuoso, while her sister, Liling, is athletic. Maya's traits remain to be seen. Or you can download the family from the exchange and show them in their new home. http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=8720544

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 30x30, 1057 University Drive(sims university world), 98,013 simoleons
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I was going for what the Salvador's asked for, warm color palette, hence the oranges, browns, and greens throughout the home. Including 2 full bathrooms, and 1 half bathroom, three bedrooms, one for Tuyen and Nketi, one for Aleela, and one for Miguel and Serena. Aleela's bedroom has lots of wood incorporated to her room, since being from Zambia, it has lots of woodland, and based on my 'research' Zambia themed bedrooms have a wood theme going on. Nketi and Tuyen are from Vietnam and Kenya, so I included in an animal rug, nothing much included in here , the twins are from China, so I included toyboxes and cribs with pandas, since the Giant Panda originates from China, including little generic nursery things for the new baby to use.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 30 X 30; 17 Sweetwater Loop, Twinbrook; Final Cost: 109,948
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: The prompt for this one said either a prairie or contemporary style and instantly I thought of Frank Lloyd Wright considering his most famous designs are done in a prairie style. Anyway I'm not saying that I can design on the same level as Wright, just that I wanted to nod my hat to him on this one. His homes, as beautiful as they are were always intended to be comfortable family homes and that was the direction I wanted to go. I tried to stick to a warm color palette (even though personally I prefer cool colors) and make the spaces, although quite large, feel intimate and cozy with groupings of furniture and easy seating areas. I actually found meshing cultural pieces to be quite challenging because I wanted to stick with built-ins that were period specific and other furniture to match, but I tried to fight against that instinct and make the cultural pieces something less obvious, like a piece of art or sculpture. Though I'll admit I did have fun with that upstairs office. That office I thought could be just for Miguel whereas the kids could have the one downstairs. I know he said he didn't mind sharing, but honestly who wants to share an office with kids expressly when work actually needs to get done. I also tried to make most of bedrooms on-suites just so there wouldn't be that much of a bathroom fight and there is plenty of porch space should the kids need a rainy day play-yard. Alright I think that's about it. Hope you enjoy.

    Build-n-Share Challenge #170 - Reuse and Recycle 2

Challenge Deadline: Wednesday 30th September, Midnight CMT

Jade came through your office door with the look of a woman who couldn't be more pleased with life. After the ritual small talk, and a cup of coffee, she jumps into her purpose for being there. "I am incredibly impressed with how you handled the shipping container house. Everything from the design, to the décor, to the selling price was above my expectations. I've also received a very long and very happy letter from the purchasers about their new house."

You smile happily, leaning back in your chair. This kind of thing makes the job worth doing.

Jade sips her coffee before continuing, "I want you to build 3 more houses with shipping containers."

You blink and sit up, "3? Just like the first? You have more buyers already?"

"No. These are 3 more prototypes. I want each one on a different lot, and each one with a different design style. They will also have a different price point. Like the first one, I'll want you to provide the schematics and files so that we can produce them to order later." Jade pulls a file folder out of her briefcase and hands it to you. "All the information is in there." She drinks her coffee, waiting for you to scan the information.

When you're done, you think for a few moments then look up, "This will be tricky to get done in 2 weeks. Can I have 3?"

"Sure." Jade stands, putting her cup on the tray. "You have my number if you have any questions. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with."

"Me too," you think, as Rose shows her out.

    Build-n-Share Challenge #171 - The Swan Song

Challenge Deadline: Saturday 31st of October, Midnight CMT.

You sigh softly, looking at your schedule for the next month. With a twist in your gut, you stare at the blank slots for each day. There was once a time when you had a new appointment, a new challenge every 2 weeks. Your time slots would be filled in with meetings about plans and permits and supplies and crew hours. Now though, you're considering yourself lucky with one appointment per month. Some of your own crew has moved on to new cities like Willow Creek, where work is plentiful. Perhaps you should do the same, you think, tapping your fingers on the desk. The work just isn't there anymore...

You swivel to look out your office window, noting the sad look in your reflection. For several minutes you stare out the window, wrestling with the fact that you don't really want to go. But facts are facts. A business has to run, and the business isn't running. Perhaps though, there is a way to drum up business.

There was a lovely lot you had just sitting there with nothing on it. Purchased a while ago, you had intended on building a house for the sole purpose of displaying your creativity and skills. No time like the present. For several minutes you jot down notes. Satisfied with your ideas for the moment, you cast a quick prayer that this will bring back work. If it doesn't, then there will be no choice but to accept the inevitable. Then you reach for the phone to call in a favor owed you by a friend at the bank.

    Requirements:

    3 bed, 2.5 bath
    Budget $100k
    40x40 lot, fully landscaped
Show off your skill and creativity. Go wild!

Admin note: With the arrival of Sims 4, we've seen a serious decline in participation of the Sims 3 BNS. It takes a lot of time and effort on our part to maintain the challenges and forums. It's really disheartening to see that there are no entries to an offered challenge. And we wonder if there's simply not enough people who are steadily interested and able to enter these competitions, or if theres another reason. So, after much discussion, we've come to the conclusion that unless we receive at least 5 minimum entries for this challenge, we may have to say good bye to the Sims 3 BNS challenge. It breaks our hearts to think of having to do this. If you think there's a particular reason that participation has dropped, please let us know. We are ALWAYS open to suggestions, comments, and requests. We love you guys, no matter what happens.

    My uploaded description:
Cheery on the outside, serene on the inside, this 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath home, located at 455 Sunnyside Blvd in SV, features an open floorplan, ideal for both family life and entertaining. Located on the waterfront in idyllic, pre-global-warming Sunset Valley, where rising sea levels aren't a threat to this beautiful ground-level, one-story home. Outdoor amenities include a hot tub on the back patio and an inground pool. By suzses for Build-N-Share Challenge #171.

    Additional info:
I really like to build a playable house, with good routing and no MOO problems. The lot is very lightly MOO'd and has had two sims and their dog living in it for a period of time checking all that out. The sims are very handy and great gardeners, and they've left the place in tip-top shape (appliances are unbreakable, the fireplace fireproof, and the garden plants are excellent to perfect quality).
    CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Yes.
CREDIT TO SIMMERS FOR CUSTOM CONTENT USED: No actual third-party CC. Doe contain CAP patterns. Does contain hidden stencils of rabbit print art (in the living room) that I obtained from AznSensei at some point. I don't see them in his Sims 3 uploads at this time. The five CAP patterns include two woods from Around The Sims. I believe the others are the vertical outdoor siding wood, the waffle pattern upholstery in the living room, and *possibly* the wallpaper top used in the master bedroom/bath. If not that, I'm not sure which is the fifth pattern.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: When I think of the most creative thing I can think of house-wise, it has to be treehouses. Why, probably because they inspire wonder and show people a different view of the world. One from the trees instead of the ground. That all being said I wanted to build a sort of treehouse for grown-ups while capturing the same principle it would be a more workable home. So I built it on stilts over a pond. I kind of wanted to build something that was a bit modern, but also cozy like a mountain ski lodge where people would love to curl up by the window and read a good book while enjoying the scenery. Alright I think that's about it. Hope you enjoy.

    Build-n-Share Challenge #172 - Fall Designer Showdown

Challenge Deadline: Monday 30th of November, Midnight CMT.

We had a great show of support for the last challenge. Let's keep it going with the Fall Designer Showdown! Download this shell from the exchange: http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=8784784. Place it at 99 Landgraab Avenue in Sunset Valley. Choose one of the 4 items on the front lawn as your inspiration piece, and then decorate and landscape with that item in mind. The other three items can either be used for your build or deleted for additional funds. The inspiration item must appear somewhere in your build—be creative!

    YOU MAY...

**Change the style of doors, windows, stairs, fireplace, columns, and archways provided that you keep the same dimensions and location. A 1-tile door may only be replaced with a 1-tile door; however, three 1-tile windows that are grouped together may be replaced by 3 singles, a single and a 2-tile window, or a 3-tile window.

**Change the style of fencing on the front porch and the 2nd floor, provided that you keep the same layout. Swapping half-walls for fencing is permitted.

**Change any flooring as you see fit.

**Change the style of roofing or even redraw the roof entirely for a different look.

**Add fencing to the exterior lot for a rear patio, boundary fence, or decorative accents.

**Add columns as a decorative feature either for architectural interest or for MOO purposes.

**Designate the spaces as you see fit.

    YOU MAY NOT...

**Add walls, remove walls, or replace walls with fencing, half-walls, etc.

**Add additional doors, windows, stairs, arches, fireplaces, a basement, or any detached outbuildings.

    REQUIREMENTS:

--Build should NOT exceed $110K, INCLUDING the initial cost of the shell.

--Build should include 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. You decide where.

--Inspiration object must be included somewhere in your build.

--Judges should be able to determine what object you chose based on your design choices.

    --Fully landscaped.

    OPTIONAL CHALLENGE
Create a Sim client (or clients) related to your inspiration object. Give their back-story and show them using the finished space.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Harbour Moorings, as the name suggests, has a nautical theme to which end you will know what the inspirational object was. I have used the object a couple of times in the house. The décor used is mainly a palette of blues, greys, white and cream. There is an occasional splash of red here and there to contrast. Wooden floors used throughout to give that luxury ocean liner feel. Tiles and panelling also used throughout. Lots of clutter used again with the nautical theme. I uploaded to the Exchange minus the CC décor I used but used the CC in my photos. My overall final cost includes the cost of the CC.
    CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Yes please!

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: I made a household and designed the home especially for them. The Towlers, Matt and Lani, are sims I had in a little save in Mariner's Reach, a very tiny world made by Johhnywr. They weren't a couple there but are now. Their backstory is that they are a young professional couple relocating to Sunset Valley for Matt's work. He went to college in Sunset Valley and then moved to Mariner's Reach a short while after graduating to work and enjoy island life. Lani is a native of the island, and this is her first time to the mainland. Even though she's very excited for this new adventure, and looking forward to changing seasons and a larger town, Matt is concerned she won't adjust. He wants everything to be perfect when she arrives in town. So, for him it's all about what Lani likes and needs. However, after a little digging, it becomes apparent that this selfless husband has some challenges ahead and adjustments to make, too.

Their home includes an art studio for Lani, who will be working free lance from their home, as well as a workout area where she can practice her dancing she does on the side. She loves turquoise and any kind of flowers, and Matt wants to make sure to include plenty of both to make her feel at home.

Matt eventually makes known that he likes "green, I suppose, any shade." From his wardrobe, it appears he favors drab. He's a computer gaming designer by profession but has always been an active, outdoorsy kind of guy. He loves water sports but prefers to go to the beach or out on the water and really doesn't think they'll make use of a pool at home. He works from the office but sometimes brings work home, needing "only a spot to park my laptop." In addition to swimming and surfing, he has an interest in the martial arts but thinks he can just stop at the gym if he wants on the way home from the office. Because it has to be a challenge to put in long hours at the office, plus overtime and home, and STILL maintain the active lifestyle he loves, he gets a small home office and a part of the work-out area upstairs dedicated to his martial arts equipment.

The Towlers like the traditional style of the house at 99 Landgraab that they managed to nab right after the shell was completed. They don't want it to stand out too much from its 1960's (?) modern style neighborhood, however. Their meager furnishings have arrived and are stored in the garage. They are mostly contemporary, which Matt says they like.

The other members of the household are Lani's two cats, Sukey and Lio. They couple be concentrating on their careers and there won't be time for a family for a while. They'd like the extra bedrooms to be appointed for expected frequent guests.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: The chosen inspiration object will be obvious as it's used frequently. Lani's dancing inspired the choice. Two other inspiration objects were also used in the build, only once each however.
Description included with the exchange upload: BnS 172 Fall Designer Showdown - Designed and decorated with Matt and Lani Towler in mind. The Towlers have recently moved to Sunset Valley from the islands. They're very much looking forward to living on the mainland and experiencing the changing seasons, but they don't want to leave their old life completely behind. The house includes an artist's studio, office, a work out area with dance bar and martial arts equipment. No third-party CC, some CAP.
    CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Yes.
CREDIT TO SIMMERS FOR CUSTOM CONTENT USED: No actual CC but does use 3 hidden stencils of wall art obtained from AnzSensei. They are all found in the guest bedrooms. There are a few CAP patterns used, the source of which I'm unable to identify.

just the 3 of the Morton Salt family:
    http://www.mediafire.com/download/gdar02zi4a4519w/The_Morton_Salt_Family.Sims3Pack
Morton Salt started his life as a professional surfer. Later he enlisted in the Navy and become obsessed with boats and ships. After having a son, Morty, with his now deceased (thank goodness), nagging ex-wife, Regina Irene Pinafore, Morton decided he needed a change. That was when he took up treasure hunting on the high seas. His wife was unimpressed and promptly divorced him. Morton, who preferred living any where his wife was not, was not phased by his divorce. Instead, he doubled his efforts to find sunken plunder and started tomb raiding as a side hobby. Ultimately, he proved his ex-wife wrong and made enough money to actually retire in his mid-fifties as a multi-millionaire. She died of frustration for not holding out for half of his new income. Not long after he retired, he was asked to host a treasure hunting series on SIMS 10, the Channel of Life. It was while hosting this series that he met Tyanna. She was working in the weather department as a secretary, and she was on the prowl for a rich man. She scooped Morton up and they had a whirl-wind affair. His son Morty had been married for nearly ten years by then and had twin girls. Morty was all for his father hooking up with a hot chick; his wife, Serena, saw through the sham and called Tyanna several choice names. The two women from then on have held harsh feelings each towards the other. When Serena and Morty announced the news that Morton was again to be a grandfather, Tyanna announced that she was also with child. Morton, being a gentleman (with questionable tastes), immediately married her. Thus Tyanna accomplished her life's goal and had time to start looking around for the next rich man to tie around her little finger. Soon after the two babies were born, a storm sent Morton's yacht, the Floating Mirage, to the bottom of the sea. With no where else to live, the were forced to move in with his son's family. Morty had recently purchased an old barn and was just beginning renovations to update it into a modern home for his family. Needless to say, there was a huge lack of room in the house, especially for the ladies. When Morton spied this new house for sale, he was only to glad to get out of hot water and into a new bed of his own with his wife! After all, as Morton says, "She may come across as cheap, but she is good at **edit**. And that is all that really matters. Oh, and she is a good cook, too."

Included in this three bedroom/three bath home is a laundry room, pantry with wine racks, fishing out of your back door, and a second family area upstairs!

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: The family I made for this one are Erika and Annalee Walker with their infant daughter Tranquility. Erika is an aspiring painter who encouraged by her loving wife Annalee to quit her job in the corporate world and chase after the arts full time while being a stay at home mom for Tranquility. Annalee is going to be a doctor, she wants to help people with that huge heart of hers, but she is also the practical one of the bunch and knows that the profession she has chosen will keep her away from her family sometimes.

This house had been built by Annalee's great-grandfather who immigrated from China. It had been passed to the eldest child ever since and her family gave it to her under the condition that she get married and get a good job. Boy were they surprised when she married a woman instead of a man, but the heart wants what the heart wants and in time Annalee's parents have come to love Erika like a daughter.

Hopefully I will have enough time and desire to live their actual sim lives for a while instead of writing their story in my head and will include a link if I make it before the deadline.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 30 X 30; 99 Landgraab Ave, Sunset Valley; Final Cost: 109,996
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Well I hope this will be obvious from the pictures, but my inspiration object was the folding screen. I wanted to create something that was very different from the shell while still following (Most) of the rules. I think I managed to mess up the fencing somewhere and also I'll admit to using walls to create the roof, but I feel like that could fall into a loophole because we were allowed to redraw the roof. Anyway I wanted this to feel sophisticated and clean, but also homey and livable at the same time. To that effect I tried to use the screens to make "rooms" or sections that could feel more intimate without cutting the space off completely from the other spaces. To me this is really what the screens mean, they are tall and wide enough to define a space, but also have holes that allows for the spaces to breathe together. Alright that's about it hope you enjoy.

Husband Don is a surgeon that wanted a sanctuary away from the doctor’s office where he can entertain & relax with his family. This home also has plenty of room for their two kids. Percy who takes after his father in being the little genius he is, has more than enough room to store his many beloved books. His sister Cloe has a bedroom that is the perfect teen girl hangout for that social butterfly to spread her wings.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 30x30, 99 Landgrab Ave, $109,924
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: The inspiration for this build came from the folding scree/room divider. The geometrical cutouts & sleek lines led me to create a modern home with a surprise around every corner. The bright color palette & bold furniture designs I used are reminiscent of a retro-mod design that I tried to keep throughout the home. With my design choices & use of the screens I hoped to create a home that is both functional & fun.

    Build-n-Share Challenge #173 - Searching for Hygge

Challenge Deadline: Thursday, December 31st Midnight CMT

It is a blustery, dreary day as you walk the few blocks to meet your next client for coffee. The sky is a depressing shade of gray, and the steady drizzle is making you shiver despite your best efforts at bundling up. The weather cannot dampen your high spirits, though. A couple of months ago, you were almost certainly closing your firm's doors for good and heading elsewhere in search of work. But the Sunset Valley community rallied to keep your tiny ship afloat.

You step into the small cafe, immediately wrapped in warmth and the aroma of hot beverages and freshly baked treats. Your stomach gives a tiny Pavlovian growl. The barista behind the counter is cheerful as she hands over your latte and a flaky, buttery croissant. Carefully, you weave your way among tables filled with chattering friends and students pouring over dog-eared tomes. There is an empty booth near the front window, its wood worn from years of use. You settle in, wrapping both hands around your warm mug, and watch the passersby on the sidewalk.

After a few minutes, a slender blonde woman enters the cafe, the doorbell tinkling in a gust of icy wind. Her eyes scan the room until they land on you. She makes her way to your table, graceful somehow despite the throng of patrons. “Hello!” she says with a lilting accent as she slides into the other side of the booth. “I am Elin Dahl. We spoke briefly yesterday on the phone.” Elin's fair skin is pink high on her cheekbones from the chill outside, her hair in a thick plait over the shoulder of her cream cable knit sweater.

“Yes, of course! My assistant, Rose, had business to tend to in Twinbrook yesterday,” you say. “It's so nice to put a face to the voice. You said you and your husband want to build a small home. What did you have in mind?”

“My husband, Nikolaj and I recently moved here from Denmark. We have traveled all over the world for several years for our jobs and have finally decided to settle here in Sunset Valley. It's just the two of us, so we'd really like something to feel like...'Hygge.'”

“I'm sorry. What is 'hooga' exactly? I'm not familiar with the term.”

Elin laughs a bit, her gray-blue eyes sparkling. “Oh, it is a Danish word that does not translate well into English. I suppose the closest word would be...coziness? Hygge is more of a feeling, an atmosphere. The winter nights in Denmark are long and dark. We spend a lot of time indoors, bundled up under blankets by the fire with warm drinks, good food, and lots of candlelight. Many things can be Hygge. A small dinner party with friends is Hygge. Sharing a bottle of nectar with a loved one is Hygge. This cafe is very Hyggelig.”

You nod, starting to understand this fascinating concept. “So a small, cozy home that feels like a hug. How many bedrooms and bathrooms will you need?”

“Two bedrooms and at least one bath. Maybe an extra for guests,” Elin says. “We need a dining area large enough for small dinner parties, but not overly large. Nikolaj is a freelance journalist and I am a photographer, so we need some sort of office space. It does not need to be a separate room, though. We love little nooks where we can tuck into a good book or read the paper. There must be a fireplace and comfortable seating. We would love to have the home completed in time to throw a New Year's party with our closest friends. Is that possible?”
Jotting a few final notes down, you say, “Start planning your party, Elin!”

    The Brief:

    small, cozy home
    20x20 lot
    $50K budget
    2 bedrooms
    1or 2 bathrooms
enough space for intimate dinner parties
    a fireplace
an office space or writing nook
    candlelight
    comfortable furniture
    fully landscaped
in the world of your choice

    Optional Challenge:

Make Elin and Nikolaj Dahl, and show them hosting their first Feast Party to mark the end of the year. Elin is a photographer who is artistic, friendly and has a photographer's eye. Nikolaj is a freelance journalist who is a bookworm, friendly and has a good sense of humor. They both love the outdoors and are eco-friendly.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 20x20, 14 Clover Drive in Dragon Valley, 47663 Simleons.
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I tried keeping Elin and Nikolaj's eco-friendliness in mind while building this. I did give them a trash compactor and a washer, but no dishwasher and no dryer. There's a clothesline at the front of the lot by the pine tree for drying the newly washed clothes. Also, there's no electrical light in the house. Every single room is filled with candles and candelabres. The stormlamps hanging outside by the frontdoor, the gardening area and the balcony all use candles. I have allowed for the minimal amout of electrical devices. There is a computer and an oldfashioned stereo with turntable in the living room. And of course, the washer, trash compactor and fridge. I made a parking spot under the balcony, for when Elin and Nikolaj has guests. There's plenty of room in the kitchen to set up a Christmas Tree if a Gifting party is hosted and there's good room for a Feast table at the wall opposite the dining table in the dining room.
In the enclosed gardening area there's also a sprinkler. And I left 3 perfect quality plants there, lettuce, grapevine and a tomato plant. I've hidden the outdoor trashcan in a tiny shack attached to the rear of the house.
I didn't add a lot of decor and clutter, since I figure Elin will be taking pictures or creating paintings to adorn the walls with. There's quite a few small plants throughout the house and no coffeetable, to leave room for Elin and Nikolaj having a slowdance to the sound of the old vinyl albums.
All appliances are upgraded to unbreakable. Those that already were got upgraded to selfcleaning where possible.
I did leave a little surprise (as I usually do) on a surface somewhere in the house. I hope the lovely couple enjoys it!
This build is without CC, CAP and spawners.

I also added a couple of sunrooms in case anyone wanted to feel immersed in nature without actually going outside. This build is fairly straightforward and the landscaping simple, but to me that was kind of the point. After all cozy and homey places aren't perfect. Build-n-Share Challenge #174 - Phoenix Rising

You open the package on your desk, carefully parting layers of snow-white tissue paper to find a framed copy of a feature article written about your firm and published in your beloved Dwell magazine. Nikolaj and Elin Dahl were so pleased with the job you did on their new home that they collaborated on the article, Nikolaj singing your praises and Elin showcasing some of your more recent builds in a full-color spread. Tucked inside is a small folded note card that reads, “Thank you for helping us find a little Hygge in a strange land. We are forever grateful. Wishing you the happiest of new years! Love, Elin and Nikolaj”

Rose startles you with a tap on your office door. “Your 10:30 is here already. She’s a little early. Should I send her in, or are you busy?”

“Oh!” you say, glancing at your watch. Nine-fifty-eight. She’s early indeed. “That’s fine, Rose. You can go ahead and send her in.” You hastily clear your desk, mentally picking out the perfect patch of wall upon which to hang your new gift.

A somewhat unkempt young woman enters your office, the proud jut of her chin at odds with her torn, stained jeans and tangle of chestnut hair. Are those bits of leaves in her hair? She sets down a worn knapsack and a tattered bed-roll before extending a red, wind-chapped hand to you. “I’m Tess. Tess...Barrett.” She says her last name hesitantly, and you wonder why for a moment when it hits you.

“Barrett? Any relation to Francis and Bitty Barrett of Bridgeport?” you say, thinking of the high society couple and their opulent waterfront villa just across the bay from downtown Bridgeport. At the mention of their names, the young woman’s eyes flash before she takes a deep breath.

“They are my parents. Or were.”

“Were? What happened, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“Well, as I’m sure you’re aware, my father is the head of the board at Sacred Spleen Memorial Hospital in Bridgeport. Ever since I was a little girl, he has groomed me to become a doctor like him, buying me medical textbooks and even a model skeleton for my 8th birthday in hopes that I would follow in his footsteps. Nevermind that I cannot stand the sight of blood. I have tried for years to make him understand that I will never be a doctor, but he just won’t listen. When I got my acceptance letter to the art school at Sims University, I hoped that he would finally let go and realize that I’m meant to be an artist rather than a surgeon. Instead, he went into a blind fury, declaring that the only way he would pay for my degree was if it was a medical degree. I pleaded with my mother to help me change his mind, but she was too busy with her bottles of expensive nectar to be of any use. So I told Francis in no uncertain terms would I ever go to medical school. And that’s when he disowned me.”

“Wow, I cannot…” you breathe, unable to complete the thought, mind reeling at this young woman’s story. “How long have you been on your own?”

“It’s been one year to the day since he threw me out with nothing but a backpack of clothes and the money I had in my wallet,” Tess says, her eyes flashing again.

“A year? Where have you been living since then?” you ask, flabbergasted.

“I haven’t really had a place of my own. I’ve slept on park benches, friends’ couches, and even in the library. I’ve showered and washed my clothes in the restroom at the community pool. I told myself I would spend a year trying to find ways to make money and save enough to buy myself a small place to live...maybe even finally go to college to earn my art degree. I have scraped together enough for a small home, and I’m hoping you can help me stretch every simoleon.”

“That’s just...incredible! Ms. Barrett, I would be honored to build your first home. My firm and I are very adept at using cost-saving techniques and maximizing our clients’ money. What is it that you’re looking for exactly?”

“I have already purchased a small 10x10 lot, so it’s going to be a tiny house. I need one bedroom, one bathroom, a functional kitchen/eating space, a living room, and somewhere to work on my art. I’m trying to build my portfolio to re-apply to Sims University in the fall, and maybe get a scholarship. Oh, and if there is any way to work in my own laundry area, that would be fantastic!”

“I can have it ready for you in one month’s time. Does that work for you?”

“It does. Thank you for your help. I will be in touch.” Tess shakes your hand again, hoists her meager belongings onto her back, and strides out of your office with her head held high.

    The Brief:
This is an unusual challenge to kick off the new year. You must make Tess Barrett (artistic, brave, charismatic, friendly, and frugal) and play her for up to a full Sim-year, not to exceed 40 in-game days. You must move Tess onto a 10x10 lot of your choice, in a world of your choice. It may be necessary to build a temporary structure in Edit Town to move her in, and then demolish it so the lot is empty again. Once she is moved onto her 10x10 empty lot, delete anything in her inventory, including her camera if you have WA. She should only have her high school diploma and her cell phone. Then, using the FamilyFunds cheat, set her household funds to $300. To do this, type CTRL-SHIFT-C and enter “testingcheatsenabled true” in the cheat box without the quotes. Then open the cheat box again and type “familyfunds barrett 300” without the quotes. Turn off testing cheats (testingcheatsenabled false). Then you have up to 40 Sim days to play Tess as a homeless sim, finding ways to fulfill her basic needs while making as much money as you can. You may not travel to university, the future, or a vacation world; Tess must live on the streets in whichever town you will be building her micro house. You may use sleeping bags and the tent in buydebug, or befriend other Sims so you can sleep over. You will have to be very creative. No cheating to raise her meters or artificially increase her relationships! Your budget is whatever you have managed to earn at the end of 40 Sim-days (or whenever you stop if you can’t play that long). Then, with that money, build her a micro house including:

-Budget is based on what you earn by playing Tess Barrett
-10x10 lot (this is free, does not come out of your budget)
    -one bedroom
    -one bathroom
    -kitchen/dining space
    -living room
    -art space
**bonus laundry room, if the budget allows

    Optional Challenge:
Show Tess throughout her year of living on the streets and tell us what she did to make it on her own. Did she get a part-time job? Did she save up for a guitar and play for tips in the subway? Did she dive in dumpsters? Let us know!

Challenge Deadline: Monday 29th Feb 2015 Midnight CMT

Tess Barrett is artistic, brave, charismatic, friendly, and frugal. She is a Sagittarius who loves the color green, electronica music, and autumn salad. She wants to be a Master of Arts. When her father insisted on her being a doctor, she left home to follow her dream.
Tess did everything she could to get money without actually getting a job. She collected flowers, rocks and gems, and insects. She scraped honey and beeswax from the beehives at Aleister's Elixirs & Sundries. She fished. She got her skills up so her paintings sold well. Tess's gardening produce got her money, too. She dived into piles of junk and sold whatever she found. Her boyfriend sent her gifts, as did store owners when her celebrity status got high enough. She took all the opportunities she could to make money.
At the end of her 38 day year (cut short due to pregnancy), she was a 4-star celebrity. Her painting skill was up to level 8, and her last painting sold for $734. After selling all her gifts and produce, etc, she had gathered up $119,783 to spend towards a new home and college.

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: After Tess was disowned by her father, she moved to Sunset Valley for a new start. She took up a part-time job working at a cemetery. She figured since she wouldn't actually be handling the bodies, it was a decent job that paid well enough to bring her closer to her dream. After getting a job she searched around town for facilities to use & discovered that the local gym not only had showers, but a kitchen, comfy lounge chairs by the pool & a pretty nice television in the main workout area. Through the year, Tess made extra money collecting & selling produce, honey, rocks & picking through garbage. Although it wasn't her favorite way to earn extra cash, she found herself dumpster diving quite a lot & salvaging treasures that many thought where trash, but to her, was a step closer to the life she'd always dreamed of having. She befriended a lonely widow, Agnes Crumplebottom & they became quite good friends. Sometime Agnes even let Tess spend the night. Tess finally decided that the drawing table she'd been using in the thrift store wasn't efficient enough to make real work, or she finally purchased an easel. On the morning of day forty, Tess had $53,719 to spend on her dream home & start her new life.
