Help with new laptop

«1
Hi. I got a new laptop today. Not the best for sims but better than my old one
http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/home/leaving?target=https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Leopard-079UK-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B01N1YANAG/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1506075628&sr=1-1&keywords=gtx+1050+laptop

Anyway, I've downloaded sims 3 & 4 on to it from Origin and my C drive is practically full. Does anyone have any ideas how I can free up some space. I didn't have this problem on my very old HP. I'm hopeless with computers and not sure what to do.

Thanks for any help.

I bet it's writing to the SSD... i hate SSDs... if so you'll want it to write to the HDD.

@igazor can you help I can't post links Thanks :)

@Lilia1971 Your ssd is too small to game on. You have to install the games on your second hard drive and redirect your documents folder to the second hard drive

I think it has gone there yes. Sorry but how do I change it & where do I put it? On my desktop it has one drive, c drive & d drive. I can’t find anywhere else to put it.

There is no reason to hate SSDs, not sure where that was coming from. In this case, though, the C drive is your SSD and it is meant for Windows and system related programs only, not games or to store data. The D drive is your HDD, that is much larger and where additional programs like games and game data belong. The reason this configuration is so popular currently is that SSDs are still very expensive (though slowly coming down in price). If this laptop had a larger C drive or if both drives were SSDs, then it would have driven the cost up considerably, by hundreds of pounds/dollars (etc.).

There are two parts to moving the game off of the C drive. One involves the program install. I would uninstall TS3, TS4, and Origin in their entirety, clean the registry using a tool such as the free version of Piriform's CCleaner, and reinstall everything on D. Where the game program files actually get installed should be a custom option in the beginning of any install program.
    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

In theory, I think Origin should be able redirect an already installed game from C to D but I don't know if this really works or is at all reliable and I may not be remembering this right. I don't currently have an Origin install to work with.

The other piece is the user game folder in Documents with your added content, EA store worlds, mods, game saves, etc. The best strategy here is to get Windows to redirect Documents in its entirety to the D drive, so then it doesn't matter what's inside because any call to data on Documents will automatically be reaching into D. There's a million illustrated web search hits on how to do this, here's the first one that comes up for me.

Thanks. I did look at changing the file in origin but it wouldn’t accept the d drive as it says it’s a dvd drive? I’m really sorry that I’m so dim with all of this. It would let me change to one drive but I don’t think games are supposed to be kept on there.

The laptop you had linked to has two internal drives, an SSD and an HDD. I was assuming the first one was C and the second one was D. Of course I can't really see from here which letters map onto which drives.

Something is wrong here. If you open up Computer, do you not see two hard drives (not counting OneDrive or the DVD)?

Either that or you linked us to the wrong computer model and you really only have one small drive.

I’ve just checked the link. It’s definitely the right laptop. I can’t see two hard drives though.

I’ve just looked again. There is a c drive a d drive and an e drive which is the dvd.

But when I try and change to that drive in origin it says the directory is invalid and to select a different one.

I think you first have to uninstall everything in order to reinstall it to D drive. Like igazor mentioned. Download CCleaner it's free. Uninstall origin , the sims 3 and 4. Use CCleaner to clean your computer registry of any leftover files left behind by the game. Than reinstall origin and direct the games to D drive

@rosemow can give you a link on how to then send your documents folder to D drive since I can't at the moment

Your very welcome. Even if you install everything to D drive. Your saves will go to documents on C drive so after the game install you also want to move the documents folder to D drive to keep as much space as you can on C drive for windows. 128 gb SSD can get used up very quickly

I uninstalled everything, ran cleaner but it still won’t accept the d drive. I have to go to bed as early start but if you have any advice I’ll check back tomorrow. Thanks.

I am wondering if there is some kind of windows 10 blockage. Igazor and i don't have windows 10 but @SimplyJen and @chesterbigbird do . Maybe something on windows 10 is blocking you installing to D drive. I know this game has issues with creator update and one drive

Sometimes it's as simple as the user has to create their own Program Files folder one time on D and then use that. It could be that the installer "thinks" the user is directing it to install the program on the Root (top) level directory of D, which should not really be possible.

Or it could be something Win 10 related, as said.

The video rosemow posted and the link igazor posted are correct. That's exactly how I did it. I am on Windows 10.

Have you made a folder within that drive first? something called Origin games or just games
After you have made the folder on that drive then direct origin to install in that location.
Also turn off your antivirus while doing so.
When you click on this pc and it brings up your drives how much space does it say D drive has? hopefully they have not shipped it with the wrong drives.

Thanks very much for the help. I've sorted it out now. Just got to cap my fps. Another daft question, does anyone know where the NVidia control panel is in windows 10 or do I have to download it?

    Click the spoiler tags. :)

Instructions for Nvidia Control Panel already installed on your computer if you have a Nvidia graphics card. Try this first...
    right-click desktop Nvidia Control Panel
    26767660101_141c4c169b_o.png
This method requires fullscreen mode in order to work.

If you already tried control panel and it didn't work, try Nvidia Inspector.
    Download & Install Nvidia Inspector

Look for the small tool icon or green symbol next to Driver Version. Click to launch Nvidia Profile Inspector.
    32116585614_b1a35cf00a_o.png
Select Profiles at the top and scroll through the long list to find Sims 3.
    32806054772_51f1b0bbec_o.png
Under Sync and Refresh, select Vertical Sync > Force On
In windowed mode you may have to add an additional setting. Frame Rate Limiter > 60 fps *This number should reflect your own refresh rate so be sure to double check what yours is.
Windows search > Display Settings > Advanced display settings > Display adapter properties > Monitor > (here you will see refresh rate for your screen)
    37397040374_1cb5f896b0_o.png
    Apply Changes top right corner.

Track track FPS in-game with the cheat fps on. Small text will appear in the corner and it should be capped at whatever your screens refresh rate is. Frame drops are normal but the goal is to not go over that number. Nvidia Inspector does not require fullscreen mode but if the frames aren't capping, you can try the additional setting under Sync and Refresh setting Frame Rate Limiter to whatever your screens refresh rate is.

Right. I have NVidia 1050 card. There is no control panel. GE Force is on my computer which relates to Nvidia but that has no control panel either. If I try to download I get a message saying I can only download from the store so I cant download the inspector or a control panel. I'm really stuck with this.
