The story behind Windenburg Heath:
Once upon a time in a land far away lived a young man and a young woman. They met it and it was love at first sight and true love at that — the kind that is never questioned and always acted upon very quickly. Much to the consternation of both their families, they married, built an enormous home on a bluff overlooking the ocean and proceeded to start a family.

Let me make this clear: no one ever doubted their devotion to each other. It was their sanity that was called into question. For while their hearts were pure and in each of their eyes the other was perfect, the differences between the two of them was as plain as black and white. Although in this case it was as plain as blue and green.

The young man, Verdé Green, came from a long line of Sims whose skin was the colour of emeralds shining in the light of a jeweler’s lamp. The Green family was well to do — akin to royalty in their part of the world. They had been living in Windenburg for as long as anyone could remember. No one knew how an entire clan of Sims began turning green but slowly over the course of generations, little green babies were born into the family. Were plant Sims hidden in the family tree? Aliens? Something in the water? At first everyone was taken aback but when you are as generous a family and as active in the community people tend to ignore certain differences that might otherwise draw attention. The Green family, as far as anyone had known, had taken these little green babies in their stride and raised them as any other child in the family — for greatness. And that is what each of them achieved. Now, all the members of the Green family were, well, green. And no one in the town gave it a second thought.

You might have guessed by now that Azure Bleue had a complexion the colour of sapphire gems. Her family had only been in Windenburg for a short time. When questioned about the tint of their skin they told everyone they were from the south of France and left it at that. The clan arrived in a parade of colourful Caravans and took up residence on the far side of the island. They kept to themselves and went much unnoticed by the townspeople until the moment when a young and impetus Azure Bleue left their encampment and literally fell at the feet of an equally young and impetus Verdé Green. As he reached to help her up the jade green eyes of Verdé met the indigo eyes of Azure. The rest is, as they say, history.

Soon after they were married and living in their house by the sea, Azure announced to Verdé that she was with child. As was the custom with her family she made arrangements to see a midwife who lived with her clan. The midwife, who was also a seer, laid her hands on Azure’s belly and announced that Azure was carrying a baby boy. After probing and massaging her belly a bit more, the midwife told Azure her son would be handsome, strong, kind and intelligent. Azure smiled to herself and began to fantasize about her son who would capture hearts and accomplish great things. Azure was so caught up in her reverie that she didn’t hear the midwife’s warning that tragedy was sure to follow.

Sometimes when you don’t know everything about someone love you are bound to find out something you’d rather not know. What the Green family wanted neither Azure or Verdé to know was the reason that Verdé Green’s family was green. It was a curse — cruel and complicated — and by falling in love and marrying, Verdé and Azure had unwittingly played a role in the downfall of both families.

Many years ago, when the first green baby was born to the Green family, the family searched for answers to why his skin was the colour of the leaves in Spring. They called for the town midwife, a seer with who’s skin was the colour of an aquamarine. She laid her hands on the happy, healthy green baby and told them that soon their baby would die. She said the green pigment of his skin was a result of the mother eating a morsel of an alien plant found only on the Windenburg meadows. The mixture of Sim DNA with the alien plant DNA had morphed into a child who would not live to see his fourth birthday. His death would be painful and his suffering long.

The midwife said there was one thing that might cure the child. “You must grow a perfect Pomegranate tree” she told the parents, “and feed him one seed of this perfect Pomegranate fruit each night until the Full Blue Fall Moon sets in the sky.”

“But there is one more thing” the midwife told them. Isn’t there always? “As payment for my services you must allow your son to grow up to marry my daughter. The child of their union will negate the influence of the alien plant’s DNA and no other children will be born with it’s affliction. If your child grows up to marry anyone else, that choice will bring upon the downfall of your family.”

The parents, who would have promised anything to save their only son agreed to the midwife’s terms. As part of the agreement, she was to move on to the family estate and become their master gardener. She would help them grow a perfect Pomegranate tree and have the fruit ready for the child to consume before the next Full Blue Fall Moon set in the sky. And so it went. The midwife grew a perfect fruit and by the time the Full Blue Fall Moon set, the child was strong and healthy. He grew into a good, kind man and his parents were very proud.

I wish I could say that he reached the age to marry and his parents fulfilled their obligation to the midwife who had remained with them until the time their children were to betrothed. But this is a tale of woe about a curse so you know that was not to be.

It had been years since the promise the parents made to keep their child alive and as the years went by the memories of that promise faded as had the agony of knowing their child was soon to die. Over that time, the father had made many poor choices with his fortune and the family was on the brink of financial ruin. If they fulfilled the promise made to the midwife and let their son marry her daughter — who by the way, was as smart and kind as she was beautiful — they were certain to lose everything. And losing everything was not something they wanted have happen.

Meanwhile, there was a wealthy family in town with an eligible daughter. The girl brought with her a sizable fortune and with that wealth, the Green family could continue on in the manner to which they were accustomed. Not wanting to make the midwife angry, the parents made arrangements for the couple to wed in secret. But you know how these things go. Soon, the midwife arrived at their door, demanding to know why the parents had gone against their promise. Nothing the parents had expected could prepare themselves for the midwife’s wrath.

“Your son will live to father many children” she told them. “But the alien DNA will be in all of them. The effects of the DNA will accumulate throughout the generations and one day all the children of all your family will be green. A young Green man will meet a young Bleue woman. They will fall in love and have a child. And everyone will all die — every living member of the Green family. Their deaths will be painful. The Green family will be no more.

Oh, and one more thing — the cure will still be the same: the seeds of a perfect Pomegranate tree eaten each night before the Full Blue Fall Moon sets. But the only place to grow that perfect Pomegranate will be here on this land. If you try and take the fruit off this property it will turn to dust. So you must live on this land for the rest of your days and that of your family’s for all eternity. If you leave this place your ancestors will never again be able to access the cure.”

The thing about the midwife’s curse was that it wasn’t immediate. All the parents cared about was that their son had married and they had regained their fortune. If some of their ancestors generations down the line were to turn green and die a painful death, well, they wouldn’t be around to know or care. They laughed in the midwife’s face, packed their things and went off to live with their son on the estate he shared with his new bride. And sadly, they all lived out the rest of their lives happily ever after. They never mentioned the curse to anyone in the family, not their son or his wife and certainly not to the many green Green children who were born thinking their skin colour was merely a recessive gene.

As for the midwife, she and her daughter spent the rest of their days tending the old garden, growing perfect Pomegranates amidst the rest of the perfect fruit and flowers on the property on the bluff overlooking the sea. When she and her daughter died the land lay untouched for centuries.

The garden was the reason that Azure and Verdé chose it as the spot to build their home. I don’t even think he knew the land had been in his family generations before. But Azure’s eyes lit up the moment she saw the view. And then she saw the garden. She begged Verdé to rebuild the mansion that had fallen into disrepair and he did and they both settled in to living happily ever after.

Azure grew round and ripe with child and as predicted had her beautiful son. When he was a toddler Verdé took the child with him on a journey to see his family who had not yet met the boy. Azure stayed behind to tend the garden and rest. She was again with child and the thought of traveling was more than she could bear. It was then that both Verdé and her son fell mysteriously ill. They were at death’s door when she received the news. Azure ran to the midwife to ask for help as no one else could find a cure. Both Verdé and her son seemed doomed to die a horrible and painful death.

The story of the curse of the Green family was known to the midwife. It had been passed down through generations of seers but never shared with anyone else. When Azure heard the terrible tale she ran to the garden to pick a perfect Pomegranate fruit. If she could only get it to her family in time. She packed her things and saddled her fastest horse. The moment she crossed the border of their property, the Pomegranate in her bag turned to dust. There was nothing she could do. As she headed down the road towards her family in their time of need she was met by messengers carrying the news that it was already too late.

Azure had the bodies of her family brought home and she buried them overlooking the sea. Then one morning she went into the garden, laid down by the perfect Pomegranate tree and took her own life. She is buried with Verdé and her son on the bluff that she loved so much overlooking the sea.

As for the rest of the Green family, they all died slow and painful deaths. All except for one. Her name was Cyan Blue. Before he died, Cyan’s father had their name changed from Green to try and stave off the family curse. For some reason, with Cyan, it seemed to be working. There was something a bit different about her. Instead of being Emerald green as the rest of her family had become, her skin was a deep teal blue. Her eyes were teal blue as well. Even as a young child she had a sixth sense about her when it came to other Sims. She could look into their eyes and see things, often things she didn’t want to tell. It was this sixth sense that kept her alone and with the need to explore and travel, never settling down in one place; always on the move. Why this one Sim was still alive while the rest of her family had been taken by the curse was a mystery to everyone. It was especially surprising to the people of Windenburg when she showed up in town searching for the legend of the Green family home on the bluff.

Not many of the locals even remembered where the Estate had stood. The only possible spot was so covered in thorns and brambles that no one had ever bothered to set foot past the remnants of the old stone wall that surrounded it. Rumours and fairy tales had scared even the bravest of Sims. What lay behind the thicket was a mystery to everyone on the island.
The minute Cyan laid eyes on the site she knew she was home. She slowly and carefully made her way through the thorns that barred entrance for all others but that seemed to soften as they brushed against her skin. She was deep into the thicket when the branches and bramble gave way and she found herself in a clearing. In front of her was an elegantly curved driveway. She could imagine elegant carriages pulled by teams of horses making their way towards what must have been an elegant and extremely large house but now was rubble and ruin. The view from the clearing towards the sea took her breath away. And then she saw the garden.

While the rest of the property was completely a wreck beyond a few walls and the foundation of the house, the garden was still pristine. How could that be if no one had set foot on the property for centuries? Cyan walked through the garden gate and meandered on the path around the flower beds. Not a single weed to be seen. Every plant, tree and flower was perfect and growing strong as if someone had been caring for it every single day for the past hundred years.

In Cyan’s mind’s eye she could see what had to be done. She set up camp in the furthest corner of the property overlooking the sea and began the work of opening up the old Estate and making it a place where Sims could come from all over Windenburg to take advantage of its wild beauty.

The fruits of her labour are what you see before you today. Cyan had the help of many in the Windenburg community who were happy to contribute their time and talent to the reclaimation of the old Estate. She rewards them by allowing everyone to come and go as they please. They can partake of the goodness of the land and the garden but can take nothing out the park, not a fruit or a flower, as it all turns to dust.

Cyan is an elder now and lives happily in her little tent on the Heath. While many come to visit and enjoy Windenburg Heath, as it’s known today, no one stays for long except for Cyan. Maybe that’s why she’s the only one who see the ghosts who come to tend the garden in the night: Azure, Verdé and their son under the guidance of two mysterious women with skin like light blue jewels glowing in the night.
