Which graphic style do you prefer Sims 3 or 4?

@LunaNova Oh, photoshopping is an art in itself and especially for stories and screenshot presentations an upgrade (I only sharpen my Sims 3 pictures a bit now because it takes so much time; which Photoshop program do you use for that?). Found the mod, when I get home I'll install it and see if I like it in my game, thanks.

@Namaya92 Lol, yes, it does, though I must say I'm actually fine with Sims 4 hair somehow (even when I understand the complaint about clay). Prefer it to the CC styles I sometimes see for the game that imo often don't quite fit the art style.

@JoAnne65 I use photoshop CC 2017! I own a copy because of some of the stuff I do IRL for work so its brought me more into editing sims stuff and creating custom content. I create custom actions to speed up editing and batch edit 50 photos at a time going back and tweaking important ones. Though I used GIMP 2 for the longest time.

@LunaNova Thanks  (I use Adobe and PicMonkey for sharpening, but I have a feeling those are not perfect)

I have to say I prefer TS3 object styles hands down. The TS4 style looks like Playskool doll house furniture. Plus all of the color shades are just slightly mismatched so it looks horrible when you try and mix sets. And the over-sized objects are just not funny with lots as small as they are.

I would prefer TS4 sims if you could get rid of that vapid smile and have a normal expression. I don't mind the slightly more cartoon-y faces and hair. As it stands, I prefer TS3 sims for their more realistic facial expressions.

@LunaNova, Oh...please don't get me started on Adobe's subscription process. As a photographer...it drove me absolutely insane...that they went to that avenue. Yes, it opens up Adobe's higher end Photoshop to more users, but as a troglodyte who likes his Photoshop to be purchased and not have to worry about paying for a subscription every stinking month, it's like pulling teeth for me. Just give me the darned option to pay $1700 and be done with it, then I don't have to worry about my photos being locked up in the Cloud.

As of now, I use Adobe Lightroom for my pro-photos (I do landscapes and wildlife)...which is what I do when I'm not being addicted to Sims (3) If Lightroom forces me to go subscription. I'm going to On1. Sorry, Adobe.

This sums more less what I do hate about TS4 graphic/art style, the hair. Look how this banks look in comparision to fine eyebrow. Its just not even funny. Aside open world, paterns, wheel of color, detailed enviorment, breezy felling etc TS 4 art style is just so lame for me on so many levels I can't even start. The eyes.. just why? the mounth, all the same... Screenshots from final product The Sims 4 look good to me too, but as a oversaturated concept sketchs.

@LunaNova Love the colour of the sunset on the original, but much prefer the sharpened town and overal picture on the edited one. I'm curious by the way, is that purely the mod (do you see this in game) or do you edit the pictures afterwards when you write your story? If it's a mod I'd love to have the link?

I'm not over the moon where it comes to scenery in the game I must confess (expecially when it's backdrop). It looks a bit flat to me. What I do find much better, is the lighting on sims when they are not directly catching light, for example at night.

    qhdpe1i.png

They clearly improved that in comparison to Sims 3.

Her hair looks like octopus tentacles though :'D

The hair from TS4 as well as the Sims reminds me of a lump of clay that someone took to sculpt the Sims with. I hope no one takes offense to that comment as that is what I see when I see TS4 Sims. And so for me, that's a big turn-off for me when it comes to TS4. The Sims 3 hair looks better to me than TS4 hair.

We sure can go to those locations in TS3 unlike the fake backdrops in TS4 that just sits there and doesn't do anything for game play in my opinion. At least we can take a boat out to that little island that has the lighthouse in the 4th picture and walk around the grounds of that island as it's not a fake backdrop. You can't do that in TS4 as you are limited to where a sim can go to. I don't want my Sims to be boxed in a world and not be able to go to explore the island lighthouse or any island that may be either in a huge lake or around the world.

Can't cope with the hair in 4 :(

@LunaNova @JoAnne65 @Namaya92 if only a few more of us could accept the right we all have to love different iterations for different reasons. I don't love 4, I did try, not once but twice. That doesn't stop me from admiring those who do enjoy 4 and can get the very best out of it. Your pictures @LunaNova are a prime example of that. Both @JoAnne65 and @namaya's images are just as beautiful. So I think we have some very talented artists both sides of the fence and that is a cause for celebration. I hope if and when a TS5 is announced all these talented people are still around and ready to voice their opinion. That way we might be able to influence the graphics still of the future. Then I can go back to just playing and building.

I have enjoyed this discussion and the pictures very much. Too much of a good thing isn't good for me though. I hope the discussion continues in this amicable fashion and there are more pics posted. Now I must go back to trying to link a bridge to a road which has occupied me all afternoon and is driving me bananas. But I love it <3

If you see this island in TS4, can you go right over to that island and explore the island? Probably not as it's just a fake backdrop.
    lr7s0vF.jpg
This island has no lots to it. It's an island that the TS3 creators created so that we can take our Sims over to it to explore around on it and collect bugs, flowers or whatever spawners that the creators had placed over there and not just look at a backdrop wondering what could be over on that island. In TS3, we can travel over land that doesn't have lots on them unlike TS4 where the players Sims teleport from one lot to another lot in a blink of the eye.

Or if I was standing on the far bank of this lake and saw this abandoned house from over there, I can either swim across or run around the lake and stand right next to this house and walk around the outside of it. Can you do that in TS4?

This thread has quickly turned from "Which art style do you prefer" to "which game is stylistically better" lol
I really think both games have their virtue stylistically speaking. It really comes down to preference. Cartoony or more realistic?
Truthfully, Sims 4 has better graphics. The lighting, the softeness, the animations etc. But it has that art style that does not please everybody. I have to agree about the plastic/play-doh aspect, but I don't dislike it at all.
Sims 4 is a more advanced game so it makes sense. If Sims 3 had been made in 2014 or more, it would look absolutely fantastic with its style.
I don't agree that Sims 4 didn't improve or made advancement, it just did a different route. Cartoon style does not equate step back. Realistic does not mean better either.

So yeah while I do like the cartoon style of sims 4 , sims 3 is overall a better game and I like the realistic a tad more. If there is ever a TS5, I really don't care what art style they choose, as long the content and gameplay can beat Sims 3 and the graphics are as good or better than sims 4.

Where are the backdrops in 3? Oh you mean the world edge? Of course that's a backdrop, the world has to end somewhere. But everything in between is free game. You can go anywhere. You just can't say that about 4, it's far from the truth.

@Nikkei_Simmer, yes those are raindrops in the water. It's one of the reasons why I love this game so much as seasons is one of my favorite EP's. I got so bored with the weather being the same before Seasons came out. Before Seasons came out, I would play a game for a little bit and then pick back up on it when one of the holidays would come around such as Halloween and decorate my Sims house with the free Halloween store items so that it can feel somewhat like Halloween in the game. And then I would I stop playing it until Christmas comes around and then do the decorating all over again with the free Christmas items from the store. I have even used the fog emitter that I believe came with Ambitions and set it to look like it was snowing in my game even when the sun was out just to make it feel like it was winter in the game.

Every game has backdrops. And now, you are no longer talking about the graphic style of the game. You are talking about worlds.

You clearly didn't read what I said about backdrops. EVERY GAME HAS THEM. Sims 3 has them. Sims 4 has them. Sims 2 has them. Sims 1 has them. Let me make this clear: There is nothing wrong with having backdrops in a game because every game has them. And I don't get the problem with "fake" backdrops. All backdrops are fake.

they're nice pics but i like sims 4 better xD
I like he can go to all those places with his sims if he wants to :p

We sure can go to those locations in TS3 unlike the fake backdrops in TS4 that just sits there and doesn't do anything for game play in my opinion. At least we can take a boat out to that little island that has the lighthouse in the 4th picture and walk around the grounds of that island as it's not a fake backdrop. You can't do that in TS4 as you are limited to where a sim can go to. I don't want my Sims to be boxed in a world and not be able to go to explore the island lighthouse or any island that may be either in a huge lake or around the world.

every game has backdrops that you cannot visit. there is no such thing as a game without backdrops lol
Not across the bridge though ;) In Sims 3 backdrop is horizon.

Graphics and art style are often confused. One thing's for sure: Sims 4 is not an advanced game in comparison to Sims 3 and even 2 when you put graphics aside. I haven't seen anyone yet who doesn't acknowledge Sims 2 in many ways has the superior animations in the franchise. The different route in many respects has been removing things and taking short cuts. The lighting indoors in the beginning was drama by the way. They fortunately improved that (and shadows falling through windows is beautiful) but it took them quite some time. Lighting outside is good, but why do shadows move in little shocks during the day when they had that totally under control in Sims 3?

This has nothing to do with art style though. That indeed is a different subject. But I think one can objectively point out issues with the art style as well. The way they have made features and characteristics of faces inferior to facial expressions is very poorly done and it's got nothing to do with cartoony. And someone mentioned the slouching postures. I have no idea why they did that, it's highly unattractive. It only suits Gaston Lagaffe.

Oh my god I died at that fruit bowl xD No way, I had never seen that.
I agree Sims 2 had the best animations. Sims 3 was lack luster in that department so Sims 4 improved in that department.
I don't know, I don't minde the slouching? And the gimmicky wacky faces and expressions. And the plastic hair. I like them, I know it was made on purpose and not for lack of ressources or skill. I know they meant for it to look a certain way and it works for me. Maybe because I was not expecting Sims 4 to look exactly like Sims 3. I was happy with the stylistic change.
And the game runs better and has a smoother look for sure.
Now that doesn't mean I think it's a better game. It's not (in my very objective opinion) and I think that almost a lot agree with me. Sims 3 is superior in a lot of ways, but I don't know if graphic style is one of them. I personally prefer it though.

But we should do like, a comparison post of pictures from TS3 and TS4; of the same objects or the same sims (as much as possible) in the same angle and similar lighting? And pics in both max settings and lowest settings on both games to really see the differences.
