Explanation on why Windows Vista/7/8.1/10 users can't play The Sims

If you can't play The Sims on Windows 10, it's due to Windows 10 not supporting SafeDisc games. Also if you have Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.1, Microsoft has released KB3086255 which blocks SafeDisc games, including The Sims, from running. If you are running these versions of Windows and you have the update installed, you will not be able to play The Sims without workarounds, uninstalling the KB3086255 update, and/or enabling the SafeDisc driver.

Also please note that this isn't the first time that Microsoft broke video games. Users of Windows 7 may remember this update known as KB2670838. This update caused some DX10 games such as Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, and BioShock 2 to crash. You had to remove the update and/or uninstall IE 10/11 to fix the crash problem.

I hope this thread helped you explain why The Sims doesn't work.

The Sims does work on Windows 8.1 but this depends if your computer has this update or not. Since not everyone may have the updates, some with Windows 8 can run the game but others with Windows 8 may not. The only way to check if you have the update is if the SafeDisc game (such as The Sims, Age of Empire II, SimCity 4, etc.) either starts or displays an error message. If the game displays an error message or doesn't do anything, you have the update installed.
