Den of Vice & Iniquity Building Competition

Winners Announced!!

For details of the winners please see the post on page 10 :)

For a long time now I have wanted to play a Sim with a few vices, a criminal type who hangs out in dive bars and gambling houses and that is what I hope to do in my Legacy story with a future heir ... but before I do they need somewhere to hang out, plot dastardly deeds, drink illicit nectar and profit from the gambling machines!

And, because I love seeing how creative and imaginative this community is, I thought I would run a little competition to find something really special to add to my game. So here we are; a build competition!

Deadline for Entries
Completed entries should be submitted by 11pm GMT (UK time) on Tuesday 6th December 2016 (10am 7 Dec [(AEDT], 1am 7 Dec [SAST], 6pm [EST], 3pm [PST] )

What Am I looking For?
What my Sim needs is a 'down-at-heel, scruffy, seedy sort of place that would combine the vices of drinking and gambling. Something like an old prohibition era "speakeasy" perhaps?

I'm not looking for somewhere swish, sophisticated, or glamorous, it should be the sort of place an honest, upright, citizen would prefer not to go to. It would be a haunt for the 'down on their luck', the petty criminal, a place that might be run by gangsters to rake in money from the bar, the slot machines, the roulette or poker tables, a smoke-filled dive that might be occasionally raided by the police (when they're not taking back-handers from the owner!)

Size and Style?
Small to medium is what I'm looking for, certainly no more than 40x40 but if you could fit it all in somewhere smaller that would be great.

The lot will be used in Hidden Springs so it should generally fit with the look of that world, so nothing too glitzy or colourful or futuristic or "olde worlde".

Most importantly it must be playable, it is probably good to not cram in lots of items to make sure Sims have room to move around and socialise when I use it for video story telling.

Where will the Lot be Placed?
To be honest, I had no specific location in mind, I was thinking I would place it where-ever it fits best. :)

However, if you would prefer to build something to fit a specific lot in Hidden Springs, these are some locations that could be used:

Content That Must Be Included?
The bare minimum is a bar and some gambling options.

If you don't have the Late Night EP use a juice bar and I can replace it with a LN bar when I place it in game.

A couple of slot machines should be placed and also at least one 'casino' table, roulette, blackjack or poker, or all three :)

Some Optional Extras?
I'm thinking a music stage would work in this sort of venue as well. You can imagine a jazz pianist tinkling the ivories in a smoke-filled room while some patrons are drowning their sorrows at the bar and others are hoping their luck will change at the gaming table ...

Some bar sports might be a nice touch, a pool table or darts, even a domino table perhaps?

What EP, SP or Store Content Can I Use?
Pretty much everything!

I 'own the Store' and have all the Expansions and Stuff packs except for a few of the 'special edition' or 'pre-order' items for some of them (like the Pets EP and Into The Future specials).

What Should I Not Use?
No Custom Content please.

The Competition Rules
This competition is open to all Sims 3 builders. I am not looking for the craziest, most complex, or content-packed lot, simply the build that works best in game play and looks like the sort of seedy den that my Sim would hang out in.

There is a "first prize" which will be awarded to the lot that I think will best suit my 'bad/evil' Sim:
  • A short video walk-through of their lot hosted on my Youtube channel
  • Featuring in my legacy story Lets Play videos (when my Sim comes of age and starts to turn bad ...)
  • Up to 3500sp worth of gifts from your wishlist or a Store World*

A runner-up entry will win:
  • A short video walk-through of their lot hosted on my Youtube channel
  • Up to 1000sp worth of gifts from your wishlist*

All other entrants will win:
  • A short video walk-through of their lot hosted on my Youtube channel
  • Up to 500sp worth of gifts from your wishlist*

* If you already own the Store, you can nominate a single other Simmer to receive your Simpoints prize.

Entering The Competition
To enter please post:
  • Your name
  • The name of your lot
  • A description of the features of the venue - highlighting the main content used
  • Some photos of the lot (no more than five images per post please)
  • A Download Link (preferably on the Exchange, or ModTheSims, or Mediafire)

Entries must be submitted before 11pm GMT (UK time) on Tuesday 6th December 2016 (10am 7 Dec (AEDT), 1am 7 Dec (SAST), 6pm (EST), 3pm (PST) - although this may change and slip to the end of the year. :)

Winners and Prizes

I hope to decide on a winner before Xmas but if there are a lot of entries it may take a little longer!

I will post the list of winners as soon as I have decided the two main prize winners and will upload the video walk-throughs as quickly as I can thereafter.

FAQ
1. I'm not an experienced builder do I stand a chance?
Yes! What I am looking for are an imaginative design and a playable venue that meets the 'seedy den' theme, it doesn't need to be showy or complex.

2. I don't own the Casino set ...
Don't worry, you do not need to own the Casino set to enter this competition, obviously it can give you a few more options for your build but there are quite a few other options you can use.

Casino tables are important for this venue but if they are the only thing you are missing, I will consider builds that have been designed so that they can be easily added.

To help you, here are some Store sets that include gambling/casino content:
Those are the 'obvious' ones but I know that Sims builders love to use items in unexpected ways to create something special so, for example some content from the Man Cave Compilation might be appropriate, perhaps Loud, Fast, Clash! – Bedroom + Attire, maybe even Le Cirque Celebration!

But, don't let me constrain you, at the end of the day it's mostly about the 'feel' of a place, a seedy, underworld kinda place that would feel at home with criminality ... and I know that there is plenty of creativity in the community that can make something truly special. :)

3. Can I nominate someone else for my prize?
You can, I will sort out which wishlist you want me to gift from when the winners list is announced - don't nominate before then as there are plenty of Simmers here who love to make wishlists disappear as soon they are found! :)

4. Can I submit more than one build?
Yes. If you are overflowing with ideas I am happy to consider as many new builds as you have time and inspiration to create. However, only one build will win a prize, a single prize of 3500sp, 1000sp or 500sp will be awarded per person.

5. What is the deadline for entries?
At the moment the deadline for entries is 11pm GMT (UK time) on Tuesday 6th December 2016 although this may change if there are a number of entries that need a little extra time. To be honest, and if you have watched any of my Lets Play videos, you will know that I am not a fast player so it will likely be a while before I need to use the venue in my story. :)

I know there are many awesome builders in this community so I am really excited to host this competition and I hope I will be able to pick a winner!

If you like to hear me waffling on at great length about this competition ...

    Name: @SjappielovePaul
Name of Lot: Sally's Motel (7 Diopside Lane)
    Description of the Venue
Sally started her motel a long time ago. Since then less tourists stopped by in town and her motel got less attention. She left it and some shady types took their business into the motel. Now it's a place a lot of people won't come anymore.

    Name: @Goulsquash
Name of Lot: Hidden Mountain Resort
    Description of the Venue
After the disappearance of the owner, the Hidden Mountain Resort fell into disrepair, and eventually closed it's doors. While the restaurant portion remains open, many nosy residents believe there is more to the old hotel than meets the eye.

Name of Lot: Llama Lounge (11 Diopside Lane)
    Description of the Venue
Lars Disco-tech did NOT fit in. So, out it went. It was replaced with the Blue Llama, which played a lot of Blues in its day and is singing the blues now. Most of its customers sing the blues too when they lose at the tables or slots. Oh well, its a place to get a drink and waste some time.

    Name: @aricarai
    Name of Lot: Seedy Joe's
    Description of the Venue
Before downtown was built, Joe's was the hotspot that everyone ventured to. Anyone that was anyone was seen at Joe's on any given night. Friends would become merry over a pint and watch the sport on TV and patrons would quietly sit near the dance floor watching the pianist tickle the ivories, while the blues singer crooned into the night. Joe's was the best place in town for a night out. As downtown developed and more people moved closer to it, a series of events turned Joe's into Seedy Joe's - ownership changed, the crowd got rougher and then there was the boxcar incident which no one speaks about anymore. Now, only the dregs of society would dare to set foot in Seedy Joe's. The dive bar caters to the devious, mischievous, hardknocks, and the ones down on their luck. Known for its bar brawls, loud and boozy chatter, and grungy décor, only brave people would venture into Seedy Joe's if not a regular.

    Name: @Kgaff
Name of the Lot: Order of the Llama Lodge 101 (11 Diopside Lane)
    Description of the Venue:
At one time this was the magnificent Llama Lodge building. The membership was a veritable "Who's who" of Hidden Springs. It was the place to meet for drinks and celebrate special occasions in the upstairs banquet room.
Now, most of the members of the lodge have left town or merely died off. Now the lodge is nothing more than a dark, rundown dive bar. Termites are slowly working their way through the place. The banquet room now houses an unlevel pool talble, a couple of slot machines and an old photo booth.
Downstairs you can sit at the bar and listen to the piano player fight to be heard over the radio. If you want to, try your luck at the gambling table.

    Name: @MiaSkywalker
Name of the Lot: The Forgotten Barrel (22 Subalpine Circle)
    Description of the Venue:
Once a favorite hangout and dance hall for many of the locals, the place changed hands several times after the death of the first owner. It has gradually fallen into decay and disrepair. The current owner is believed to have ties to criminal elements, and has changed the downstairs area from a small dance hall to a gambling den. Sims feeling down and out often come there, hoping to win big... and often losing even bigger. The owner offers loans, at a rate that is just as deadly as the gambling tables themselves. It is a good place to lose a few Simoleons, but if you aren't careful, you may lose even more than that.

    Name: @ZeeGee
Name of the Lot: The Alibi (9 Azure Lake Ave)
    Description of the Venue:
It may look like an abandoned warehouse but The Alibi is THE place to see and be seen by criminals, or mainly BE SEEN when you're actually somewhere else committing a crime. If you need an alibi, everyone in this joint will swear you were there all night and never left.. It's also rumored that the big bosses hang out in a 'secret' basement. Step in and have a look around during opening hours...if you dare!

    Name: @Jude525
Name of the Lot: Shoots and Scores
    Description of the Venue:
Keeping to its roots in Prohibition, Shoots and Scores still runs illicit gaming in the exclusive basement, while running a *legitimate* sports bar as a cover. But even the customers watching the game upstairs can put a bet on the spread if they know who to ask.

    Name: @annasommer
Name of Lot: Barry´s Music Den
    Description of the Venue:
Said Barry used to run the place as a fast food diner, calling it a "bar and grill". Sadly the cook ran off with the waitress, so he desperately needed a change of plan... and decided to try his hand at something else. On the ground floor, the bar and the music stage any struggling band might want to rent for a gig... upstairs, another type of entertainment. Slot machines, darts and billiard tables for the simple taste on the first floor, and for those who like it a little more posh, some Poker and Black Jack on the second.

Yes, I know, I should have created an extra post for the winners, but I forgot. :(

    Winners Announced!!

I have finally come to a decision! I really have to say that you guys made it incredibly difficult!

Each and every lot had something (or, indeed, many things) that were just perfect. From really seedy interiors, to broken exteriors, seedy bars and gangster offices. Some simple, small and perfectly formed, some larger and full of everything I could want; amazing designs and ideas were EVERYWHERE - it was SO DIFFICULT to choose a winner!

My final criteria was that the lot would be a place one of my future Sims would hang out and get drawn to the wrong side of the tracks. So, with that in mind I picked the lot that I think will best work for my legacy story ...

    The WINNER is ...

Hidden Mountain Resort created by @Goulsquash
    Download Link: http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=9001474

Everything just works in this lot. Great weathered exterior and good use of boarded up windows and, especially, where there used to be doors. Lovely old little coffee shop and the "hidden" entrance (through the toilet!) to the bar and casino area. The 'faded elegance' of the décor, especially in the bar. The bosses room, and interrogation equipment is simple but very effectively set up, especially with the addition VIP rope and bouncer. Easily placeable and eminently playable.

I will not be using the lot in my Lets Play for a little while yet, but until then, please enjoy this video presentation:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foEehFHzhJE

    Second Place ...

    Sally's Motel created by @SjappielovePaul
    Download Link: http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=9000509

Another example of good "weathering" on exterior and disused bits & pieces. Really nice bar and restaurant layout, and the addition of the two motel rooms is a brilliant touch. The use of pink and red lighting effects adds a really nice 'seedy' feel to the place. Hiding the casino and dancing rooms, along with the distillery rooms is very nicely done (although there are a couple of play issues with the sliding bookcases). Like all the builds there were some nice individual decoration choices, as bizarre as it sounds, in this one I particularly liked the separators for the urinals!!

If you have not explored this lot in your own game please enjoy this video presentation:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeDY5UoQ0ww

I will add my comments for all the other builds over the next few days, along with the walk-through videos.

    PRIZES!!

There has been a small change to the prize values I can award for this competion ...

The winner can select any Store world (i.e. non-cash) or any other wishlist items up to a total value of 3500sp!

Second placed can now select any wishlist items up to a total value of 1500sp!

All other entrants can select wishlist items up to a total value of 750sp

If you would like any specific items just let me know, or if you wish to nominate another Simmer to receive your prize, just send me their TS3 userid.

Once again, thank you all so much for taking part, creating such amazing lots ... and giving me such a headache!! :)

Oh I hope my game allows me to do this! The theme is so exciting! I've never done anything like this before but the second I read this I got ideas flowing.

What an interesting contest! I don't really have time to do it, and I also have no ideas for dive bars, but I look forward to seeing what you get. :)

this sounds like a great idea! lol reminded of one of my fav sims Isiais Evil. bet she would love a place like this, when she ages up . ;)
not sure if I will have time to participate but will definitely be lurking.

edit to add: since you know what town your using, if you have an idea of which lot in town, or what side of the town it will be placed in . it would be good to mention. it would help the build blend in.

    Hi, thank you :)

That is a good question! I hadn't actually thought about exactly where it might be placed - I am very lazy/random/reckless when it comes to placing new builds in a world! :(

But, you're right, so I will take a look when I'm next in game and put up a few likely locations.

Great theme for a building contest. I will advertise this on the DD thread.

Hmm, I may watch a few gangster movies and load up Hidden Springs.

Thank you, again, for the question. I have updated the first post with some location ideas.
if you would prefer to build something to fit a specific lot in Hidden Springs, these are some locations that could be used:
    • 9 Azure Lake Ave - 40x30
    • 7 Diopside Lane (currently The Enchanted Grill) - 24x40
    • 11 Diopside Lane (currently Lars Disco-tech) - 25x22

Nice, that's an interesting frontage. Great choice of doors and I like the musical signs on the walls. I'm not a habitué of "vice dens" but in my mind the "seediness" starts once you're inside, the outside could be quite respectable ... :sunglasses:

Gotta get my new system up and running so I can install all my EPs to work from, then I'll get started. Won't have any gambling machines till they come up on DD in a couple weeks, but the building should be shaping up by then.

@ciane place a broken down car in the parking lot, put a cockroach spawner around the dumpster, and have a sim kick some trash around and you got seedy! lol

A simple way for it to look seedy would be to use a weatherbeaten wood look for the doors, and maybe use one or two of those broken windows that come with the Now and Then manor. For the bricks you could also use the dirty bricks that come with the Amore set, and just change the pattern or color. (At least, I think that would work. I think the grunge is an overlay, which is independent of the pattern you select.)

It's true that your landscaping is a bit nice. :) Maybe replace it with some kind of swamp stuff or trash?

And as Adrian said, you can always make the inside seedier than the outside, and then whatever the outside is, it fools people until they go inside. :)

This really sounds like a fun competition, I want to focus on the fall exchange first but after I might give it a try!

I really think you should continue that build @ciane and I agree with everybody else. The doors and the landscaping will make it look different if you experiment a bit with other looks and patterns.
