Sims 4 (Graphics and computer performance)

«1
I know this has probably been brought up before but I was wondering if someone could help me since my computers kinda broken and I'd like someone to explain something to me.

(Also I know this has probably been referred to, but hear me out)

My computer has always had issues (since I first got it) it may run a game really well but then it runs a game to me which seems to be simpler slower etc.

With The Sims 4 I used to play with Ultra settings, it always ran fine, however it would sometimes black screen, I was led to believe this was an issue with the motherboard however.

But anyway, I later because the black screening still worried me decided to tune down my settings to laptop mode and my lighting to simply "high".

Later I got my graphics card "fixed", a friend of mine gave me a new one of the same kind.

So I started playing the Sims 4 again, I ran it in laptop mode again, of course the visuals are kinda worse, so I tried running the game back to ultra without laptop mode and with lighting on high simply. The game made my computer make lots of noise (especially on the main menu) but I think the temperatures were normal.

I later tried enabling "Uncompressed Sims textures", this made my computer stop making so much noise which has gotten me worried as to how I should play the game graphically because I don't really understand what's going on with my computer, the main menu shouldn't be making my computer make so much noise and uncompressed textures should make it make more noise, I think the temperatures may be higher with it on though.

So I'm just confused, I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight as to how I should run my game because I've dreaded to play because of these issues, I can run the game completely smoothly with any settings however.

If anyone could inform me so I'm not harming my computer etc and understand why its doing this help would be appreciated because my computer has reaction really weirdly to some games.

My specs: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4690 CPU @ 3.50GHz 3.50GHz
8GB RAM
64 bit

Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

I'm not sure if that's all I need to say for the specs of if I even have the right information...

    UPDATE:

I checked the game with uncompressed textures again and my computer gets way less hot with it enabled, at least not as fast as with it disabled.

Make sure you have vertical Sync enabled in the games settings.
A high fps can cause the graphics card to make some noise. Enabling vertical sync should stop it.

@chesterbigbird I already do sadly, I always have that on as I get really worried with things like that, especially after on TS3 I was shot at 1000 FPS, after that I was frightened to death.

When it black screened (back then) the computer would seemingly continue running, however I couldn't make it respond or anything, my only choice at that point was to simply turn it off and on, it occasionally did this to me, I doubt it matters but I think I noticed the black screening was most often in build and buy mode. I just haven't got a clue what settings to even run the game on with out being scared of the computer, and the truth is I don't mind laptop mode but its just not quite as nice, I'm just super paranoid and don't know what to do anymore :(

Have you tried visiting the AMD website and searching for a current driver?
Have you verified that your video card and CPU are receiving sufficient air flow?

You should monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures with an application such as "SpeedFan"

Regardless, only a few minutes of raw data is needed... and the problem is likely CPU overheat.

I'd suggest measuring your CPU & GPU temps (and yes, hwmonitor all the way) not only in Sims but in some other software too, including some other CPU- and GPU-intensive things. I'm really tempted to think there's a hardware issue happening here of *some* kind.

Thanks for the HWMonitor program, it seems really simple and effective!

As for temps etc, I just tested the game with this.

My graphical settings this time was:
Everything Max, Lighting set at high instead of the better, Uncompressed textures disabled

Also on the recent run I have had a graphic mod enabled: The No blue darkness and No blue glow mod which can be found here: https: //lumialoversims.tumblr.com/tagged/sims-4-mod (remove spaces)

I zoomed out to see a lot of the neighbourhood and then set triple speed on, the computer this time did not react as badly, I DID however update my drivers after for this test.

But the case is its not the first time the computer has accepted something well and then later changes completely!

But anyway with this test I managed to get the following temperature information with HWMonitor (Sorry if its not proper, I'm new to it)

    CPU: Max = 70c/158F
    Min = 43c/109F
    Value 68c/154F

But I couldn't get anything for the GPU? Is there more I should post?

Also I'm not sure if this is too much for the computer at the moment?
Also from hardware if someone could give me recommended graphic settings would be nice.

But before I use them I would like diagnose what's wrong if possible first, because sometimes it gets really hectic and it just freaks me out.

To get the GPU, you have to open your game first and then hit your Windows's key on your keyboard to go to your desktop, then you open HWmonitor. When you scroll down a bit, you will see your GPU stats there. :) Then just go back to your game and play around for a bit.

I'm not too sure how to recommend settings for you cuz I'm not very good with AMD cards. XD Maybe someone else can help. That being said, I think it would be good if you check your temps as well and do some comparison and some fan noise comparisons. Technically, your computer should do less with uncompressed textures turned off so I don't know what's happening here.

Hey @SimlishPopstar, the GPU reading should be right below the CPU. It may also read the card as amd 7000 series

If you have no GPU reading can you confirm for me that the monitor is plugged into the card and not the motherboard

Next, can you confirm your new drivers are installed and that you have Crimson control panel - this is the app where you control the card settings

Also when was the last time you cleaned the tower of dust, dust build up clogs fans thus making hardware run hotter

I can walk you through all of this, my first impression you may have just have setting issues

Like in the game after cleaning tower of dust, checking drivers are installed go and turn on vsync save and exit game and try again

After running a quick test I found my AMD R9 200 series at/57c

The max was 67c if I got it correctly.

@ceejay402 what do you mean where the monitor is plugged in to? this is new to me completely!

I have got the new drivers I think now! Also I don't have the crimson control panel, I have the Amd catalyst control center but im not sure if its the same thing?

vsync is always enabled for me (also for tower of dust any tips for going about it?)

    @DeKay thanks for the info!

please post motherboard make and model. Also post power supply name specs. I'm guessing the computer is at least 2 years old. A crashing computer ( that is what a blank screen is ) can be caused by many things. Make sure the cooling fans are running properly. Could be too much gunk on the video fan causing it to run to slowly. Could be a stressed or failing power supply. Please also post make and model of memory modules. You need to eliminate the problem but my first guess is you have a failing component. If you have pets the fans tend to collect pet dander causing components to over heat. If the computer recovers it may not be too late but you should find the issue.

Did you remove the old AMD drivers before installing the new ones?

Ok good the temps for the gpu was that while in the game? If so not bad.

    How to clean tower http://m.wikihow.com/Clean-the-Inside-of-a-Computer

See if cleaning helps also test vsync is on in ccc. http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_8.html

Though if you have r9 200 with the latest drivers installed than it should be crimson control. Can you confirm you uninstalled prior drivers

Regarding where the monitor is plugge - if you had plugged into the motherboard connection at tower that may have explained why you didn't have gpu reading.
