New Version Uploaded!

**I have pulled this from the Exchange due to the .world file developing some mysterious affliction when I changed the world ID to allow me to upload a later version of the same world, you can now find the original unbroken version on my tumblr**
http://frogprincessq4.tumblr.com/post/132904573041/great-southern-land

The world is pretty much at its final stage for now. No sims and not much more than the basic lots, but I am done for the time being, I think. I'm burnt out again, anyway. There is plenty of room to add your favourite lots and sims from your library, but everything you need plus a few extras are in place.

Great Southern Land is a huge map with lots of open spaces. I have tried to create as much of a feeling of Australia as I can without using CC. Not that there is a lot of Australian CC out there (that I could find). This is my first full CAW project and it has been an enormous learning curve. I wouldn't say that this is a fully realised and polished world, but if you don't mind the work of customising a few lots to your taste and adding in a bunch of sims the world seems to be working really nicely. I placed a lot of empty lots around the map so that there are plenty of places to build without breaking the routing data that I have painstaking made as functional as I know how.

I have used assets from:
Lunar Lakes (decor for the science dome, only),
Monte Vista lighthouse changed to the base game lighthouse.
Dragon Valley Ombre Umbrella trees, I really wanted a greyish coloured tree and that's the only one available through official content.
The suspension bridge comes from Bridgeport
The arched bridge is from Twinbrook.
I've tried to use base game assets wherever possible, but these items above were really necessary. However, I recommend having all EPs, because I've built with bits of everything.

Store content: I have used a few things here and there, especially the pizza ovens, outdoor showers, the tea set and some kiddie stuff such as playpens. The grocery store has a bunch of stuff from the Al Fresco Market outside it, so if you don't have that you will probably need to redecorate that lot a little. The salon is adapted from Serenity Retreat. The gym has a climbing wall and the dancing barre and mat.

Please let me know if any problems crop up and I will try and fix them for the next version.

Thank you, @Bromsiekat I've been working on it obsessively for a few weeks now. It's huge.

History of the world so far:

Copy pasted from earlier comment made elsewhere:
So I've been working on making an Australian themed world in CAW - no it's nowhere near finished
    screenshot_original.jpg
    screenshot_original.jpg
    screenshot_original.jpg

It's probably too large a world for my computer to handle, but if it's going to feel authentic it needs lots of empty space ;)

ETA I particularly like the first screenshot :)

    Also copy pasted from elsewhere:
There is a new girl in town. She heard Great Southern Land needed playtesting and she was keen to live in the Outback :) (I had to remove those bollards, they were killing the routing :disappointed: )
    screenshot_original.jpg

Her new home, with a wide wrap-around verandah to help keep temperatures tolerable
    screenshot_original.jpg

Mira is a great sport and has already found herself a snake to play with. And yes, she went and found it autonomously  It's nice to see her getting into the spirit of it all.
    screenshot_original.jpg

Her first night in the new house and there was heavy rain. It's always good to get a bit of rain *inhales the smell of cold rain hitting hot baked earth*
    screenshot_original.jpg

The colours I used in the colour ramps are a combination of Lucky Palms and Egypt (I included some heat shimmer too). I just love it! I have gone screenshot mad :grimace: but I will call it quits for now, lol.
    screenshot_original.jpg

I am looking forward to letting her start a family. It just feels like home to me, out there <3 The world has some flaws in it, but until I have done some serious playtesting I will probably leave it as is for a while.

ETA to fix a mishap with posting one pic twice. Replaced pic 2. And yes, that is totally a TARDIS

You are doing some amazing work for your first world. I absolutely love the colors you pulled together for the firestorm - Mother Nature at her worst can still manage to be 🐸🐸🐸🐸 beautiful and you have really captured it <3

I love that blood red fire scenery. <3 Great job so far. Your very talented. :)

Credit for my terrain paints (and to remind me where I got them):

    http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=385025&highlight=terrain

Also, I love this shipping container paint. If anyone has my super-basic, unfinished, mini-test-world that's on the exchange, and you're wondering about the missing wall paint, well this is where to find it. I really must make an updated version as it's had way more downloads than expected and I only uploaded it so a friend could playtest it for me. :anguished:

I spent nearly all day today working on the lighthouse and its rock. I still can't say that I'm entirely satisfied, but I have the lighthouseFX hacked in there, so it is a functioning lighthouse now  and I converted the whole rock from non-routable to routable with a little lot on top, just for fun. The lighthouse is from the Roaring Heights world I think.

    screenshot_original.jpg

I'm also working the tedious task of (re)sculpting the beachside terrains. I thought they looked ok, until I was in game and realised that they were really just way too steep. As you can see, it's a whole lot of beach  I'm hoping it's nearly done, but I'll have to go into live mode to be totally sure, I think.

The blurriness is the heat shimmer from Egypt.

It's a very pretty world so far. I especially love the lighting in the first picture! <3

I think I nearly have an Alpha version ready for testing. I mean how much time can one person spend tweaking lighting and weather files before it become an unhealthy obsession? Alpha version will have terrain, effects and weather at 90% plus completed. Really all that needs more than (endless) polishing is lot building and adding sims. *Sigh* heads back to tweaking the sky colour some more.

I'm hoping to get an Alpha version of my Australian world up in the next day or two. Mostly, all that's left is building stuff on the lots and adding Sims, but getting colour ramps and weather patterns just so is sending me around the bend  I really want to get it just right, but "good enough" may have to do

    screenshot_original.jpg

I just can't decide whether or not to use the effects here. I half love, half hate it :grimace:

I have updated the OP to show that the world is now released in Alpha version. I have playtested it. Pretty much everything seems to be working right (still a sim hour here and there where lighting/weather is a bit off). I have tried to optimise routing as much as possible for maximum playability. I hope that it will be an enjoyable destination for a sim or two.

This literally looks like the coast where I used to live. Excited to play!
Infact, even down to the old abandoned mansion near the coast and canoe. You have no idea how much this replicates it. I live in a different state now, but If I go back (my parents still own the house as a second home) I will take a photo just to show :)

I confess I had to remodel the sand a bit here, apparently Create-a-World didn't like how many terrain paints I used :'( (I learned so much while building this world) but I modelled this area roughly off my younger self's memories of Queensland coastal towns. Back before the tourism boom hit them

After my burn out, I am back at work with my Aussie world. Lots are coming along nicely. Sea, Sky and Light files are still driving me batty though. I think when I upload the next version I will either not bother with custom lighting files, or else I will upload 2 versions - one with regular weather and one with crazy weather  It's an interesting side project, but getting it the way I want it so frustrating.

Edit: also, I am getting on top of the routing problems of the Alpha, phew!

Lots are coming along nicely. I've been adding in some more bits and pieces around the world such as:

Wow! It's really coming along. I like how you've added little touches here and there: the outdoor bar next to the cinema, what looks like a bus shelter near the hospital....

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Today's lot building. A swimming hole:

And a small park/hang out area:

    screenshot_original.jpg

I am cleaning up the area I call Paradise Beach. I bulldozed everything and am starting from scratch. I'm really enjoying the way it's coming along. I know my map is really flat, but I get so annoyed when my sims start complaining about everything being in the way and refusing to do things on slopes *sigh* My next world will I think have a bunch more hilly areas, but with lots of "no go here" paint.
