Basements Question

BryonyRaeBryonyRae Posts: 5,181 Member
Is it just me, or is it impossible to build an exposed basement within a room? If you've managed to do it, please tell me how!

You are supposedly able to remove the ceiling to the basement and make it exposed according to the The Sims vid they posted earlier this week. They stated to select the basement level and then click the yellow border and select "remove ceiling." Haven't played since the patch so I haven't tested it.

Yes, and that works fine if the basement isn't built below an enclosed room. However, within a room, it doesn't actually delete the flooring. At least, I can't get it to do so...

hmmm...weird. So it deletes the ceiling of the basement but not the flooring of the room above? Might have to remove the flooring the old fashioned way from the room above.

Aha! Finally found out myself. It's actually not very intuitive. You have to delete both the floor of the room above ground, and de ceiling of the basement! If the room above ground was already build, then you delete it's floor first, then you can go select the basement, go back to ground level and select the yellow border to delete the ceiling of the basement.

Though I wonder why there is not base shaped basement like normal rooms. I like building that way....

Yep, that's exactly what you have to do, which seems very clunky to me. I've tweeted @SimGuruHouts to see if it's by design or possibly an oversight. If by design, we can always add a request to change that to the Build Mode Feedback thread.

Hello Bryony :) Ruthless KK has written a guide to Basements. I just thought I would post the link here just in case it helps you or anyone else. I have also added it to the Building Tips and Tutorials thread.

@DieterPrivate You can use the room shapes as basements too; you don't need a special "basement" room type. :)

@BryonyRae Regarding the way floors and ceilings work, it's currently working as intended though we are always evaluating what improvements could be made to the game. It actually starts to get into the issue of individual floor tile deletion which is something I know people are interested in and something I've been interested in since the early days of TS4 development, but have not yet been able to work out a design that we're satisfied would be beneficial to the system as a whole (it's more complicated that one would initially think).

As always, thanks for the feedback and please do keep updating the Build Mode Feedback thread, I love that thing.

Thanks for responding, @SimGuruHouts. I definitely understand that it's not as easy as it sounds to tweak some of these things. With every patch, I can see that you guys are doing what you can to give us what we're asking for, and I appreciate it. Thank you for following the feedback thread, and yes, absolutely, we'll keep it going. :)
