Maybe I've hit a whole new wall of pessimism, but I don't find this instills a lot of confidence, given the silence on so many issues.
Seriously, how many months it took to realize this? We will see how they work on "Emotions" in the next year. If they do.
It's concerning that is this is one of the things that they said was far better than in previous iterations, going as far to say that the previous iterations' emotions were just fictions, while the Sims 4 really DO have emotions. While that's obviously salesbabble, I have no clue what they actually know about their own game.
They not only said this is far better, they also said this (and some other random stuff) is the reason they had to scrap things like appropriate teen heights or toddlers. To flesh those features out to a full extent. The more i think about it, the angrier i get.

Yeah, I agree. I'd far rather have teens that look like teens than this...

I think it's fatigue for those of us who have been asking for better. There's only so much we are listening that you can hear without real answers or signs that it's happening. We all get days when we find it hard to believe.
to be fair in the old "ask" guru a few months ago i reported the same issue about how empty the ai is and i basically get that answer:
it's not like the ai is bad it's just need improviment and is much better than before"
then i keep bring this many others time and get almost the same asnwer
"this is something we are looking for"....
and this answer keep repeating but until now i see little to none change on that, then i'm not gonna jump on the "they are listening" car before i see this really happen, this team looks like the "we are listening peoples" which gonna keep listening "forever" and only does changes when desperates moments come, before that they just keep "listening".
Ok here are the last of the cast members @brainybee - the fire family- I won't give their names because they are an actual family I know - Ironically they work in the fire prevention industry - so as you can imagine, this lucky episode had extra comedy value for me.
- The Dad is an elder, Mum is adult- the two girls are young adult and the son (again, obviously a) child
I think that's it - anything else you need let me know

I laughed a little too hard at that.
I'm excited to see what happens across games.
Our little PsychoSausage in all of his Sims 3 glory:
His traits are: insane, innappropriate, evil, mean spirited, and kleptomaniac
His favorites are: kids' music (to be really annoying), Goopy Carbonara, and the color Mustard Yellow
His Lifetime Wish: Celebrity Psychic (there just wasn't anything exactly like mischief in the LTW of Sims 3)
I put him in The Suburban Temple House (unfurnished) in Twinbrook. He immediately got into a fight with himself.
It will take me a while to get the other families finished. If you can suggest houses that came with Twinbrook that would work for the other two families (so I don't have to make them from scratch) that would help me get to actually playing faster!
So here it is: (WARNING: very long post)
(I couldn't find a hot dog suit so he's going to be a gorilla kay?)
Just to clarify, they're all in the same household because you can't visit your neighbors in TS2.
First scenario:
After a long period of time always insulting each other back and forth, I managed to get him furious with both of the Tense ladies (here is Petra shoving him).
A fight breaks out! (Petra autonomously chose to attack the sausage guy)
Here's Riley bursting into tears as she runs from the scene:
Second scenario:
Cooking is awesome outside, in the fresh air!
Woops! The mom starts to burn as her family freaks out.
She perishes.
Oh no!! The boy catches on fire!!
He also dies, despite numerous attempts at extinguishing the flames.
The dad immediately goes into aspiration failure, as he had fears of his family dying.
EDIT- Yikes, so the dad was a Knowledge sim, sorry! Not a family sim.

At least it had an effect on their relation. The email/chat system thing was a problem in TS3 as well. It did actually work for text messages, so that the recipient received a notification and checked his/her phone at the first opportunity, but not for regular phone calls. In both TS3 and TS4, even if it appears that you're having a long phone conversation with someone, it doesn't correspond to what happens at the other end.
Actually ... Well I don't remember about the S3 email, but texting in the game does work.
I had a sim text her romantic interest, and (yay for open world) he got the text in the park immediately and he actually read it.
She then texted her enemy and she read it as well. That's why when I don't see that in S4 it bothers me some.
I love how the Gurus have been tagged multiple times in this thread yet they still won't respond to proof that emotions - the main selling point of this game - are completely borked. I guess nothing says "Weirder Stories" and "They're So Smart It's Weird" better than apathetic Sims that act completely independent from their traits and aspirations.
Oh TS4, I really do wonder if you'll end up in the same ditch as SimCity 2013 with pretty much all the people in charge of designing you jumping ship.
While I don't entirely agree with the initial premise of this post, this little story did tickle my funny bone and I quite enjoyed reading it! @EmberDahl You may not think so, but you absolutely made lemonade from lemons here. To me, these moments are what make The Sims so delightful and endearing, if one can look past what seems irrational. This is the kind of stuff which we can always look back on and have a good laugh. Thanks for sharing!
Willy Weiner, is that what you named him? Lol! "Will he win her?" *snickers*
@EmberDahl, I just need an idea of what their houses are like. Can anyone with Twinbrook suggest good pre-made houses so I don't have to make them from scratch? Should I take out the fire dept building from my town or does it matter? Should I change Ember Burns' name to Ash?

I have had to favourite this. I love how in TS2 everyone automatically reacts to their surroundings. When you compare, it really makes TS4 look backwards regarding sim intelligence. You know things are getting bad when a TS4 fan such as myself starts to feel negatively towards the game.

I simply chose random houses.
The only reason I was worried about it is because I don't want anyone to say, well that house was way smaller or there were too many beds or something...
i have a sim who i was leveling up her mischief skill and was working on her aspiration, one of the goal was to clog drains in peoples home, so i went to a sims home who disliked my sim, and i went in her bathroom and clogged the sink and shower, i thought since the owner of the home didnt see me do it , i didnt get in trouble or atleast get yelled at, so then i went to clog her kitchen sink.
while my sim is almost done. the other sim woke up from her nap, comes walking out the bedroom and spots my sim, so im thinking "uh oh" as my sim has a wrench in her hand screwing off the sink's faucet. but she keeps walking by and goes outside to pick up her trashcan that i had knocked over before entering her home earlier. i finish doing my job and afterwards i start a conversation with the sim, we have a friendly chat, i felt bad messing up her house so i repaired what i broke and left. ... sorry if this was confusing i tried my best describing the situation lol but long story short "smarter sims" i guess ? :P

I love the look that he's giving to his own stats! Like he's really unhappy about being a test subject.

EMOTIONAL SIMS IN TS4? I THINK NOT.
