I also highly recommend Business as Usual Bistro if you don't have it already. It goes everywhere and turns any open building into a restaurant. Try it at The Old Mill

They work with the bakery and canning station as well as with the nectar maker so pretty versatile. I have the chickens and cows and to be honest I tend to use them as decorative objects rather than interact with them. Other people play them a lot more. The items that come with those two sets I do use in quite a few of my lots as I like the farmy/country look.

I'd also check out some of the items from the Fairy sets. Not all fit in with farming/country but there are some bits and bobs there.

Most of the sets are available as individual items so you can cherry pick the bits you like. Happy shopping
Grandpa's Grove

If a person owns the Seasons expansion, they will have to deal with seasonal disruption of harvesting, and for that it's handy to have the greenhouse.
Stones Throw Greenhouse
http://store.thesims3.com/setsProductDetails.html?productId=OFB-SIM3:
OP also asked about bugginess. I think issues with the greenhouse have been resolved. But if using the 'roof decorations' that give glassy tops to greenhouses, as I understand it, they need the top level underneath the glass roofs to have a floor layered there so the building is weather tight. If someone knows better, they can share.
While getting all these things can be super expensive if you buy full price, there are also options for free sim points from advertisements, there seems to be a lot of gifting; also via daily deals and weekly sales one can work out ways to help with costs of various sets or just get some of the premium items. Like the chicken coop alone, the tractor, and other such things.
This is such an enormous game that I think none of us probably ever really explore the full potential of what we already own!
