Composer Appreciation Thread!

MegandtheMoonMegandtheMoon Posts: 1,831 Member
I thought I would start this thread for anyone who wants to share works by their favourite composers!

It can be any style, from any background (I personally have a penchant for film scores ;) )

But I thought I would start with an Italian composer called Ludovico Einaudi. His music is mainly piano based with beautiful string accompaniments. I absolutely love his music style. I was lucky enough to see him live in concert last year (cue fangirl moment).

The piece below is an older one of his which I'm currently teaching myself, and it's my favourite  It's called Divenire, which I believe translates as 'To Become'.

The musical piece that you posted is so very nice! @MegantheMoon :) Thanks for sharing it with us! It will be lovely to enjoy coming back to listen to it again later too. It was great that you were able to see the composer performing live in concert this year!

Great composers, thanks @Simpkin Do you have any favourite pieces by them? :) I really like Sarabande by Handel. And the Radetsky March by Johann Strauss was one of my xylophone exam pieces in high school music ;)

Well, Vivaldi's my ultimate favourite. I like a lot of his stuff. I'm really bad with titles/names though. I know when I started playing the violin I wanted to learn Händel's aria Lascia Ch'io Pianga.

I don't play it anymore. I used to play it. For the past few years I've been living at places where I can't practice playing (it's too loud and I don't wanna bother anyone). I might pick it up again in the future. Or maybe I'll start with the piano.

Hey @Simpkin I'm sorry to hear you can't play your violin at the moment! I really hope you pick it up again in the future. It's never too late to start again :) I recently bought a violin, all because of the violinist Nicola Benedetti actually! I was a volunteer for a music project that she was part of. I was really inspired and went and bought a starter violin. That was in August, I haven't had the confidence to get lessons yet! Lol.

One of my very favourite pieces ever is The Lark Ascending by Vaughn Williams, the violin solo is gorgeous <3

    Let's see...

Film soundtrack composers: John Williams, of course, also Harry Gregson-Williams (did the music for the Chronicles of Narnia movies), Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings trilogy). Also like the work of Murray Gold on Doctor Who; this is one of my favorites:

Traditional classical composers? Bach, of course. Beethoven. And a big fan of Bruckner from college when I dated a French horn player who was a Bruckner fan (his Symphony #7, 2nd movement is hauntingly beautiful -- he was working on it when he heard that Richard Wagner had died, and he was a fan of Wagner). Also like a lot of Vivaldi's music.

Oh, I love Einaudi, too! And I also saw him live... Perhaps about a year ago, I don't remember. But it was great. I was sitting in the front row, and I thought it was really cute how he really seemed to enjoy playing :)

I also like some of Philip Glass' work. Not all of it, but I saw the Koyaanisqatsi (http://www.philipglass.com/music/recordings/koyaanisqatsi.php) performed live a couple of years ago, and it was incredible.

Along with the classic composer mentioned above, I love Jesper Kyd, a Danish composer, who has worked on video game, television, and film scores. He has composed soundtracks for the Assassin's Creed series, Hitman series, Borderlands series, Darksiders II and State of Decay, among many others. His scores use orchestra, choir, acoustic manipulations and electronic soundscapes.

Those are brilliant suggestions @stilljustme2 ! I love all of those composers too! The Murray Gold piece is beautiful. (I cried when David Tennant's Doctor regenerated. Lol. I blame the music.)

PS: Can I just ask, how do you all manage to post your Youtube videos so that they actually play in the comment?! Sorry if I'm being a dunce, but mine only show as links, and the videos would be way better! ;)

Agree with you there, I like some Philip Glass works but not all. ;)

For some reason, yours are posting as secure links (the https) -- to get a link that would post as a video, you probably need to go into "Share" on the video page then copy and paste the link that shows up there.

OK, next song from me :) This is a gorgeous piano piece with string accompaniment, written by composer Michael Nyman. It was written for the film The Piano. It really is beautiful - I hope you enjoy it!

Another song from me (since no one else has posted any for a while *sobs*)

This is from the Great Gatsby soundtrack (stunning!) composed by Craig Armstrong. Craig Armstrong is a Scottish film composer, and I had the good fortune of getting to attend a seminar with him at university. It was amazing, he talked us through his composition style, and how he approached new projects. At the time of the seminar he had just finished working on the Incredible Hulk soundtrack, so he actually talked us through a scene, describing why he wrote the music the way he did. It was fascinating, and he's a very intelligent composer!

Anyway! As I said this piece is from the Great Gatsby soundtrack. It's so poignant. It plays during the scene where Gatsby admits he 'let' himself fall in love with Daisy. I <3 it and I hope you do too.

I'm going to bed now, so enjoy!

I always fall in love with the Assassin's Creed soundtracks. This one is done by Brian Tyler, an American composer, producer, conductor, and film producer known for his scores for motion pictures and video games such as Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Eagle Eye, The Expendables, Fast Five, Fast and Furious, The Expendables 2, Law Abiding Citizen, Final Destination 5, Rambo, Constantine, Now You See Me, Battle: Los Angeles, Far Cry 3, The Expendables 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, & Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. In 2014 he wrote new NFL Theme for ESPN and often conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra[citation needed]. He won Composer of the Year at the 2013 Cue Awards and was nominated for a 2014 BAFTA Award. In 2010, Tyler was inducted into the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences[citation needed]. As of August 2014 his films have grossed $6.7 billion worldwide. One of his next films is Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I haven't heard much of John Adams' music, but I saw his opera Doctor Atomic and it was amazing. And the music I've heard, I've really liked. So, I guess I could say I like his music, even though I don't know that much about it :)

Now, slightly off topic: I'm still not having any luck posting the actual videos instead of just links. I've tried just posting as http but that didn't work. Any suggestions?

I think I've managed to post a video once, and I didn't use any tags on it. I just pasted the link on the post.
