"But I still think it will be easier for both participants and judges to have the price from the gallery entry."

I do, too. I mean, some lots are $6000 and some are $2000. This isn't Sims 3. We can see Gallery pricing in one click as we are designing. Have no clue what to take off at this point. If the lot is included then the lot needs to be specified, otherwise, it's up for grabs on where someone places it when they are judging.

    OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM
CHALLENGE #: 2 - Curtis. Douglas Curtis... The Third.
    FORUM ID: DieterPrivate
    ORIGIN ID: DieterPrivate
SIM: Curtis III, Douglas Curtis III
    LOT: Adventurer's Treasury
    LINK TO ENTRY SLIDESHOW: Presentation
ENTRY DETAILS: I have build on a 40x30 lot and ended with §149.911 for the whole lot. I build this in the area where the Goths live, so the lot itself was pretty expensive. I really wanted to challenge myself by creating it as a real penthouse, by which I mean to actually build it as the upper floor of the building. The lower floors are just a shell, though I did add flooring and wallpaper to them. All of this within the budget! It was not that easy, but also not that hard. Because of the new push/pull capability of build mode, it was very easy to fiddle with the building to get the size right according to budget. So for the judges: It's only the upper floor that counts as the entry, even though the rest is included in the budget. It took me a long time, and generally, I think I'm a slow builder, due to OCD, lol. I wonder how fast/slow others are? When checking my entry in the gallery, I saw that two uploads appear, but I'm unable to delete the first one. It always reappears. Have to file a bug.... Oh, and before I forget: I really like all the other builds, these challenges are a source of inspiration, seeing a lot of creative solutions!
CREDIT FOR CC/RECOLORS: Didn't use any.

Same here. I actually had a quick, easy fix -- for some reason I'd used the 'Modern Floating Stairway' for the stairs that aren't even seen in the penthouse and they're crazy expensive compared to the cheapest ones, so I swapped them out and reuploaded.

While I was editing the stairs, I resisted the temptation to put some more 'artifacts' in the penthouse using the new buydebug cheat because I don't know how those are going to be handled in the build and share challenges -- there are some seriously cool decorative items in debug but they're 0 simoleons, so I figured I'd better not dress things up with them until I know if they're allowed. Were the free buydebug items allowed in Sims 3 build and share challenges?
Ah, pretty sure I read somewhere in the guidelines that you weren't supposed to use $0 or super cheap price debug items... Maybe it's best for this challenge that they didn't come out 'til today!

Question for you: was your Gallery price actually lower than the lot price shown in game? My Gallery price was way higher, so I'm trying to figure out if I'm looking at the wrong number.

    Did you played the lot?

I moved Douglas in at one point to take pictures, but that was a separate save; I didn't actually play the one I uploaded. I'm so confused...do we need to add $ on top of the Gallery price then? That would definitely be a bummer. Because of how the cost was showing up in game, I figured the Gallery was my top-end (worst case) cost. I hope a BnS moderator will show up soon to clarify this. If I have to, I guess I could simply delete the gaming unit on the balcony...

That's how I kept checking my budget - I would go to save the lot to my library, check the price, then go back and add or subtract items. I hope the gallery price is the correct one, because that's what I based mine on. If the gallery price is wrong and we have to add on the cost of the lot we built on, then mine is over budget... Oh dear... oh well, not much I can do about it now... lol =)

It took me three times as well.

I started with an amazing solarium and then the build for the rest of the stuff wasn't going the way I wanted it. Plus, looking at the early entries and seeing that I am SOooooo out of my league here... I got ideas on ways to possibly improve or things I wanted to try... and the third build was what I decided to go with. I hope it is likeable a little bit at least...

I also learned that I really like playing the Sim and playing the game, not just building. I had to play test the lot to make sure everything worked, and I wanted to get a party going for pictures, so I had to go out to the nightclub and gym to gather friends.

The balcony did end up having a fountain built into it. But it didn't quite have the same effect. I'd post a picture of it, but, I'm still a forum newbie... You'd think I'd have a higher post count, seeing as I've been around since the start of Sims 3, well, really since the first Sims game, but the forums didn't really start until 3. But, I never visited the forums until just recently over on the Sims 3 forums, and then here.

I'm having a lot of fun with these challenges. Hopefully, my builds aren't totally pathetic... I'm not perfect... I pay more attention to function than fashion... It's hard for me to put in items that don't effect stats. And... I've found that this game severely lacks options of good items to put into the game... The lack of CASt really bums me out. But, I'm trying to learn to work with what I got.

It's funny, some of the items on display are kinda quirky... I used a chicken... kid's toy figurines... LOL You just have to pretend that they are archeological finds and trophies and such...

Okay... gonna stop babbling now... lol

Don't feel bad for being confused. The issue of figuring out the cost of the build was one of the reasons I decided to sit this challenge out. (It wasn't the only reason, otherwise I'd have just been all, "Yo, how should we do this?" early on.) It was annoying enough to figure out the cost in Sims 3 because of depreciation, but I had finally gotten to where I was able to avoid that being an issue; now it's a pain in the butt to track cost as you go again.

I hope this gets sorted in time for the next challenge!

Well, just in case it doesn't get clarified in time, or I'm unable to check on this thread later, I went ahead and uploaded a second version of the home with the gaming pad deleted, which will definitely come in under budget. I updated my original entry accordingly. I figured better safe than sorry. Good luck, everyone!

When anyone played the Douglas character for play testing, did your Designer sim end up getting romanced by Douglas? My jaw dropped when Lizzie wound up romanced

Well, I was so confused I'm not worrying about it at this point. Hopefully the lot will be set next time so we can budget without confusion. What I love about Sims 4 is the ease at which you can check value as you're making it.

I didn't have my realtor sim meet with Douglas in the photos. He already had a harem. ;)

Lol @DieterPrivate, you tricked me. I loaded your sim into my game just to double check and I wound up finding out that great minds think alike. Our sims look extremely similar to each other but I found the differences and am happy to report that yours is entirely original.

Phew, that had me worried. I apologize if this does offend you, I am just glad we think alike but not too much alike!

I know, you're so right, it is all about having fun. Thanks for the reminder! On that note, I AM having a lot of fun building, I always do. I just wish I wasn't such a self-critical perfectionist easily intimidated by all of my fellow builders' incredible talents. I'll work on loosening up on myself and hopefully get an entry finished in time to enter another round.

    Anyway, great job everyone! :)

    Build-n-Share Challenge #3 "The Olsen's"

It was with much stifled, exasperated laughter that you accepted the profuse thanks of Douglas Curtis. The ever faithful (and merciless) Rose spent most of that interview pretending to be completely oblivious towards the hints and suggestions for dinners or drinks. Finally, after managing to cut the schmoozing and posturing short, you shut the door behind him and lean back against it. You lock eyes with Rose and both of you let out a deep, relieved sigh.

    “Close up early?” You ask.

“Drinks?” Rose responds with. You smile and turn to lock the door.

Barely have your fingers touched the deadbolt lock than you see a man and a woman coming up the walk. “Drinks are on pause Rose. Clients.” You grin, hearing Rose’s muffled profanity, then open the door graciously for the couple.

They look startled, then smile back. The woman strikes you as a very warm and friendly person, with sunny blonde hair and bright blue eyes. “Oh! How nice!” She says in a playful voice. Her husband smiles, “Great welcome.” Already balding and possessed of a close cropped bead, his eyes are just a blue and project a calm steadiness that make you feel like you’re reunited with an old friend.

“Thank you. Please come in.” You shut the door, then introduce yourself.

“I'm Don and this is my wife Judy. We’re here for a house.” He says.

“Great! Lets go back to my office.” You say, leading them back.

After many compliments on the interior decorating and the layout, Judy settles into her chair, folds her hands in her lap and then gets right to the heart of it. “Don and I are wanting a custom house. We've decided that since we’re going to spend the rest of our lives here in Willow Creek, we want something exactly right.”

“Define ‘exactly right’.” You request, taking notes.

“Well, we both like colonial architecture, so that's what we would like for the exterior and the landscaping. But inside, we love modern interiors. My favorite color is blue and his is brown.”

“Minimum of 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and one half bath…but if you can put more bedrooms in that would be great.” Don interjects. “With a soaking tub. My hobby is woodworking so if you could put together a nice workshop for me that would lovely.”

“None of that sounds like an issue.” You say confidently.

Judy smiles, “Well, there is one more thing….”

    “Okay.”

“Our parents are going to be coming out in a month. His mother and father and my mother. All three are retired, and they don't always get along. So rather than build on a wing or two for them, we've decided on separate houses. But we’ll get into that later. Lets just say we need a nice large lot and our new house to be positioned with that in mind.”

“Can do. What's my budget for this build?”

“Well, we were thinking about $100,000.” suggests Don. “That enough?”

“Sure. Will 2 weeks be soon enough?”

“Sure.” He stands up, holds out his hand. “Cant wait to see what you make.”

“Me too!” Judy chimes in, also shaking your hand before being escorted out by Rose.

You jot down a few more notes before Rose comes back, chirping “Doors locked!”

“Then lets go!” You say, grabbing your jacket.

    Requirements:
•Large lot 50x50 (use the Oakenstead plot in the Sage Estates area)
    •2 Beds
•2.5 Baths (with at least one actual bathtub)
    •Colonial Architecture
    •Modern Interior
    •Colonial Landscaping
    •Woodworking Shop
    •100k budget

    Optional Challenges:
Sims: Make Don and Judy, Don's Aspiration is perfectionist and Judy is active, the rest as they say, is up to you.
Room: Make Don's woodworking shop, the budget for this one room challenge is 15k.

    Deadline midnight CMT october 15th!

Sorry for asking, but what's a half bathroom? Is it like a toilet with a sink only?
I also think the lot is too big for the budget/house they want. I don't know if I can enter this in time....
Also, we need to make sure another house can be on the lot, right?
    (Oooh, so many questions....)

Yes, half bath does mean sink and toilet

Hmmm I need to look at that particular lot after bulldozing to find out land cost, which will give what budget we really have.

Design Hint: modern often means minimalist, so modern style people are often happy with "holes" in their design.

Funny enough, this challenge has my strong point(colonial is seen in the south all the time) and my weak point(modern....ugh)!

OK, I have the actual budget after lot price, and it stings.

    Lot S$1000
    Budget Now S$90,000

I am not too sure how we can build a two bed, two and half bath main house plus in-law housing within that budget. Even I am kind of worried on this one...

Edit: Sorry, I misunderstood. In-law housing is a challenge for later. I suppose I can build a house within this budget, still hesitant but I have an idea thanks to the modern interior challenge.

Edit2: Did not want to post a third post and risk being thought of as a bumper. Just wanting to say that my version of Don & Judy are created for the Sim Challenge, you can find them in the gallery under #buildnshare #buildnshare3 #cook #foodies
Since there was not a last name mentioned in the story, I figured I would go ahead and give them the last name of Chalthree, short for Challenge Three lol.

I don't know about you, but MY realtor would never have said, "Sure!" to that's enough. ;) So glad it's for one house. lol!

Hello #BuildnShare team! First, thank you for your feedback on my build for challenge 1. Second, I'm looking forward to this next one because I don't believe I've ever done colonial style architecture. Third, I have a question before I do this next challenge and prepare my slideshow. In the feedback you stated "It would have been nice to see a top down image of each floor to really get a hold of the layout." Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by top down view? The last picture in my slideshow was an aerial view of the only floor, but is this not what you are looking for? Or perhaps the last slide was just missed? Here's the link to the slideshow again if you want to go back and look at it: Kazasa Interior Design

Edit: I am just curious so I have the right image in my next slideshow. Thanks for your time!

Geez! I have the building finally built after much trial and error, then I moved onto putting down main furniture with touches of decorating and now I have blown little over half the budget. Just on interior and building! A few more touches inside and then I get to tackle the landscaping...

Groan, groan, complain, complain, still fighting the budget as I build! I think I have the modern thing figured out, so my only battle is the budget.

Anyone else started this challenge yet? I'd like to hear about your progress, building figured out, interior decorating progress, etc. No details, just an approximate on how far along you are!
