Decorator Tips

Mstybl95Mstybl95 Posts: 5,883 Member
Lets share some interior decorating tips and tricks with one another.

I like the cluttered, lived in look so instead of using desks I use counter islands:

Making custom media centers:

Sometimes decor above the door adds that extra bit of oomph:

Mix and match cabinet colors:

And that's about all I have for now. Share yours. I love to get creatively inspired.

    Bookmarked thread. Great ideas.
On a slightly related note I was wondering today do sims need the full length of the bed to get in it or can you use the space next to the top?

Great suggestions and ideas! I especially like the counters used instead of a desk.

You have some really creative ideas! I never would have thought to use a counter instead of a desk, but I really like the look of it! Your entertainment center also looks amazing! What an inspiration. I'm going to have to try these ideas! :D

It depends. I have tried putting multiple things next to the bed hoping the sim would get in. So you can place tables, lamps, plants, anything that is just that single tile. I tried placing the bassinet next to it, but the sim wouldn't get in on that side. BUT...I did discover that sims can scoot to the other side of the bed by doing that. LOL. I also tried putting a chair there and that also blocked the path. It really just depends on what it is and the footprint of the object.

And thanks everyone. I hope you post pics of how you decorate, too. :)

Great tips, thanks so much! I love building houses but kind of burn out on decorating since I pick the same few objects I like and use them over and over, so I really appreciate stuff like this. :)

Great tips @Mstybl195 I love the way you used the kitchen units around the television so I had a go myself - genius idea! Well done!

Awesome! I think we set up the room the same exact way, too. LOL

Ooh superb wall counter thingys !

I might have something useful. If you are enlarging toys etc and you are already building with foundations then if you place them on their own little foundation instead of the floor then kids won't suddenly walk off with your 24 foot tall giraffe.

I'm bookmarking this thread, too -- your ideas are so creative! I will definitely be using the entertainment center one and the island desk. :) I'm kind of in the same boat as @kristinemancuso. I LOVE to construct the buildings themselves, but I find myself using the same wall coverings and furnishings and color schemes over and over.

I don't know if this would be new or useful for anyone, but I did discover recently that you can sandwich a kitchen counter between two walls and then use solid fencing on the front wall to make it a half-wall which gives you sort of a 'built in' look and a shelf that allows you to place some of the larger clutter/sculpture/plant items that won't fit on the regular wall shelves. It's only decorative, though -- sims can't use anything that's on the shelf because they see a 'wall' between them and the object -- so it's no good as a desk, etc. Something like this:

Now, if only there was an actual half wall that we could put any wall covering we want on! :)

Half walls are on my Christmas wish list :)

Wow, these are some amazing ideas! I can build a home no problem, it is the decorating inside that gets me (and its no wonder, I can hardly decorate my RL home lol). I have bookmarked this thread for sure. I love all the creative uses for kitchen cabinets. I will be playing more with those in my game today!!

Omg, I never even thought of that happening when I enlarge stuff, lol. Now I kind of want to know what that looks like, though. Thanks for the tip! :)

@DippyDesigns, the game update today that added stuff makes me think we may get our half-walls yet. So excited to see what's coming in the future! ETA: I said that before I realized that today's update added a buydebug cheat. Buydebug! I'm ridiculously excited about this. Off to try it out!

@DieterPrivate, thanks! I was just fooling around with fencing and came up with it. I'm still finding new stuff every time I play this game. I only JUST yesterday discovered roofline trim. I'm a little embarrassed about that, lol. I was like, 'What's this? Ohhhhhhh, cool.' :D

@ahholladay - That looks so amazingly unique! I love it. I'm definitely going to try incorporating that into a house. Maybe a luxurious master bedroom. Thanks for sharing! I would never have thought of it.

Super thread! I love to see the creative things people come up with to give their interiors a unique touch. One of the things I really miss from TS3 is being able to recolor and decorate the ceiling. I'm one of those people that always looks up, both while building and playing. The only thing I've come up with so far in TS4 is to use shelving (I size it up) to at least line the ceiling on a wall or two:

Because the shelves have to be against the wall, it's limited, and there are often conflicts with the collision boxes of other objects, but when it can be done, I think it lends a nice touch. If any of you have figured out cool stuff to do with the ceiling, I can't wait to see it!

I still don't understand ceilings. Are floors ceilings? I tried clicking the yellow line but I can only find that 1 time out of 10. And I have never looked up to see a ceiling in build mode. Help?
  • Mstybl95Mstybl95 Posts: 5,883 Member
That looks so cool! I have been so annoyed with ceilings. I also like to change them up. I want a way to do ceiling beams. And I also notice that sometimes there is a roof and sometimes there isn't. I don't know what that is all about.

Oh, that is so cool! I look up, too, usually just when trying to take screencaps, but still. Your shelves there added so much 'punch' to that wall and look awesome with the curtains you used. Great trick!

How do you get it designed like that? everything spaces out and I can't find the tall cabinets or small cupboards anywhere

Where you choose colours click the little gear symbol and turn auto counters off. Now you have many choices :)
