guess what just happened to me!

I was playing the sims then I clicked save and was writing something when I looked up my screen was black and my pc wasn't responding so I reset it and went back in the game and to my horror when my neighbourhood loaded all my houses were gone! as well as every single family! so I got out of the game and went into the TS3 folder to see and only the .backup file was there but not the actual game file (lucky I have a copy of my game backed up on my desktop, however I've lost alot of progress) is there a way to restore my game because the .backup file is still there or not? and does anyone why this has happened? please help

Rename the .backup file by removing the .backup and you should be able to play with less progress lost.

that appears to happen when you interrupt a save before it's finished. It like the x-box... the "do not turn off console" thing but more of "do not close the game".

Yeah, anything interrupted while saving tends to get corrupted.
