This game looks to be just what I wanted TS4 to be... so I am so glad that I stumbled upon this !! I will be watching to see how this turns out. I want to play the game the way I WANT TO, but I always end up doing the things TS4 wants me to do. I love the customization abilities for the world, objects and this looks like my cup of tea!

I really love the customization of the world. It's like Sims 3 but better.

What I'm hoping for, however, are dynamic animations between characters that make them feel alive. I want the best from Sims 2
    • meaningful idle animations
    • status animations representing low needs or a state of distress
    • automatic animations of Sims recognizing and acknowledging each others' presence
    • animations that SHOW emotion. SHOW emotion, don't TELL emotion (specifically criticizing TS4 emotion system)

Yeah! You nailed it! That's exactly why I continue to play TS2. That behavior is the best. It's seems to me Maxis has never been able to recreate a Sim and their ability to make them feel like living creatures since that game. I'm hoping PBY will bring that back to life. At least, that's my hope and dream.

Yes. We know from developer comments that Sims 2 was built on the original Will Wright Sims 1 engine. For Sims 3 and 4, the engine was scrapped and built up from scratch. I think that's a relevant fact.

I thought 2 was a new engine, and 3 was built off it as well? That's what I recall, anyway. 4 obviously is another engine, retrofitted for single player. 5 is supposedly going to be on Unreal Engine, which could be fraking awesome - depending on EAxis, anyway.

I'm mainly hyped for LBY because it puts the control of the game back in my hands - I can play my way, and with the developer tools, change what I don't like. And they are really focused on creating a solid foundation where the player comes first - not whatever their newest brainchild is. Which is smart, because players are their customers - and happy players = more $$$.

Am likewise thinking that TS2 is a new engine than 1. The game itself is evidence as it looks much better and is capable of doing more than the first one could. It is true 3D, not 4 angle isometric. The sims themselves are much improved, the means of making them much different. It's as much of a revolution in gaming as the original one was. It is, though, faithful to Will Wright's vision.

    @Oldeseadogge @WildIrishBanshee

What Jake (and I) are referring to is the core gameplay engine (AI systems, need management, social systems, etc.) Of course, Sims 2 had a brand new 3D graphics system.

Think it’s important to remember that starting from scratch with a new code base can cause both advancements and regressions in terms of how the game “feels” to play compared to the previous versions.

But does 'on top of' mean the same engine? I have both games, have played both extensively, and the difference is like night and day. It is quite possible for different engines to be able to use the same code/computer language, according to computer science courses I took way back in undergraduate days in another century. This requires research, not relying on memories.

Went hunting. According to The Sims Wiki (copy pasted): The Sims series utilizes a new, in-house game engine for each base game, with expansion packs and stuff packs being built on the same engine for that specific game. For example, The Sims 2 introduced a 3D engine with visual and technical advances over its predecessor, while its sequel, The Sims 3, brought in a newer version of the engine that incorporated further visual enhancements with a fully fledged texture streaming solution to accommodate the open world.

The full article is lengthy and makes for interesting reading.

For me, the visual clincher is that TS2 is fully 3D, while TS1 is not. His comment suggests two things. That both engines use the same computer language, so the coding would be similar if not identical for the same functions. That the new engine might have been developed from the earlier one, expanded and improved to handle the increased complexity and demands of the new game. Common foundation but still a different engine.

Not a surprise because when you change the programming language, the whole source code must be rewritten

The Sims (2000), The Sims Online and The Sims 2 used C++/SimAntics (PC)
    The Sims 3 used Microsoft C# (PC/Mac)
The Sims 4 uses Python (PC/Mac/Console)

The Sims Project Rene based on Unreal Engine 5 could keep using Python or like Fortnite could use Epic Verse. (PC/Mac/Console/Mobile)

Both Rene and LBY are using UE5, which I think is a great thing!

LBY will not have any character voices. Just SFX. Sound effects.

    Could not post link. NSFW.

So like Animal Crossing sounds. I'm okay with that.

I'm fine with Rene not having this conversation feature. Instead, I want a return to the interests-based conversation being shown in chat bubble icons. I want different sims to not get along. I always felt that Sims 4 it's such a sandbox that you can be best friends and marry any single Sim. There is no conflict or tension, which made the game of little interest to me.

There's a lot of potential to further expand the interest system. I really like how every sim was born with random interests...it meant as a wants-based player, I could use the interests as a way to guide their career path, skills, and other life choices.

I feel like Paradox is a shady company so I don't have any faith in them to make a sims like game. They really don't care about their customers they don't make an effort to communicate with their customers. Regardless I still love their games but Life By You I really don't have the faith they will follow through and make a game everyone would want to play. They could also just abandon it like some other games their company publishes. Like Empire Of Sin for example.
