With the sims 4 almost in its 7th year, and the various rumors floating around, the sims 5 is most likely coming in the next year or so. While the sims 4 was still successful financially, many fans were disappointed with the lack of features at launch and shallow gameplay.

Below is a list of 10 features that would help the sims 5 and 10 missteps that should be avoided to ensure the game is loved by more.

1. Bring back aspiration meter, wants and fears

One of the best features of the sims 2 was
The aspiration bar and how wants and fears tied into it. The aspiration bar enhanced gameplay allowing sims to become upset and troubled, worrying more and occasionally acting out if the bar was low and colored red. High aspiration bar on the other hand lead to increased moods. Trying to keep the aspiration bar in the neutral green zone or above by fulfilling wants and avoiding fears lead to more varying gameplay and was a fun storytelling tool.

1. Avoid lack of core features

The sims 4 was lacking a lot of basic features at its start such as ghosts, pools, toddlers, family trees and more. While these all got added for free later, The sims 5 should not follow suit and be half baked on initial release.

2. Have sims react to their environment and other sims more.

Another great thing in the sims 2 that almost entirely disappeared in the other sims games was sims reacting to others. For example, sims would do a p.u animation and hold their noses if other sims had low hygiene. They would cheer or boo sims playing piano depending on the piano players creativity skill, and would do disgusted or flirty reactions when passing sims they either had bad or good chemistry with. The sims 5 should once again bring back more reaction animations as they make sims feel more alive.

2. Avoid lack luster expansion packs

Another big flaw with the sims 4 was that many of the expansion packs felt like they didn’t add much gameplay. While there were certainly stand outs such as parenthood and seasons, other eps like island living had little content besides the new world and the activities associated with it

3. make sims more unique.

While each sims game has features that make sims feel unique, it never quite worked out. The sims 2 did the best job, with interests, personality points having big impact on sims, and eventually hobbies. The sims 3 added traits, which while not as expansive, could be really unique and make sims do interesting things. The sims 4 made traits more shallow, but eventually added likes and dislikes, affecting autonomy.
The sims 5 needs to taste it a step further and have a combination of all of these systems to truly make sims unique. Combining interests with traits, likes and dislikes and having all these things affect autonomy how sims react, and sims opinions of each other would be a massive step in the right direction.

3. Avoid ability to not edit neighborhoods

While the sims 4 has some nice neighborhoods in terms of looks, the ability to not edit it in any way is frustrating. You can’t place down more lots not can you put object in the community areas. The sims 5 needs to change this.

4. Have the world be open or semi-open

Games have come a long way since the sims 3, and open world games like red dead 2 prove that it is possible to have lots of npcs and a world that feels alive without the need or loading screens. The sims 5 needs to bring back open world or at least have a semi-open world, if that allows for less texture loading and lag.

4. Avoid cluttered menus and differently named interactions that do the same thing.

Another thing that the sims 4 does terribly is the constant talk interactions with the same animation but different names. This leads to cluttered menus and are uninteresting to look at and make for boring pictures. To fix this sims 5 should have most interactions have unique animations and have one dedicated chat interaction like sims 2 with various animations

5. Show don’t tell

Another flaw that began in the sims 3 was the sims team started telling through buffs not showing through animations. Buffs can still be in the game but they should be less of them and they should have a greater impact on sims than just making them happy or sad (for example temporarily changing skilling rate, change autonomy, etc). Some buffs could even have animations associated with it [e.g sims who have a negative buff from the death of a loved one would occasionally cry, even if they are not currently sad].

5. Avoid sims constantly changing emotions and nicely decorated buffs

While emotions were an inter idea they were implemented poorly. Sims are always happy and are constantly changing emotions when entering rooms talking etc. Mods like meaningful stories by roburky help by requiring sims to have more than +1 in a emotion before sims switch, having lingering buffs for emotions, and having uncomfortable emotion boost other negative emotions. If the sims 5 has emotions they should follow the example of meaningful stories mod and have sims not constantly switching emotions. Especially during big moments in life.

6. Bring back randomness, chance and animation variety.

One of the great things in the sims 2 and 3 that has disappeared a lot in the sims 4 is randomness and chance events. Burglars, fires, electrocution, chance card outcomes, and even acceptance of interactions were more fun in those games because there was a random element. Life is not always predictable and random events can spice up the game. Another small feature in the sims 2 that should return is certain interactions like talking, and make out having multiple animations which were varied to keep those interactions interesting.

6. Avoid lack of danger (I.e putting on the kid gloves).

The sims is a T rated game but over time it has felt much less dangerous and adult oriented. While I understand that the sims is not a place for super dark themes and similar content, I felt that the sims 3 and especially 2 felt like the game was more mature and true to life. Fires could kill sims if you weren’t careful, cow plants wouldn’t always spare sims the first time with the game giving you a warning, and sims could get angry at each other and hold grudges. The romance was also suggestive with sims being more into the kisses and flirting (but mere going too far). The sims 5 needs to be more mature again in order to keep the game interesting, and allow the game to dive into more themes.

7. Bring back chemistry from the start.

Another great feature in the sims 3 and especially 2 was sim chemistry. Sims didn’t find all other sims attractive and would get along better romantically with other sims who shared similar personality, or who had traits that they found attractive (e.g red hair and fit). On the other hand sims who had a turn-off to another si or who had personalities that didn’t match would find it harder to date that sim. This should definitely make a comeback in the sims 5 because in real life, not all people find others attractive. Furthermore a limited form of chemistry (I.e comparing personality/traits/interests and not turn-ons and turn-offs) could be used tor relationship in general so sims would have a harder time making friends with people who were vastly different than them.

7. Avoid sims almost always being happy and nice to all despite traits or emotions.

Another big flaw in the sims 4 is that sims are always happy and almost here perform mean interactions despite what traits they have. While this can be somewhat alleviated by mods, the sims 5 needs to fix this to make relationships more dynamic and fun. One way to help would be to bring back interest so sims would not always find talking with other pleasant. Furthermore sims could make more interactions have rejection states if other sims are not in a good mood or don’t know the other well enough (like in the sims 2 how many sims reject hugs and tickles with low relationship). They could also bring back furiousness and grudges to help make relationship even more fun and varied.

8. Ensure lots of customization and bring back Create a style tool (Cast)

Customization has always been an important aspect of the sims and the sims 5 should remember this. Throughout the sims series we have had customization of radio songs, tv videos, custom paintings, age length customization, lot traits, create a style tool and more. Create a sim also has lots of customization from face and body sculpting to assigning individual hair per outfits. Two customization features that could really benefit the sims 5 is enabling clothes, hair, and other CAS items for random use by townies/npc sims. Another big customization feature the sims 5 needs is the ability to make interaction between sims and with objects either autonomous or non autonomous . This could easily be done by hiding the pie menu behind a shift + left mouse button click.

8. Avoid endless party content and only focusing on Young adults.

Since the sims 3 the sims has been more focused on young adults giving teens, children, and toddlers less to do until certain expansions come out such as generations and parenthood. Sims 4 was especially guilty of having a party theme with the exclusion of toddlers for almost 3 years. Sims 5 should avoid this to cater to a wider audience.

9. Ensure unique gameplay for all age groups

In life, people act differently depending on age and they are more likely to do certain things. The sims 2 was pretty good at this giving unique play interactions between sim kids, having teenagers get zits, and more. The sims 5 needs to ensure that every life stage has some unique gameplay to make it interesting even at launch.

9. Avoid lots of bugs and lag

Most games have some bugs and that is okay, because not everyone will even experience them. The sims has always been notorious for having lots of bugs both big and small and patches that both fix bugs and introduce new ones. Sims 5 should at least avoid any big or game breaking bugs at launch. Furthermore the sims 5 needs to optimized better so that it doesn’t lag so much. The sims 3 was porky optimized and the sims 4 still has simulation lag since city living came out. Even the sims 2 will lag on bigger community lots. If games like red dead redemption 2 can run without lag, the sims 5 should be able to run at least 60fps with a decent computer.

10. Have a more dynamic town with a sim calendar and events.

While the sims still mostly has a monopoly on that type of simulation games, various farm games have been adding simulation elements such as dates, making friends, decorating with furniture and more. One thing these farming simulators do better is have an in game calendar with town events. This makes the town feel more alive and can add spice to the your sim routine. The sims 4 eventually added a calendar with seasons which would tell your sims when holidays were, but this could be further expanded in the sims 5. They could save the holiday system for seasons if they so desire but could add the sims 3 style festivals on certain days as well as sales and shortages for grocery stores and other similar community lots.
In fact the sims should bring back features like buying groceries and books at certain public lots as it adds more reason to leave the house. They could also have occasional pop-up markets like farmers market , flea market, art shows, and concerts

10. Avoid catering the game to a small demographic.

Let’s face it. The sims has changed since its origins in 2000. While originally the game featured staples in life with the occasional modern influences, the game over time has become more geared towards teens and young adults, and modern influences take center stage, sometimes even over basic staples of life such as toddlerhood or romantic chemistry. The sims.has a wide fan base, and while it is okay to make stuff for their primary target (teens and young adults), they should not forget the older simmers.

For me, most important is traits which actually do something, an option for story progression, and open world (if possible without glitches)

Number 11, Don't create an online game then turn it into a full single player experience in one year. Just please don't. Based on articles we see The Sims 4 began development after The Sims 3 launched. Can you imagine if instead of EA mandating maxis to make an online game they let maxis do their own thing and make the game single player from the start? At this point, even if I love the game, I cannot deny that what EA did to the developers was unacceptable.

Have Sims 5 be more like Sims 1, Sims 2 and Sims 3.

    Avoid:

    Neighborhoods having pointless decorative buildings,

Having bars plunked into every new world that's created. It gets annoying after a while, and it doesn't add any new gameplay.

Spawning townies every 3 seconds. There's no reason to spawn new townies every 3 seconds.

Having Sims take 90 minutes to eat. There's no reason why Sims should look at their forks or stare into space while eating.

    >

    Fantastic list!
