Loot Boxes in Sims 5

As much as I'd love a casino in Sims 4, I don't want Sims 5 to be loot box based or a gatcha game.

Yes, we can criticize Sims 4 and say buying packs has been a gamble of quality, but that's still a far cry from the design most games are using today.

This is headline news about EA using loot Boxes in FIFA that was in my country today: https://www.cbc.ca/news/gopublic/fifa21-loot-boxes-electronic-arts-1.5996912

I try to stay away from gatcha games because I feel they are of lower quality, are premium dependent and very addictive to stealing your money.

I do play Mario Kart Tour but I only pull the tour pipes when I have over 450 rubies and can clear the pipes. I do play Animal Crossing Pocket Camp but will not spend leaf tickets on fortune cookies. And both games have adequate means to earn rubies/lead tickets for free within the game.

Is anyone else concerned about this? If EA is doing this with their other games, what happens if this is what Sims 5 becomes?

Relax. TS3 had loot boxes (they were called "Goodie Boxes") and everything worked out just fine. I don't remember people boycotting the game because of that.

It's not like they can put a whole expansion pack in a loot box. Personally I don't mind getting CAS and B/B items through loot boxes. It can be fun ;)

It has always been a bit of a nightmare scenario for me that EA will turn the sims into FIFA. Luckily it doesn't look like this has been the case, they seem to be satisfied with making packs for the sims 4 and I hope that this will be the case for the sims 5.

Thankfully there are several countries that are starting to classify loot boxes as gambling and hopefully more will do it. Even if there are no money involved it is very dangerous to introduce kids and teens to gambling at such a young age. EA tries to defend it though, with silly excuses that it adds to gameplay or that it's not gambling, it's "surprise mechanics".

I hope that all countries will eventually classify loot boxes in games as gamling, then EA will have no choice but to remove it from games that doesn't have an 18+ age rating.

They were from TS3 store. You would buy a box for 300, 900, or 1500 SimPoints and you would get random items that were worth at least what you said for. Pretty good way to save some money :D

Things working out fine in Sims 3 is no indication things will work out at all in any iteration of Sims 5.

Especially considering what they have us paying for Sims Kits.

Yeah I often read articles about how EA is horrible for making expansions that have a price and then I compare it to what I see in MMOs or Mobile games and it feels like folks in a park complaining about leashing laws and long lines for the espresso bar while just outside there are wars, homeless camps, plagues, and alien invasions...

If anyone thing paying for some DLC is bad, just look over the golden fences at what's going on 'out there'...

Loot boxes are a plague on modern gaming. It's like having Las Vegas run the church donation basket. For being new to Sims 4 it's refreshing to be able to know what I'm buying before I buy it again...
I don't use Discord because it doesn't support multiple accounts and I don't need folks at work wondering what I'm doing even on my own time. Until Discord catches up with every single other voice / video conferencing system, I limit where I use it:

Exactly! $5 for a kit is being criticized, and everyone keeps saying there's no hope for Sims 4 let's go to Sims 5. But what happens if Sims 5 is $10 for two loot box pulls that *might* get you an ice cream maker but will likely get you the same t-shirt/chair/wall decal you've had before?

Exactly why I don't get the DLC complaints. It's nothing compared to other games. I Play roblox for example,a gamed aimed mostly at little kids and the loot boxes and in game money for every little nonsensical thing is out of this world. They even delete paid items or clothes from your account with no refund or explinations. It happened to my niece many times. It's pretty outrageous to me.
And this is considered normal standard apparantly.
Heck, one game in roblox asks for 300 real life money for a super ingame gun I'm like 😱😱😱😱
And I have seen people using the gun.... 200 dollars for certain roblox faces....

All this to say sims 4 looks pretty gosh darn good to me😅😅 and for the people who think they can change sims 4 or 5 to go back to the "no DLC or loot days" it's not gonna happen. Companies are making too much and people are paying really big money for these little items. This practice is here to stay. I don't play games like I use to for this reason. Only sims 4 mainly.

More importantly, gambling can be addictive.

And just because it's somewhat more fairly priced doesn't change the fact it's gambling.

But it wasn't fun when I fell for a few of those loot boxes in TS3 and saw I already had the content. lol :/

I have a abhorrent distaste for lootboxes. I don't mind the pricing of things generally, even if things are overpriced at times, but I have to know what I'm buying. Random grabbags of "maybe fun, maybe not" are something I have no interest....nay, negative interest...in. Unless they're free then of course that's okay.
It's kind of sad that I have to point out that anything I say is only just my opinion and may be a different one from someone else.

@Babykittyjade Yes, the Sims 4 ranked 9th in the list of games with most expensive DLC. It ranked 9th in the whole world. So it's nothing compared to other games, it's actually worse.

The Goodie Boxes didn't last though which meant it wasn't popular enough to make EA any money.

I like their Make-A-Deal myself. You press the button and they present you with a number of items that you don't have in your collection for a discounted price (as much as 40%!). You have an hour to decide to buy it or not. If you buy it, you can then press the button for another group of stuff you don't have yet. This goes on for up to 5 times per day if you hadn't bought any of them, or more times if you actually bought any.

I agree with the others who posted that buying anything without knowing what you got is a deal-breaker - I think that's why the Goodie Boxes didn't so well.

I guess I'm just looking at it differently. Yes it has tons of DLC (like all sims games) it's expensive for all of it but the sims was never about having or needing all DLC. The basegame should be fun and the DLC are optional additions. A few should be enough.
But there is no forcing involved for anyone to have every single DLC. Unless someone just does not enjoy ts4 as a whole no one should be feeling obligated to have every single pack for enjoyment because if you don't enjoy the gameplay in general 700+ DLC will not make it better for that person.

Other games in my personal experience are more like "play to win" or charging for every single mundane thing like a gun, a shirt, a gem, etc. And before you know it you spent tons of money on something that most people don't play as long as the sims. The loot boxes in many games are rediculous. I've seen games that want you to pay rediculous amounts for a prize that you don't even know what it is.

This is subjective to each individual but I personally feel I get my moneys worth with I buy a ts4 pack full price. Else I would wait for a sale or not buy it at all. And the sims is unique in the way that it's the type of game you really never stop playing like many others. Because the creativity, stories, family, saves etc are only limited by your imagination. So when I paid 40 for ecoliving a year ago, I'm still using it and many elements of it, having fun with it, creating stories around it a year later. Did I need it? No. I just wanted it and I'm going to enjoy it for years to come. Now that's what I called a well spent 40 dollars for DLC😎😎

Not 200 something dollars for one roblox gun....
    It's just not comparable.

@Babykittyjade No game forces you to buy DLC, expect if it's an EA game lol. But one example I can think of right now with the SIms 4 is the worlds. The team said, they made the worlds so small, so that when DLC gets released people can put more and more worlds in their game.
That is basically telling them "buy DLC or you will have to deal with having no lots to build on". Also a lot of basic life simulation features are included in DLC and there is even DLC for DLC which is crazy.
Yes nobody forces you but no it's not fun to not own DLC in the Sims 4.

I don't know what games you play but most of the best single-player games do not require or even have much DLC at all. Of course if you are playing free-to-play online games like Roblox there will be a lot of DLC, that's the whole microtransaction system people don't want the Sims 5 to have. Play to win games are only common in free to play MMOs. Not normal single-player games. These rarely have any DLC and it's usually very very cheap and optional.
Also how long you play the game is more of a subjective thing, it doesn't determine a price. It only determines your opinion.

The Sims 4 is an expensive single-player game and should be compared with similar games. So roblox and stuff are not optimal for this comparison.

It seems to me if people had just paid EA that monthly fee for the last seven years, TS4 would have come out cheaper and people wouldn't be struggling for space on their pcs. What was that fee $4.99? per month to play all the packs in TS4? 40+ packs and still going seems like loot boxes to me. AKA 9th in the world for most expensive DLC out of millions and millions of microtransactional games. I can believe it.

I'll be very surprised if the use of loot boxes is still as prevalent by the time S5 is released. I can see them becoming increasingly regulated by 2025 and therefore less attractive to EA.

Most people are believing TS5 will be announced at EA Play this year. Which means it might come out next year. Not many believe TS5 won't be out by 2025 so, I think loot boxes are still very much something EA will continue to like until those regulations 'might' kick in in 2025. No one thinks E3 will announce TS5 but maybe at EA Play this summer.
