Which folders to play on different computer?

My computer seems to be taking its last gasp tonight. Which folders are critical to save before it’s too late, so I can play the same save on a new computer? Mods, Tray, Saves, anything else? Thanks!

You will be save if you just take your whole ea folder from your documents. Then it has all your settings, basically your whole game as is.

    Thanks for your reply. :)

I started to do that, but the transfer would have taken three hours, and I don’t think my laptop could have stayed on that long. It keeps shutting down, even though it’s plugged in. Could have something to do with its unfortunate flight recently. :) Maybe I’ll do the whole folder, but a subfolder at a time, as long as it holds out.

I’ve been considering buying a new one for about six months now anyway.

When I got my new PC I just transferred the saves folder and the mods folder, just booted up the game after that and it was all there from my old pc.

If I recall correctly, you play on a mac right? If you get another Mac, you use this program, migration assistant, to move stuff to your new Mac without losing anything. That’s what I did when I got my new Mac a few months ago and my sims saves didn’t lose anything, including all my CC.

I think if you just copy the whole electronics arts folder to an external hard drive or the cloud though and put an exact copy on your new computer, that should work too. I’d just copy the whole folder to be safe so you can pick up where you left off!

If you took any screenshots or video you want to keep, you'll need those too.

Oh my. I would save your Saves, Tray and Screenshots/videos to a flash drive. I hope you were able to save them. You have some really good stuff in your game.

Thanks so much for your help, everyone! My new computer should be here in four days, so if I can survive the Sims withdrawal until then, we’ll see what happens in the transfer. My current laptop isn’t working well enough to even boot The Sims at this point, but I did manage to transfer Trays, Saves, Mods, and Screenshots to an external drive. I’ll also use Migration Assistant if my dying laptop will let me. Fingers crossed!

I really hope you can save your gameplay, I know you’ve put a lot of work into building your world! My entire screen broke when I had to replace my laptop a few months ago but luckily it was just the display so I could move everything to my new computer. I was so worried that I’d have to start playing the sims from scratch though

Might be better to leave off using your laptop and use the new one to transfer anything to itself before and in case the hard drive fails. Mine just crashed and died playing Sims 3. I lost everything.

i had to change computers last year too because my laptop died but i forgot to copy tray folder which had my gallery library so that didn't quite go as planned

copied saves only so i have like my main saves working should i want to go back (didnt use mods)

but im just kept wondering what i had in my library before

unlikely it would have been anything mega cool though given i had not wanted to play with those or share

^ also found this old thread which might be useful (or just reassuring youve got your right folders in right places)

oh and also dont be alarmed if you cant find the folders to transfer your files into you have to run the game once and create random save for the folders to show up so you can transfer stuff

Mod and Save data most important.

And your Tray. Unless you don't care about your Library.

Yup, Saves & Tray are the 2 most important. When I backup my Sims 4 folders I also backup my Screenshots folder as I take a lot and it would be a pity to lose them

The mods folder can be reconstructed, although if you have multiple GB of CC its probably easiest to copy it across.

    Oh, no! That's so terrible!

I'm happy to say that everything transferred fine except for my Library. I have no idea why I lost that. I tried troubleshooting, but it just wasn't meant to be. But all my played Sims and world lots seem to be fine, thankfully! :)

Don't forget your important documents as well! Sims 4 is not so important as those! <3
