Diagonal Walls Longer?

What I've noticed quite a bit, even while playing an apartment last night, is how diagonal walls are longer than either straight up and down walls. For example, for the walls surrounding the lift next to the Hakim apartment, the diagonal wall looks like it is 2-tiles wide even though it is only 1. Another time, I tried to build an angular multi-storey house on the 50x50 beach lot in Sulani and doing a 6x6 room at 45-degree angles made it resemble more of a 8x8 or even 10x10 room.

Yes, they are. And the windows and doors placed along diagonal walls are wider, too. It's especially noticeable on fence gates. All of a sudden, single-square gates take up the length of two squares on a diagonal gate. Double gates (normally two squares) suddenly take up three squares' worth.

If you have a 1x1 square, the diagonal is going to be around 1.41 units. So that sounds about right

Correct. Corner to corner distance through the middle of a square will always be slightly longer than the sides.

The reason we can build a hexagonal or octagonal room in real life with all the walls the same length is that in real life we are not restricted to walls that fit perfectly on a square grid. Because the Sims build mode restricts walls to this square grid, we run into the problem of the diagonal line of a square being longer than the sides. The problem could be solved if sims build mode did not use a grid.
