My Problem with The Sims Spark'd

Comments

Well in that case there is also a problem with the game.
Men are heavily underrepresented: No body hair? No urinals?
Yet they can get pregnant from an alien...
    That must be really painful...

Um.... That's a bit of a nsfw and tmi concern...
Occultism in Sims is family-friendly and should not be watered down to cater to realism players

Well...I didn’t put male pregnancy in the game.
Or do you mean speaking openly about the lack of body hair and urinals in TS4 is NSFW? ;)

Game fanbase is mostly female. Would show based on mostly male activity had one female everyone would act like it's a holy cow of representation. But the moment females have something for themselves (and not because they shut down males, but because they're intrested in it more than males) people act like it almost criminal. What is painful? Most of the shows, especially old ones, have like one female for all the main cast.

    Oh do they now? ;)

In another thread I already mentioned that every sim, regardless of gender, needs to have a Body Hair option.
I left the ladies out in this one (my apologies) because @WolfNate mentioned there are not enough boys on the show.
So I butted in as per usual, to comment that there are not even enough things in the game to represent men. Followed by a lame joke.
As a man trying to create your simself or other natural looking guys can be a struggle in the vanilla game. It means you rely heavily on cc.
I’ve never been a genius at biology, but as far as I understand (due to hormones I believe) men also tend to grow a bit more chest hair than the ladies...
I hope I’m not going NSFW with this...and I definitely don’t mean to go OT. :#

@WolfNate Pixelade already mentioned that he declined and I'm guessing James Turner was asked too but also declined. I think they couldn't find any other "popular" male Sims Gamers 'cause there aren't a lot of them.

I want game to have body hair and urinals. Not a lot of content for younger male Sims too. Game really needs more sports too which is ironic since EA is known for selling sports games, you would think the Sims 4 would have more sports by now. Girls want content like this too for their Sims. Not like 100 baby challenges are only using female Sims.

There are actually quite a number on Twitch and Youtube. CaptainSauce is very popular. One of the male Simmers I met on forums is streaming now and I am so proud of them. I noticed they tend not to pick a lot of guys for the game changer program, so could be why they were only picking from that limited pool of people for the first season being that most are women.

Is he a GameChanger though? Because I do think they prioritized GameChangers first. Or maybe people like CaptainSauce and GrayStillPlays declined since they like playng other game too and being on a TV show just for The Sims is different than playing the game on your channel every now and then.
I don't know any Twitchers so I can't answer that.

According to the New York Times article on Sparked Challenges, the main fan base consists of young lesbians. Might be the reason why they selected so few male game changers to participate.

I follow enough of the contestants that I believe they were chosen on merit (Plumbella, Steph0, SimLicy, EnglishSimmer, Dr. Gluon, Doctor Ashley) and I can see how great Simproved is clearly with those builds. I know there had been some criticism about Kelsey being a judge since she’s newer to the scene. I have to honestly say that I think she is a perfect judge. She has done a really good job keeping her 100 baby challenge interesting. It wasn’t really a style I normally watch, I think she does really well with younger people and I’m 37. So I understand why some people wouldn’t be fans of hers but I do think she does great improv with the game just like they’re challenging simmers to do.

I really wasn’t sure I would like the show, but I did like it, truly it was fun to watch and recognize half of the faces. Some of it was really funny. This wasn’t overdramatized like TLC would do... just my thoughts on it.

@babajayne well my problem was not the quality of the show itself. The problem is the thing I mentioned above. If the show is good or not it is irrelevant, at least to me because I am not going to support it based on its ideas and concept.

The New York Times is really going downhill fast from what I have been reading lately. How did the NYT know that/if the females were lesbians, or if they were at all? Did it matter if they were (or if they weren't)? Did Donald Trump do the review or a bored gameplayer of Grand theft Auto 5? We must be told (I don't subscribe myself) :D

I've just watched on Buzzfeed. I just hope they show more of the building, CAS and creating the stories next time. There was too much of the game-changers and their emotions for my liking. I'm not really interested in them as I don't watch many game-changer videos. I really don't think the team element works for me. The males looked a bit overwhelmed by the females! Kudos to them having a go though!

As a Pilot show it was ok. Maybe it could be a bit slower and less frenetic and "Got Talent" in future episodes and a table for the judging panel? They might look more comfortable behind one. The whole show looked like it was taking place in an EA building entrance hall!

I did watch through to the end though and enjoyed it. It needs a lot of work to make it less frenetic, as I said before but it could be a good show in time if we get some new Simmers playing. This lot were too worried about losing their fans I thought.

    Just my opinion though. <3

I'm guessing that the sub-themes help create baseline criteria for judging submissions. It's easier to judge how different people tackle similar types of venues, sims, and related stories than it is to judge a bunch of submissions that differ wildly. A lot of qualitative evaluation is comparative and comparison is usually more effective when you start with like objects and then assess how they differ in terms of technique, expression, etc.

However, the "rubric" for judging submissions is extremely vague. I'm a teacher in an arts discipline so I get that it can be difficult to quantify qualitative factors like "creativity" and "originality." But there are ways to make the judging criteria more robust without stifling expression.

They interviewed Lindsey Pearson, I think she supplied the information.

Maybe you could handle being on a show like that, but I definitely couldn’t and I think Game Changers are in a unique position to do well under those conditions. They’ve most likely been to Sim Camp before and have been under pressure to record footage in a few hours to share with their followers. They are familiar with being on camera to some extent. It wouldn’t be a great show if all the teams had unfinished projects in the end. I also think part of the appeal for me, personally was that many of the contestants were familiar to me and I wanted to see what they would do. So fine enough IMO to gauge interest with Game Changers, people that EA feels they can trust already, and may draw an audience. But if they do have another season it would be nice to incorporate some new unknowns.

I don't watch the show, so, I can't comment much on it, but...

Though this is a good effort from EA by making the in-game challenge , what's wrong with people who's uploading & sharing stuffs that are not even meeting the submission criteria? The "abuse" is so intolerable and no one even removes them from the gallery yet. Some even sharing a toddler wedding where it clearly says that it should be YA and above. Some even shared an empty houses that are not even theirs to begin with.

@xamira99 there's another thread for discussing the in-game challenge.

@babajayne agree I could never compete on a television show. I also like seeing familiars for the first season and then less well known simmers for the next season.

After watching the show, I was not at all surprised that it is exactly what I thought it would be. I’m really happy for those who enjoy the show.
I certainly did not. This fast paced editing doesn’t cut it for me and never has. I couldn’t keep up with was going on, although I know that’s the whole point of the show.

In future episodes you won’t see any more building, CAS and creating stories than you did in the pilot. It’s a reality show. What you will see is a multitude of medium shots and close ups of dramatic expressions and emotions on the faces of both participants and judges, supported by an even more dramatic soundtrack. This show can’t be for an audience who is interested in Sims4 creations, this is made for an audience who is interested in drama and sensationalism. That’s all it is and that’s all it ever will be.

    But that is my opinion.

The gallery itself is a cesspool, I'm not surprised they just decided to tack something on top of the existing framework and call it good enough, that's what is happening with the game. The core (emotions/traits) is obviously broken but eh, let's just add more and never fix it.

I think one purpose of the show is to pique the interest of those who are not as familiar with the game as we are. You're not going to see hour long builds but just maybe you'll be interested enough to check out what the contestants normally do in their build videos and Let's Plays.
