The moment when they do put cars in the game, but as decorative items  "There's your car, now shut up, we didn't say it would be functional"

Cars would be awesome!! but then we need garages :|

Garages will most likely be included on the same day we get cars.

Problem will be that too many lots are so small, there won't be room for any garage. But street parking (or inventory parking) will do.

Just because there are cars, it doesn't mean that every sim has to have a car, just like in real life.

Like why would you ever give cars to the San Myshuno sims? Or anyone living in the old town area of Windenburg.

In previous iterations, I've mostly given cars either to my wealthy sims, or to... let us say... rural sims with a beat-up old car. Or for the mechanically inclined sims in TS2, a car to repair.

Why wouldn't San Myshuno or Winderburg residents own a liberated car? City people do have cars and so do people living in ancient houses.

I lived in downtown areas of big cities (in different states and even countries) for more than twenty years, and can count on one hand the number of people I ever met who owned or regularly drove a car. Most people rely on public transportation and ride sharing.

There's nothing to say you can't give your sims in cities a car, I'm just saying I personally wouldn't, because it would not be realistic in my experience.

In my observation, it depends heavily on the extent of the public transportation network. Speaking only of select US cities, cars are more or less unnecessary in cities like New York or Chicago (unless you're going out to Suburban Cook County from Chicago, and even that has a pretty decent network of busses) while I've generally been of the impression that Miami and Los Angeles have more drivers, comparatively, though you can still get by without one easily enough.

Yeah, that's very true (although my friends in LA also don't drive). My original point, though, is that not every sim would necessarily want or need a car, and I was giving of examples of places where I personally would not give cars to most of the sims.

I think that's a neat idea. New traits for Sims that are averse to cars or want nothing more than a new ride.

It could also mesh well with EL, introducing new NAPs for car-free neighborhoods and an impact on the footprint, like how using the rocket makes it go industrial, using cars could do the same thing.

Ooh, that would be awesome to have a gameplay way to opt out of cars if desired.

Ooh Be Gah!! Whipna Choba-Dog? Whipna Choba-Dog!!

Pretty much, that's the way it is already. There's a handful of different cars and trucks that are used as decorative objects that show up with the "BuyDebugMode" and "ShowLiveEditObjects" cheats are on, and are already used as "set dressing" in most worlds. I've used them to make parking lots, but there's no need going to all that trouble to end up with something that just takes up space.

Now, there have been mods that allow these cars to sort of be drivable, but they never seem to work.

I'd love to have cars for the tinkering and upgrading aspect, but am afraid they'll be just another bat/broom teleport thing.

Cars would require a major overhaul. First, there are the fx cars and cable cars zipping around everyhwere. I have lots of screenshots of them "running over" pedestrians (that's when the bandages come in handy). For real cars to not suffer the same fate, all the fx vehicles would have to get overhauled. Sims, including pets, would need to be made aware of the new cars and the new cars of sims and pets.

Next is recognizing roads as routeable territory. Whenever I try to keep my bicycle and motorbike (recolored bicycles) driving sims on a road, they route back to the sidewalk.

I can only imagine what nightmare that is/was/would be. Cars being in the works for a year sounds about right!

The game needed an overhaul to get toddlers and we got them.

Adding a life stage is nowhere near as complicated as overhauling every single neighborhood to make them car friendly. Brindleton Bay has land locked houses that aren't even near roads. Roads would have to be made pathable like the sidewalks so that Sims would drive on them - this would require them to renovate them completely from purely cosmetic props in neighborhoods to actual usable parts of the world. Then there's travel altogether. Travel as it is now either involves Sims walking to the edge of the lot and disappearing, or just cutting straight to the destination screen. I'm not sure what people would expect for cars. Like do you want your Sim to get in the car, get on the road, then drive to the edge of your entire neighborhood area where you'll then cut to the destination screen? I can get using cars to travel within the same neighborhood, they'd operate like bikes in that sense, but for long distance traveling like going to San Myshuno, it'd just waste a lot more time than the current travel methods. Overall, implementing cars in TS4 will take a pretty massive overhaul to all of the worlds in order to function how people will expect them to function. This isn't TS2 where cars were already built into the game from the get-go. This isn't TS3 where neighborhoods are fully open and explorable and cars make sense. This is TS4, where nothing at all is optimized for road travel.

Yes its a huge overhauled requirement to implement car routing etc... in the game, but for some of the worlds, such as Brindleton Bay, according to the sims logic, they could simply get in the car, car being teleport to the nearest road and than take off... That would work too. Or they could had some parking spots outside the lot where you can park your car into. There is side road possibility parking spots in that specific world, and if you noticed, all the worlds after that came with pre-existing parking lot in front of lots, or simply, there are roads nearby lots. And I think in snowy escape the top neighborhood is not having roads, than they could get in the car, on their lot, and disappear. That is a bit lame, but only for one neighbothood, its kind of ok to me, especially since, just the realism that it brings for building in a game, and also, are you not all tired of those fake/cartoony/non functionnal cars in the game right now. I imagine them being way better if they released such a feature. That could serve as a new teaching lesson for teenagers and also a woohoo spots... a mechanic/build/mod skill for cars and making one on your own. Also, not just for the sake of cars, but, trucks, limo, helicopter, school bus, firefighter truck...

The car from the store in TS3 added animations while sims were in it.

I wonder if Sims will have to learn to drive? Maybe that's what is taking the Devs so long; adding a new skill.
Prepping a list of mods to add after Infants are placed into the game. Because real life isn't 'nice'.

generic looking cars, vans, lorries, the occasional bus of different shapes and sizes in the sims syle.

Estate, Saloon, Supermini, Cabriolet... the usual mix of car. have several different shape of car in each category to make it look like there is choice options from car dealerships in the sims world.

Microvans, MPV's, Panel Van, full size van for families to sims in specialist jobs like electricians, boiler repairs, builders and so forth. again different shapes and sizes for these different types of vehicles to again show a range of options for sims.

I don't know how the Americans come across with their vehicle types but i'm assuming there are equivalents to the British classification of vehicles as well. Also not to forget those in other blocs and countries that have their own unique style of vehicle to add to the immersion value of each world.

I would so love some motor home cars or trailers that I can decorate the inside of and have my Sims live in them.

And some nice-looking and not so nice-looking cars to decorate some of my more suspicious-looking backlots.

So much things to do with cars standing still. Talk in them, eat in them (your choice, if your Sim is a car-lover they might prefer the car over a nice table - introducing the Car Lover Trait), woohoo in them, read in them, sleep in them, and try to repair them to increase your handiness/mechanic skill. Children could play on and in them, and parents could scold them. Heck, they could even be used as a wardrobe where you change clothes.

Also, even if they're not used on the roads, I would like if the car you bought would serve as a "meeting point" where your Sims will go when you send them out in the world instead of running around messing the house up during those rare longer loading times (it has, wierdly enough, actually improved despite all the patches and new stuff).

I have to agree there's a very slim chance of getting both cars and bunkbeds in the same pack.

Also, I think you missed my point about Windenburg, which was about one specific neighborhood, not the whole world. It has nothing to do with living in "ancient houses." It's because unlike some of the other sims neighborhoods, the old town area specifically has a walkable, residential feel; I've lived in neighborhoods that feel like that with a central, core shopping area, and again, most people walk everywhere.

Well maybe they could have a spot in a neighbor hood that isn’t feasible for cars where the sim could walk to, to take a subway of bus (rabbit hole), That should be easy enough for them to make.... the same spot could also be a fake neighborhood garage if a person did want to take a car. They can make tables and Bar-B-Que pits for sims and NPC’s to use in the neighborhood. It shouldn’t be hard to add a fake shell in each neighborhood that contains a garage, bus station, and subway ( rabbit hole) and ask which of the 3 you want to take..... kind of like the rabbit hole transportation we already have. A pop up could ask which way you want to travel. They could still keep cars in their inventory. to use where it’s feasible, like they do with boats. It sure would be cool if we could take a boat from Windenburg Island to the mainland. And I’d sure like to be able to swim on the Island snd use the jet ski And fishing boat to fish there.
