How I Fix Personalities using 4 Mods (Picture Heavy)

filipomelfilipomel Posts: 1,693 Member
I'll list the mods I'm using at the top of the thread, I go into detail further down of how exactly I use these mods, the "More CAS Traits" mod specifically:
- More CAS Traits: http://modthesims.info/d/591706/more-cas-traits-for-sims-mod-amp-for-pets.html
- Meaningful Stories: https://roburky.itch.io/sims4-meaningful-stories
- Personality Please: http://modthesims.info/d/594573/have-some-personality-please.html
- Improved Relationships: https://www.patreon.com/posts/improved-29132727

As we patiently await for the personality overhaul of our dreams, I decided to do what anybody would do and install mods to improve personalities, relationships, etc. in The Sims 4. We all remember the iconic personality system Sims 2 has.

101052338_1431729800364336_7695022411497865216_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=NAE6QZoT7VAAX8DLKSk&_nc_ht=scontent.fyto1-1.fna&oh=51b35c44e784aba7f902732847c7d8c5&oe=5EEF5BF7

This varying spectrum of characteristic and behaviours made it possible to create a variety of extremely unique sims, I wonder why they never brought this feature back, in Sims 3 or 4. I keep hoping we'll get a personality system like this in the Sims 4, so much so that I created my own concept of what a similar feature in Sims 4 may look like.

100507846_1431729823697667_3559668392413626368_o.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=UhsBw1lOtPIAX87iYyf&_nc_ht=scontent.fyto1-1.fna&oh=305ae20186b5380130d2f61785bfce50&oe=5EF1855E

Considering all these traits exist within the game, I wondered if there was a way I could use mods that would enable me to add and combine these traits beyond the limited 3 the game normally lets the player pick. I eventually found a mod called 'More CAS Traits for Sims' that does give me this ability, link to download can be found at the top. Using the personality chart in the concept image and the mod, I managed to create a makeshift Sims 2 personality system in Sims 4. This is how I've done it.

Step 1, Plan Your Sims:
This method of applying traits is a bit messy, so to make organization easier, using a piece of paper for notes and the personality chart for reference, combine the various traits, up to four for each sim you wish to create (or however many traits the mod version you downloaded allows for). Don't combine traits with their opposite counterpart, unless that's what you want to do for whatever reason, it's your game. For the sake of this example, I won't be doing that and will be sticking to a maximum of four extra traits.

Step 2, Quirks and Preferences:
The remaining traits not used in the personality chart I categorized into two separate categories, quirks and preferences. These are the traits that will be applied inside of Create a Sim, the personality chart traits will be applied later in game. On your note pad, pick three of the following traits below. Once that's done, you should have picked four personality chart traits, and three quirk/preference traits.

Quirks:
- Perfectionist
- Clumsy
- Erratic
- Evil
- Kleptomaniac
- Squeamish
- Bro
- Non Committal
- Insider
- Paranoid
- Self Absorbed
- Materialistic
- Hates Children
- Jealous
- Child of the Islands
- Child of the Ocean
- Self Assured

Preferences:
- Bookworm
- Geek
- Dance Machine
- Art Lover
- Music Lover
- Foodie
- Cat Lover
- Dog Lover
- Loves Outdoors
- Family Oriented
- Ambitious
- Vegetarian

Step 3, Assemble your Sims:
Once the planning on your note pad is done (or wherever it is you took your notes), begin creating the sim in CAS as you normally would, apply the three quirk/preference traits that you have already picked, or pick three completely different traits from what you originally planned, just don't choose any of the traits shown on the personality chart. Once you finish creating your sims, move them into a lot and continue onto the next step.

A couple more personality examples visualized as concept images:

Step 4, Let There be Personality:
Once the household is loaded up, begin by clicking on a sim of your choosing. If you have the 'More CAS Traits' mod installed, there should be an option called "Cheat Sim Info..." Click that. Then click on "Add Trait," a pop up box with all the in game traits listed will appear, select your desired trait, repeat until your sim has all desired traits. This mod also has the ability to give your sims reward traits, perfect for Parenthood's Character Value traits for all those adults who never had to experience the burden of growing up.

100802118_1431729873697662_7343990078651236352_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=kH-CwRA6tz4AX83hhsn&_nc_ht=scontent.fyto1-2.fna&oh=c19368637eb7a5731e69e07e096ea5ad&oe=5EEFF361

Your Sims trait panel should look something like this once you're finished.

100504011_1431729930364323_5643310199121903616_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=n0IwzIPSMUkAX9iOapd&_nc_ht=scontent.fyto1-2.fna&oh=9e0dd153a35dea6bbe648275bbb9e129&oe=5EEF4373

And you're done! To get the best results using this method, download and install all four mods listed at the top of this thread, especially the 'Meaningful Stories' mod, without that mod sims are basically happy all the time (classic vanilla Sims).

To test and see if this method had any impact on how sims acted, I created a household of eight Sims, all with different personalities moved them into a lot, and observed them with little influence from my end. I cataloged the emotional journeys they had in one day. Below is a collage of the different sims and the emotions they experienced throughout the day. (Note: with the 'Meaningful Stories' mod installed, green represents the Fine emotion, while white represents Happy instead of the traditional other way around.)

100473864_1431729937030989_1611314958857928704_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=ZNahSP9sNZsAX_MtGMD&_nc_ht=scontent.fyto1-1.fna&oh=ce1f2d6f1749abdc5904c6d96fc2a88d&oe=5EF20D59

As you can see, no two sims share the exact same emotional journey, and you can also see some of the sims are more prone to experience certain emotions compared to other emotions/sims. This technique doesn't fix everything wrong with personalities and emotions, but it's better than nothing. From what I have played with and experienced using this method in game so far, I am quite satisfied with the results I am seeing. My next goal is to go through every single sim in the Simsie save and update their personalities using this method, wonder how that would turn out.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
- I don't know how stable doing this type of thing is, for all I know it could heavily mess up a save file, so if you are going to try this, just be cautious and create back ups of your saves. (So far in my game nothing terrible has happened)
- I imagine with more traits applied to your sims, more is technically being simulated at one time, so this might not work well for less powerful computers.
- Editing sims traits in CAS with the extra traits applied is a bit weird, if you do plan to adjust/alter a sims traits later in game play I recommend using the Mod instead of CAS.
- The 'Meaningful Stories' mod has a feature known as "emotional inertia," I have that feature turned off in my game.
- In the vanilla game, Childish conflicts with Snob, and Lazy conflicts with Neat, so although they are on opposite sides of the spectrum in my concept, the game technically considers those traits to conflict, this can probably be ignored when selecting traits using the mod, however I'm not sure how that would effect your sims.

I hope some of you try this out. It is a lot of effort, but interesting to see how it works out anyways. I'm curious to hear about anybodies results, if you do try this out, post away below.

I'm doing somewhat the same in my game with the same mods! I have a table with all TS4 traits which I attributed to TS2 Personality characteristics and I try to select a trait to represent each of it (so I use 5 traits for YA sim). But since in TS2 we had a limited number of points to allocate between traits in TS4 all selected traits can't be on "positive" spectrum as well. So if a sim is a genius he can be hot-headed and slob to balance things out. To me it's an interesting but time-taking approach so sometimes I'm exhausted by it and necessity of tracking and calculating everything.

Ya it is a tedious task, but so much better than the vanilla personalities. I’m currently updating the latest Simsie save with this technique so that way I’ll have a default to turn to and not waste time redoing every sim in every new game I make.

That's a huge job! Good luck with it. And, yes, it's way better this way.
