How much to adjust radius for smoother edges??

I'm slowly learning to use gimp. And I'm working on making transparent backgrounds for my sims to make previews.

And it worked nice. But the pictures don't exist anymore so I have a problem with step 3 where you should adjust the radius for smoother edges/boundaries to not get the white siluette. Since the pictures is missing I don't know how much to adjust it. Anyone got tips? Or is there like a "standard" adjusting I can go out from?
