I wish the dating mechanics were more like a mini-game based on lot type honestly. My sim always wants to go to the gallery, which irl is a cute date spot, but all you can do in game is view painting or like, make out on a bench. mini-game version has you race to find the one art piece your sim reacts positively to.
That's one approach. Another is, if your sims are going spend some serious time going to and wishing to go to art galleries, then spruce them up a bit. Some of my larger ones now also have LN bars, food service in some form or another, a reading library with computers available for public use, easels, sculpting stations, a lecture hall, etc. I guess a swimming pool, merry go round, and some massage tables might be a bit much, but it depends on what kind of atmosphere one wants to create by enhancing things. :)

Oh no, then it becomes like The Sims 2 where there is a visible score bar and you have to keep full-filling wishes in order to increase the score of the date and it’s duration. There is a hidden score meter on Sims 3, but it barely matters. As @Mikezumi , I want sandbox, not being forced on doing something.

@carvernosam On the rare occasion that my sims have dates they always have a great date and I don't cram any romantic socials at all. In fact I barely direct my sims. Sure, they do get romantic on their own but if I send them to the bowling alley they might only bowl, play foosball and just interact occasionally and the date is a good one. It seems to me that good dates are dependent on how long the date goes for, not what they do.

That's a good idea, but having to spruce up every other lot just for sim dates is a little tedious unfortunately.
We all have different approaches to and takes on what we think is tedious vs. half the fun. I love sprucing up community lots that I intend my sims to use long-term (as long as it doesn't cost my active household anything unless they actually own it). Not every project is a major gut renovation though some are, nor does every attempt need to be an award-winning design job. Sometimes it's just a matter of throwing some fun things and food service options onto an already existing lot that I like or can tolerate the design of. Then, depending on the venue, I might slap an entry fee on the place by way of either the Barrier to Entry ticket machine from the store set or by using NRaas GoHere to charge for admission. If it all works out well, then the lot gets saved down to the community lot bin for potential use in other worlds. I have to admit there's nothing fun about redesigning the same bowling alley, casino, or other enclosed space almost exactly the same way each time I want to use one.

There are so many EA-made community lots that are just plain boring to me, but to be fair they did bend over backwards to not include EP or store content when designing those outside of EP worlds because not everyone would have the required objects installed for them to work otherwise.

I like to send my sims out to a fun park sometimes. There are a lot of builds in this thread if you are looking for somewhere to take sims. They are great for dates and for places to visit during the day with family.

    https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/729564/roller-coaster-carnival-amp-amore-builds-please-post-your-pics#latest

I started the thread when the Roaring Heights world was released and it had the roller coaster lot as extra content. People are still posting new builds in the thread.

Actually, my sims could end up anywhere for a date. I recently sent a couple to China for a date - they didn't do any adventuring, just had some quiet time together.
