Clearly, the stairs weren't thought through. At first blush, they're magnificent. Practical use reveals that they have a few problems.
Edited to add: I've been waiting for EA to make stair railings configurable for five years. You get both sides or you get none at all.
We rule. Yay!
Very true.
Unless I am doing something wrong, I am finding that I can't stack copies of stairs vertically.
You have to either offset the next flight one space forward or to the side.
This gives you diminishing returns the higher you go.
If you build 4 levels you might as well use a standard flight of stairs.
This is what I wanted.
I had to bump out the middle staircase one space to do it.
It's also mirrored. You go up the right side instead of the left.
Instead of a 2x3 stairwell, I am forced to take up a 3x3 area.
It takes away from the "towerness" of my tower.
I could have taken up interior space, but interior space is limited in this build.
It's at the rear of the building, so I can live with it.
But this is still why I want spiral staircases.
I feel like we should just in general have this feature. We should either be able to pick a side or push a button like shift that removes it from whatever side you want. It is unfortunate because this new stair tool is really cool but the railing thing needs to be tweaked. Obviously they made this new feature and didn’t edit they way you add railings which is where this issue comes from. It’s not a bug but it needs to addressed for sure.

I hear you. It's really hit or miss. Even with the original stairs, trying to stack them could be a finicky process. I made an apartment building with an open staircase leading to each floor. The game fought me every step of the way. I got it, eventually. I'd hate to see what happens now that the stairs have been updated.
Edited to add: @CK213 I happened to watch something last night that may be helpful to you:
I think we should be able to choose which side of the staircase we want to put it on, like in previous games. Also, each section could work as a seperate section itself, so you could put a railing where you wat.
OMG! I totally agree with the thought that rails should be optional on one side, the way the stairs are, if they are against a wall, the stair railing/hand rail goes inside of the wall, looks 🐸🐸🐸🐸, I'm a visual person when I play and I want things to look, well "normal", not like the architect didn't know what he was doing when he built the house and made the stairs too wide
I really want them to work on this and paintable ceilings! It makes me laugh that we got platforms before the ability to paint the ceilings... hopefully they'll update them sometime soon
