Can player controlled Sims litter the island?

I know there are NPC's with the litter bug trait, but can our Sims litter the island? Will other Sims become upset?
I haven't encountered the Island Spirits yet. I wonder what type of behaviour will make them upset.
It would be really neat if our Sims could litter, and get a reaction from other Sims, as we see in the gameplay trailer. (for role playing purposes).
