Can't go online in-game

For the last couple of days, I've been unable to log in, either on the launcher or in-game to upload or download stuff. Using sims 3, 1.69. Obviously, I can login to the website, and I can login to Origin, but not the launcher, or the main menu, on the store mode.

When I'm in the launcher, the Welcome tab is just blank. When I go to upload or download, and try to login, it doesn't work. When I hit the "forgot my password" button (which I haven't), it goes to the welcome tab and just shows an Error 500 (server error).

I've got Sims 3 loaded on another PC too, and I can still login from the launcher there.

Try clearing Internet Explorer's cache. Even if you never use it, the launcher does for some purposes. (So does the store.) Be sure to uncheck the box to preserve data for favorites.

Thanks, that worked perfectly. I use Chrome, not IE so I probably wouldn't have gotten to that. I've complained about the Sims 3 using IE instead of the default browser before. I guess this is just another one of their egregious blunders.

It's not an egregious blunder. IE has hooks into and is actually part of the operating system and can process calls for data that require such hooks whereas other browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Opera intended for surfing the web and downloading cannot. That's why there are still some financial and other market specific websites out there that do not work properly on other browsers. MS Edge for those on Win 10 might be an exception, but TS3 wasn't designed for Edge because Win 10 is so much newer than the game is.

While arguably not the best design decision for Windows programs today, this is just the way things were commonly done back in 2007-09 when the game was moving from the drawing board to a usable product.
