It totally depends on the sim and the family. I don't chose a specific Sim or household until it feels like they should have a pet. When it is right - it is right I guess. There is no way I could answer the frequency - as it varies. Just like I don't make all my households get a mate - have kids - etc - etc - I move to those places as the Sims seem to indicate families, pets, etc would in some way benefit them or fulfill them. Even though I love having kids and pets in the game - it does not always work in every household at any time. Sort of like real life.

I have 3 active households right now and 2 of them have them. I always like to put pets in the household, but im also waiting for the right time. 1 of my households just aren't pet people and are very snobby, so no pets for them.
In the other I have a puppy at the moment and the other one has 2 cats.

Between seldom and often. They are a bit high maintenance, which doesn't work well with some households in my play-style (micromanager). Plus I have been building a lot lately, so I just add them toward the end of the play-testing. I add a couple that I move around that are 'potty-trained' and all. They're pretty good sports about the whole thing. ;)

I totally agree about the baths thing. Way too often, and it takes several tries oftentimes, also, to get my sims to actually DO the bath not stand there stupidly while the assigned task leaves their tiny brain. Yaaaa... I general hate dog baths.

I am waiting for small birds as pets.

I'm waiting for one in real life! Would probably drive my Yorkie and Chihuahuas nuts! Too late. I think they're there. Are they thinking of birds for the game? I would enjoy a parrot that repeated my Sims' nonsense-speak and perplexed or delighted them a bit...

I wanted pets so bad and now I rarely have pets in my households lol. Cats are OK but dogs are very annoying. They run away constantly and add a sad moodlet to my sims and they ALWAYS need something. I guess they're just realistic, lol, but still.

I wish I could play with more pets, but I've been at the 200 max limit for awhile. They are excessively needy though. That needs to be dialed down bit.

I played when they first came out and then I found it rather boring . Lather rinse and repeat .. repeat .. repeat. Just takes so much time and leaves no time for other chores.
    Laugh out loud. Often

I don't play them much, I rotate households and the pets are always dirty, sick and hungry, whenever you come back to their lots. Even with mods to help fix this, pets get old real fast, for me.
