I'd say the open world and the design tool are the big reasons the Sims 3 is king in terms of the product itself. However, it's the thriving modder community and fellow players willing to share personal and custom content that keeps it fresh and alive. The latter is the main reason I joined this forum.
Most of the people I know in the sims 4 community is absolutely nostalgic to see sims 3. Why? Because the sims 3 is probably the sims that touches people souls and have a big impact on the players as the sims 2. If the sims 4 was not quick and stable and if it doesn't run on old computers people would not play with it such it's boring in a long term.
I play sims 4 of course and currently I am into a bit but I always come back to the sims 3 I am so sentimental with my sims, they bring me joy, laugh and I am always amazed by them. This is the only game I am totally in love with the gameplay despite the hate the community have on it. The sims 3 is the most hated sims game much more than the sims 4 in reality.
