"A Renovator's Dream Competition"
The Block AU/NZ

As the heading implies, The Block AU/NZ is a competition based on the Aussie TV show "The Block" where contestants are assigned a brief to renovate a house or room. Anyone can enter, you don't need to be a builder or have any experience building in The Sims 4 as this is mostly a decorating competition. The competition will run one a month, February to November (inclusive), with the winners of each month being entered into a People's Choice competition. (read more about the People's Choice competition in the post below this one. The monthly winner will receive recognition by way of a badge they can include in their signature.

The Block AU/NZ General Rules
  • Download the current rounds house from the gallery. Details will be in current round post. The Link to the Current Round Brief will be in the third post of this thread.
  • Each round will run for the month in which it commences. Entries are to be submitted at the end of the third week of the month (actual date will be detailed in Round Brief) with the last week allowed for judging entries.
  • Each round will be assigned a tag, beginning with #theblockau/nz then with the current round attached (example #theblockau/nz-round1). Make sure this hashtag is in the description area of you entry when saving to your Library so it is easy to find on the gallery.
  • Renovations can be a room, part of a house or a whole house. It may include patio areas and/or gardens.
  • This competition does not allow the use of Custom Content (CC). No third party items to be used period. Each round will state in the Round Brief which expansion/game/stuff packs are allowed and/or disallowed according to Host and judge's discretion.
  • Stairs, fireplaces, columns, windows, doors and wall placement may not be removed or changed in any way. The only exception will be the Front Door can be recoloured (restyling tool) but the type of door cannot be altered.
  • Whilst changing windows is against the rules, adding an extra one may be permitted if the Host and judges of the Round agrees. It will need to be in the same style and colour as existing windows or if different from the rest, it must be one agreed upon with the Host and judges.
  • In rounds where entrants are to renovate different rooms within a house, the area you have to renovate will have identical floor covering. This is "cosmetic" only to initially show you what area is yours. You may change these floor coverings to whatever you want in your renovation.
  • Internal wall coverings can be changed to whatever suits your renovation BUT external wall cladding cannot be altered.
  • Freestanding or attached internal walls may be added as long as they do not interfere or alter in any way the other rooms of the house.
  • No more than four pictures are to be uploaded by the date given in each Round Brief. You are welcome to display more than three pictures but these must be hosted on a photo site like Flicker or imgur here.
  • New Members NOTE - As a new member you won't be able to upload pictures. We don't want you to have to miss out because of this so if you let me know once you have uploaded your entry to the gallery, I and whomever is helping judge will take some pictures and place them in the thread for you.
  • When uploading your pictures to the thread make sure your Origin ID is written at the top of your post even if it is the same as your Forum ID.
  • Cheats (eg MOO) and the use of EA debug (hidden) objects are permissible.
  • The Base Game includes any content that is delivered free in a patch irrespective of when that patch is delivered.

    Host(s) Rules

I and whomever else wants to be involved, will be your host for The Block AU however from time to time there will be others who will share in this so the following is posted to help out.
  • Give a short story as a background to the renovation so that entrants have an indication of what is required. Remember to include things like:
    style (where applicable)
    activities/uses
    budget
    any special requirements
  • Rules made by the host for an individual round will override the general rules above. For example: While the front door can be colour changed under the rules, the host(s) can stipulate this to be disallowed in their particular round.
  • A budget must be stipulated even if the budget is unlimited. In cases where entrants are required to renovate different rooms, it may be necessary to apply budgets by room.
  • The three main criteria to use when judging are to be:
creativity - the imaginative use of features.
innovation - using items in ways they were not originally intended for.
harmony - creating balance between shape, form and colour.
This will aid in keeping subjectivity to a minimum as we all have our particular preferences. :)
  • Ensure your house/room is ready to be uploaded by the first day of the month you are hosting.
  • Ensure what you are uploading is your own work or, if another’s creation, you have permission to use their work. Also ensure that your build works especially if doing individual rooms that each room will upload as a unit. If you are trying to do a particular build and are having trouble I (sawdust) will give what aid I can to make it work for you or ask in the forum as I’m sure there are others willing to help as well.
  • Please make sure you state the date by which all entrants must be uploaded to the Gallery for judging. Allow approx. 5 – 7 days before the end of the month.
  • The post announcing the winner of the round must be made at the very latest on the last day of the month.
  • Remember to tag your build in the description area with #theblockau/nz-round* (where * is the round number) when saving your creation to your Library for the purpose of sharing to the Gallery.

    People's Choice Award.

In addition to The Block AU competition, winners of each round will be entered into a People's Choice Award. This will be broken down into two competitions, Dry Season (July to November winners) and Wet Season (February to June winners). Forum users will be asked to vote on their favourite winner for the season. Anyone who is registered on the Australian and New Zealand forum is entitled to vote.

A special poll will be made available in the Competition Section of this forum at the end of the season along with pictures of the entries that you are to vote on. The Dry Season voting will be open during the month of December and the winner announced in January while the Wet Season voting will be open during July and the winner announced in August.

The two winners will be awarded a small prize.

    Plan to Build

Sawdust organised this competition a while back but thought I would transfer it here. This is a building competition that will utilize floor plans for builders to produce their interpretation of a house. It will run in conjunction

I will supply a plan on every Second Sunday. Entrants will need to build their interpretation of the plan and upload it by the Wednesday week ready for judging. (that gives you 11 days to build). I will announce the winner by Saturday of the same week at the latest. Then the next day (Sunday) a new round will begin.

The build need not be exactly like the plan as there may be some things the Sims 4 build style doesn't allow for. As long as it is recognisable and has a similar layout it will be acceptable.

Unless a specific style is asked for in the individual round brief, you are free to do the plan in whatever style you wish (eg. modern/adobe/cottage etc.)

When saving to your Library for upload to the Gallery please use the hashtag #plan2build* (where * is the round number). The number will be noted in the individual brief.

No CC is to be used and unless it is stated otherwise, you are free to use any packs in conjunction with the base game.

The build is to include decorating and landscaping and a budget will be given for each round.

Upload 4 photos only to the thread. You are welcome to post a link to more photos as long as they are hosted elsewhere.

Please include your Origin ID when posting your entry.

Any questions please feel free to ask. :)
