Help! I have a question about when you create multi families!

I created my first sim and put her in a house and saved and everything and all is well.
My husband wanted to make a sim but my problem is when we go to make his character, my sim is no longer in her house but in the move in to house selector.
But if I choose my save file with her name she's still in her house.
What am I doing wrong? I would like to be able to make and play multiple sims in my game/neighborhood, not just one sim!
I'm sorry if the answer is simple, I'm just really lost.
