Gravestones - How they work:
Once a Sim dies of old age a Gravestone dedicated to this Sim will be added to the inventory. You can then place it on your home lot. (If you want; or delete it)
You can tab a new icon that brings you to the family tree screen similar to the heirloom screen.

No this isn't from the game.
But they in fact said that there will be an "Alien Arrival" at some point in the game. Hope they will make these Aliens playable then.
There are certain events in this game (similar to festivals in San Myshuno). In my town there's a music festival right now where you can show off your guitar skill. I suppose the "Alien Arrival" will work the same way.
