Animations and VFX from SP/GP/EP content downloaded for base game?

I've been wondering about use of Animations and VFX in mods, namely in terms of using Animations or VFX from a specific pack in a mod that can be used with only base game installed. At first, I was thinking the Animations and VFX only get downloaded if you have the related pack, but now I'm not so sure because I came across the fact that special PlantSim moods have a reference to GTW (ep1) VFX and since PlantSims are accessible to everyone, it appears that at least on the VFX end, my first thought was wrong.

It appears that the VFX do get downloaded in some way, whether you own the pack or not, probably as part of the game update preceding the release of the pack? Cause otherwise, it wouldn't make sense for PlantSim moods to have references to an EP's VFX.

I'd just like to confirm without a doubt one way or another, so I know what all resources I can reference in mods, while only requiring base game on the user's end.

@SimGuruModSquad Figured this is something you could confirm pretty easily one way or another.

    Hi @Triplis,

I can confirm that all VFX are indeed patched to all users as part of the base game. This generally will include all the models and textures required to properly display the effect.

Pack specific Sim and Object Animations generally come with the pack's data and not the Base Game patch. This is not always true for various reasons, but generally we try and put as much as we can into the pack data to keep the Base Game patch sizes down.

A good way to test whether your mod will work with Base Game only is to disable all packs when testing, here is blog post about how to do that:

    http://sims4.crinrict.com/en/2017/03/disable-single-packs/

... this pack disabling isn't "officially" supported because it has some caveats as mentioned in the blog post, but useful for modders to verify their mods do not have dependencies on pack data.
