Serious routing issues in TSM

Never encountered anything like this before, but I was playing Sims Medieval for the first time in a year (since I finally found a way to fix the directx setup error that gave me a hard time). Played for 4 hours with zero issues, and then...
My Sim can't go anywhere. She is stuck in the throne room/surrounding area and can no longer access any terrain that isn't perfectly flat~ clearing my cache files did not fix it and any posts I could find about similar issues were at least 5 years old. But I played on my laptop for years with no issues: this is a brand new vanilla game on a brand new computer, so I shouldn't be having these problems.
I'm not a programmer or a techie, and therefore don't feel comfortable messing around with mods or hacks or anything like that. Should I just cut my losses, or is there a mod-free fix for this issue that someone can explain to me in plain English (not computer speak)?
