I am currently playing a self-indulgent save with my young SS and my newly made over Josh sim Although my SS has terrible genetics, I will let her have her LTW to be Surrounded by Family
Josh
Zumi
Their first child, unfortunately, was a male clone of Zumi I don't normally touch genetics once a save is underway but since this is just a self-indulgent save so I can play with Josh for a while I made an exception and used MC Play with Genetics to get a different outcome. Here's how the original would have grown up. I will post the new one as he grows up in game. He will still be less than fortunate in the looks department but at least he is a blend.
@Mikezumi That's not awful but it does go to show how far apart male and female looks can be with identical genetics. Some day I'll age up Dane and Donovan's girls, Dana is kind of funny-looking, but she's Avant-Garde and will carry it with outrageous fashion. I think that Fauna bred more true as a real looker, with Dane's killer genes, but we'll see.
In my game, first look at Child Trey. He looks like a Teague clone, facially, but with Ean's darker coloration (Dane's hair, Donovan's skin).
@Sindocat My females tend to look harder because I use males as bases for them to ensure the genetics of male offspring. Because this is not my usual save and my SS was made to look like me in my youth, the male offspring will suffer if they look like her. I guess he wasn't hideous as a clone, but definitely a lot softer looking than I like my males to be. I guess I just don't like round heads on my males
Trey looks like a cute kid! I look forward to seeing him when he ages up
The way the genetics seem to work is that the child will get an exact copy of a feature from one of its parents. Each of the other features may be from the same parent or from the other. We don't get a blend of the two parents in a feature or facial proportions. There's also the added problem of most skins, even EA's default I think, of making the female nose so much narrower than the male one for the exact same nose.
Sometimes I will tweak the features of a child to make them a blend of the two parents. I will also sometimes make the female nose wider or the male nose narrower to compensate for the bias in the skins. It is easy to do that using the numeric values on the sliders provided by the NRaas MasterController mod and its add-on mods. In my genetics save of generating families for other games I didn't bother to do that. I may though when I use the households in future games.
@cwaddell I am aware of how the genetics work but do not tweak the numbers. If I get a clone, I usually live with it and just don't use them as the heir. In the case of my current save, I am not concerned with long-term genetics so I re-rolled the genetics of the clone son using MC Play With Genetics so that he got at least a mixture of his parents' features.
To compensate for the way that features are proportioned in the opposite gender I use female/male only sliders on the original sims so that my females don't end up with small noses or overly narrow jaws.
Josh and Zumi's daughter, Kala, just aged up to child. Apart from colouring, she is very much like Pika. I would prefer the kids didn't get Zumi's nose, but at least they didn't get her eyes
Definitely! I've had sims have a baby with totally unrelated hair color multiple times. I've also had a sim with purple skin and blue hair have a baby with a normal sim. I was so excited to see what the baby would look like. It came out normal lmao.
@alexjoanroww Random mutations in hair colour is one of the things I like least about genetics, especially when kids get the baby poo green hair Still, I use so many mods these days, including a hair colour one, that it is only a minor irritation.
Looking forward to seeing some of your sims since you are now a member and are able to post them
@Mikezumi Same. The baby poo green hair is such a bummer! Thanks! Unfortunately,I don't have the purple sim anymore but I'm doing a legacy challenge so I can post about them. I'm also considering making a blog and writing the story.
@alexjoanroww Have fun with your blog and story writing As I tell simmers when they are looking for readers, it is always a good thing to interact with other simmers on the forum. Show interest in what others are doing and they could well show interest in what you do
@wsteffi30 Thanks for sharing pics of Jacqueline and Perry Looking forward to seeing their kids
Not sure how you feel about default sims, but Perry appears to have all zero slider positions. If you only play the occasional default sim it's no big deal but if you constantly marry them into your families you could end up with sims that look the same generation after generation.
I've had the hair that the female sim is wearing for a long time. I think it came with a sim I downloaded from the exchange, back when I used to do that.
Josh and Zumi's fourth child, Kimo, aged up to teen today. He mostly resembles Josh. He got his colouring from Zumi and something else I can't put my finger on without looking at the sliders because I can see a slight difference between him and Akamu (who is a Josh clone) when I see them side by side.

I like both children. They are both very nice looking sims.

This is my sim Jacqueline from earlier in the thread.
This is her husband, Perry Ricketts. He's one of the town sims.
No children yet but hopefully soon.

I agree. I don't usually get a town sim but my sim didn't take a liking to any of the other sims but that one. I'm not sure why.
