It would be very useful if we had the option to delete unnecessary threads or individual posts! There isn't really a good reason to preserve user history so why not allow deletion of personal entries?

I'll be direct: No.
Allowing users to delete their own threads and posts means they have zero accountability for their actions. If you end up wanting to delete something then you probably shouldn't have posted it. Do a gut check and say "will this get me in trouble or cause huge fights in the community?" if so: Don't post it.
