    Issue installing Origin

    Hiya,

    Returning to play the Sims 3 (I haven't felt the need to buy Sims 4 either).

    I get a message during my install of Origin and it stops installing and reports "checking whether origin is currently running..." and just stays at that point.

    I have never had Origin on this machine, can anyone advise?

      Hiya, I have since found out it is because I am running on Windows vista - is there anyway to install origin while still running on this old PC version?

      Hiya - I have found a link to an old version of Origin so I could install, as I'm not too sure how to upgrade my operating system at the moment! I just want to play, too much hassle, so this'll do for now. Thank you very much though!

      since you mentioned your crashing in another thread If you could please post you computer specs . Windows key + R key will open your run box in the lower left hand corner of your computer. In the run box type DxDiag. Hit ok, let it load than choose to save a copy to your desktop. Open the DxDiag text file at desktop, copy and past the report in several sections in several posts. The file is too long to put in one post Thank you

      Bit rubbish at the tech side of computers, let me know if there's anything missing. And the issue is when a Sim travels to University, they drive off and it loads up the transition screen and the bar doesn't move at all and eventually it crashes.

      @munchiepoo you have enough ram. Your processor is more than 2.4 ghz so thats ok. Your biggest issue I see is your video card It can not run many of the eps and possibly why your getting stuck with uni and crashing.

      @phoebebebe13 - Are you certain the OP has enough RAM? Even on Vista (I'm assuming 32-bit here), 3 GB with a weak video card sounds awfully tight to me depending on the EPs in play. The Traveler mod plus the other two I suggested on the other thread might still help, but I really don't think the heavier EPs are going to work well here. Which ones are in play?

      Personally I wouldn't attempt anything more than the base game plus maybe the first three or four EPs that came out on this system,and even then it sounds like the threat of crashes and Error12s would be just around every corner.

      @igazor thanks for pointing that out. I can't tell if op has 32 or 64 bit OS. If I remember correctly vista on dxdiag wont tell you. @munchiepoo off hand do you know if your windows version is 64 or 32 bit.

      Hi both, thanks all for your help. I'll take a look at the video card requirements, been meaning in the back of my mind to update my PC for the paste few months, just need to find a bit of time to sit down and take a look.

      I believe my PC is a 32bit. I have turned down my settings ever so slightly again as it began to lag. I'm also now only running University, Pets, Generations and Supernatural, although I don't use pets and do turn them off in the settings. I use the EP more for some of the clothes.

      I was running more EP's but I decided to turn them off.

      @muchiepoo Your welcome If it's 32 bit , your going to have even more problems. You have 6gb of computer ram but if you have a 32 bit windows it will not permit you to use the 6gb of ram. You will not be able to play long saves. You will run into error code 12 for not having enough computer memory to run the game.

      Pets is the most demanding ep in the game. With IP, ITF and seasons. You need a mid range gaming desktop to run them efficiently. I agree with igazor you computer can not handle later eps.

      I believe even if you have the eps you cant run still installed in your computer, it will still effect your saves since I believe the game would be saving those eps when you save. Would like @igazor input on this

      @phoebebebe13 - Are we looking at the same dxdiag? The last time this happened, I was the one reading it wrong...but I see 3 GB of RAM here, not 6 GB. The Page File size doesn't count. With a 32-bit OS, they would only be able to upgrade to a max of 4 GB recognized which admittedly is 33% more than they have now, but still restrictive.

      The game itself can use up to around 3.7 GB of RAM. A fresh one starting out would likely be using less than 2 GB depending on the size and complexity of the world and active household being played, but that usage tends to increase as the ongoing game progresses for most players. With only 3 GB total and the operating system and background processes taking up a large chunk of that, there just isn't going to be enough left for the game to work with.

      @munchiepoo - When we say Pets is the most demanding, no we don't just mean actually having animals in the game we mean the Pets EP. Sorry if that was confusing. This system's RAM limitations and graphics card are likely not going to be able to work reliably or very well at all with any EP released after Generations or so. Uni and Supernatural are less demanding than some of the others, but could still be a bit too much for it to handle.

      As for being installed but not running, does that mean unselected on Patch 1.69's EP/SP Chooser? That might actually be okay, I don't think installed but unselected EPs load during the startup process so they wouldn't actually be adding any overhead to the game if they stay unused. But once a saved game has "seen" certain EPs, it cannot be played forward without them loaded up or the saved game will refuse to load, crash, or become corrupt.

      @igazor you are correct I was looking at this 6103MB available and thought it stated GB . Even worse that it states MB :/

      That means the player has a 6 GB capacity Paging File (virtual memory file), which is fine for that. But TS3 doesn't make all that much use of virtual memory like other processes do. If it did, the constant paging in and out would be unstable and still insufficient to carry the entire game with total RAM so tight.

      @igazor I know what it means It was my mistake thinking I was reading it as physical ram when op really only has less than 4gb computer usable ram because of 32 bit OS

      Hiya,

      I did just enter University (and didn't crash), I tried it without thinking and as soon as I sent my Sim off, I realised I didn't save but all was good.

      I turned down some of my settings a bit more to see if it would help, it does help with performance.
