The way to get a sim into CAS without mods is to hit contol + shift + C to bring up the cheat console, type testingcheatsenabled true (enter), and then shift-click on a sim. When finished, you can turn testingcheats off by bringing up the console again and typing testingcheatsenabled false (enter).
The issue with entering CAS this way is that it tends to mess with a sim's age within their current stage.
MasterController doesn't mess with ages. It should not be crashing anyone's game, provided you have the right version for your patch level. If you are on Patch 1.67, it is possible that your patch job (through the Launcher) was incomplete even though it said otherwise. EA's SuperPatcher can correct that. https://help.ea.com/en/article/the-sims-3-super-patcher
If you are on a different patch level, that might make things more complicated.
Edit: The other common reason for MasterController crashing is having the optional MC Progression module in place without both the MasterController base and StoryProgression base mods. The MC Progression module is a bridge between the two base mods and will crash the game on startup every time if either one is missing.

Heck, I probably have as much fun in CAS as I do playing. How do I just load CAS with no town?
If only! I loved TS2's BodyShop for that kind of thing; didn't need to load the whole game just to make Sims. I rarely go into CAS in TS3, just when I'm in need of Sims for something.

hit control + shift + C to bring up the cheat console, type testingcheatsenabled and press enter, then hold down shift and click on the sim you want to edit, then click on "edit sim in create a sim" and then you can edit them!

You still need to load up the world first but it's very small created for people that just want to load CAS. I have not tried it myself.

Thanks for the link but I also have my own custom Build Town worlds that usually at most only have one Sim. My biggest issue with CAS isn't getting into it as it is waiting for the clothing pages to load. I have about half the expansion packs, some store content with very limited CC and it seems to take ages for the everyday and formalwear pages to load.

@BSIRegina - Have you tried MasterController's Compact View option? That should speed up the loading of clothing categories considerably. Of course, it only works in instances of CAS entered by way of a MasterController command unless you also have the MC Integration module.

No, I haven't. I was thinking of trying that then forgot all about it! *smacks self upside the head then quickly copies and pastes tidbit into her "Book of Igazor"*
A question I had about that is, this works by basically collapsing a lot of the clothing options, doesn't it? If that's the case what happens when there are articles that have different overlays or no overlay, like there are clothes with fancy trims on them and usually an option without the decoration. Also, what does it do to any custom saved options? I don't usually save a lot but once in a while I'll save something I'll use frequently.

That's correct, the (usually three) options that display for each item in the catalog are collapsed into one. But the pre-made options can be revealed using the CASt tool, as can saved user-made combos.
If you find yourself staring at a block of clothing in Compact View and can't seem to find what you are looking for, you can switch back to the regular, slower to load, view without having to leave CAS by right-clicking on the "..." Game Options button to bring up MC CAS Settings again. Then leave the category you were in (Everyday Tops for example, so switch to Shoes for a moment) and return to it.

But we do offer support at NRaas for those having trouble with our mods.

I know, right! At first I only used TS3 for CAS. It's only recently that I've been into playing the game. Both are equally fun now.
