@me1620, as I've mentioned, whether here or elsewhere, don't be TOO jealous of TS4 updates. I'm still finding bugs unresolved in my game that they claim are fixed. And because they insist they are fixed I'm getting literally no response on the forums when I ask for help. Even after one of the gurus asked for a save game file, they never got back to me.
Yesterday I resorted to the EA suggestion to everything. A slash and burn. Deleted everything, reinstalled and started a new game with new Sims. I don't really feel like playing City Living this week, but I want to see if this resolves the problems I've been having. I will admit that when I sent my Sim on a camping trip prior to this his friend actually stayed the whole trip, rather than returning home the first night as had every previous time. But, even if this resolves my situation, EA still left me hanging as far as support goes.

I know I didn't buy anything on the MMAO if the discount wasn't at least 40% until the very end of my store shopping. At the end, when I almost owned the store, I became less patient and settled for higher prices just to reach the finish line. And I often slipped by not double checking the Daily Deal spreadsheet and ended up spending more for something through MMAO than I would have on the Daily Deal. But I also intentionally bought items that were on the DD because they were grouped with MMAO exclusives.
Also, about the playpen, it is available as an individual purchase, but the Tiny Prodigies Early Learning Center venue is not eligible for CYS. So keep this in mind if you are interested in getting the venue.

I'm still trying to understand this CYS thing.. is it better the buy the Humble Harvest Stand on Sale in the store now at that price and wait for Al Fresco Market to hit the Daily Deal in a few weeks to discount that more then?
@EverclearBoy Fully understanding or not fully understanding CYS unfortunately doesn't help in this case. Not all things have CYS enabled, venues are one of those things. So if you just want the humble harvest stand buy it, if you want the entire al fresco street market venue then buy that.

@EverclearBoy97 To expand on @angeljess26's answer. If the larger item, ie, is not CYS eligible, then no, it is never worth buying any component at any price if you plan to buy the larger. It will not help and will only be a waste of points.
What follows is more in depth, but I recommend you read it all. Then decide how much of it you need to hold on to and use. When I started I hadn't read through all the tips on page one and spent more points than I needed to. You've asked about CYS, so I'm answering as completely as I can without teaching a course. (Hmmm, that training video....)
As for CYS in general, there is a tool for calculating the actual relative value of an individual component item toward the total set. And it is fairly accurate. It is mentioned on the first page of this discussion, but here is a shortcut to the entry. link
As soon as you purchase any item from a set you've reduced the price by at least 10%. That's when the math really starts. And, for some of us, the fun begins.
The tool can be very useful, especially when the set is on the DD. This is because sometimes you could end up buying too many components and you could have achieved the free Download button without them all. Or at least reached a point where the sale price of the set was lower than that final item's sale price. If you want to get down and dirty, then by all means, read all about it and play with the raw data. I had created a new tab in my spreadsheet where I had scheduled future purchases and projected their effect on the CYS of my target sets. I did this both to avoid overbuying components and to see when I could look forward to those green buttons.
But, a lot of the work has already been done and there is a tab on the spreadsheet that will help you with a fairly accurate estimate of your ongoing progress toward your CYS. If you follow the instructions on the regional spreadsheet, it will fill in your CYS on the main page, and continuously update that number throughout the main deal page as you update the single CYS tab. Make sure that you update the appropriate tab to include purchases that aren't on the DD rotation. You simply check your CYS on the store page and update the entry on the CYS tab. The advantage to doing this instead of just checking the store page is that it is right there on the deal page when the deal comes around on sale (see next paragraph.) This is when other peoples' leg work is doing you the most good.
If the CYS price for a set on the store page is 1200 SP, but that item comes on sale on the DD, the sale price will lower that CYS price or even make the Download button appear. These are the events you do not want to miss, and having that information right on the deal schedule puts it right in your face so that you don't miss it.
Oh, and finally, the Sales items. The sales page has not changed in, OMG is it almost two years now?! I just went to the page to check, because for the longest time the expiration date was stagnant, but the date has been updated, even though the items haven't changed. Anyway, those sale prices effect CYS in an odd way that I never quite figured out. I don't remember if the discount is based on the sale price or the value of item. When an item is purchased on the DD, the CYS discount is based on the regular value of that item. Could someone chime in on this detail please?

If purchasing the first item takes 10% when Al Fresco Market comes up on the Daily Deal at its lowest price of 494, Buying the Humble Harvest stand right now on sale for 422, would only end up reducing that Daily deal price another 49? Or would it do more than that?

@EverclearBoy While for a set the first purchase takes off 10%, purchasing anything from the Al fresco Market venue won't help because CYS in not available on venues, so buying anything other than the whole venue itself is a waste of your points (if you want the whole thing anyways).
Just a note the cinema venue is a little different, it is part of a compilation (march 2013 compilation) so buying parts of it will help towards the compilation CYS (which if you buy enough of the compilation can result in getting the rest of it free) even if it doesn't directly reduce the venues CYS (because it doesn't have CYS).

@EverclearBoy In order to make changes to the spreadsheet you need to save a copy to either your own computer or to your own Google drive. Once you do that, you own it and any changes you make do not effect the master copy that is shared. I highly recommend that you do that with one of the regional versions for your time zone. The list of time zone specific sheets if here.

As for how the discount would have applied. And this is in general, since Al Fresco isn't eligible. The first item takes off 10% of the base value of the set. I'm using the term "base value" to mean the full price in the store when not on the Daily Deal, on Sale or bought through the MMAO system. PLUS, 10% of the base value of the item purchased. This calculation doesn't care what you actually paid for the item(s) being applied to the discount.
So, at the time I'm writing this the DD is the Turn the End-Tables. The Deal price is 9 SP. The base value is 39 SP. It is part of several sets, but for this example I will use the Romanza Ceremony, Reception + Attire The base value of that set is 1,160 SP.
If you purchase the table for 9 SP, it lowers the set price by 119.9.
116 points is 10% of the total set value.
3.9 points is 10% of the base value of the table.
At that point your CYS would be 1,040.1 SP.
Finally, when Romanza Ceremony, Reception + Attire comes up on Deal # 662, the deal price is normally 336 SP. This is 71% off the base price. Your deal price would be 301.629 SP. TYhat same discount applied to your CYS.
Any other pieces you purchase reduce the CYS further by 10% of their base value.
Also, even if you want a CYS eligible set that has no items on the DD, you are better off buying the lowest priced item from that set first and then buying the set. You will always save points because of that instant 10+% discount.
Finally, there is information about which items are worth buying when they come up and which aren't based on their value as part of the set. That information is here. Basically, you don't want to pay more for an item than it is going to lower the CYS of the set.

There is no "tool" for MMAO. It is pretty much random. The site just seems to generate groupings and prices with no pattern most of the time. Many of us set our own "rules" though. I know I didn't buy anything on the MMAO if the discount wasn't at least 40% until the very end of my store shopping. At the end, when I almost owned the store, I became less patient and settled for higher prices just to reach the finish line. And I often slipped by not double checking the Daily Deal spreadsheet and ended up spending more for something through MMAO than I would have on the Daily Deal. But I also intentionally bought items that were on the DD because they were grouped with MMAO exclusives.
Also, about the playpen, it is available as an individual purchase, but the Tiny Prodigies Early Learning Center venue is not eligible for CYS. So keep this in mind if you are interested in getting the venue.

What follows is more in depth, but I recommend you read it all. Then decide how much of it you need to hold on to and use. When I started I hadn't read through all the tips on page one and spent more points than I needed to. You've asked about CYS, so I'm answering as completely as I can without teaching a course. (Hmmm, that training video....)
As for CYS in general, there is a tool for calculating the actual relative value of an individual component item toward the total set. And it is fairly accurate. It is mentioned on the first page of this discussion, but here is a shortcut to the entry.

As soon as you purchase any item from a set you've reduced the price by at least 10%. That's when the math really starts. And, for some of us, the fun begins.
The tool can be very useful, especially when the set is on the DD. This is because sometimes you could end up buying too many components and you could have achieved the free Download button without them all. Or at least reached a point where the sale price of the set was lower than that final item's sale price. If you want to get down and dirty, then by all means, read all about it and play with the raw data. I had created a new tab in my spreadsheet where I had scheduled future purchases and projected their effect on the CYS of my target sets. I did this both to avoid overbuying components and to see when I could look forward to those green buttons.
But, a lot of the work has already been done and there is a tab on the spreadsheet that will help you with a fairly accurate estimate of your ongoing progress toward your CYS. If you follow the instructions on the regional spreadsheet, it will fill in your CYS on the main page, and continuously update that number throughout the main deal page as you update the single CYS tab. Make sure that you update the appropriate tab to include purchases that aren't on the DD rotation. You simply check your CYS on the store page and update the entry on the CYS tab. The advantage to doing this instead of just checking the store page is that it is right there on the deal page when the deal comes around on sale (see next paragraph.) This is when other peoples' leg work is doing you the most good.
If the CYS price for a set on the store page is 1200 SP, but that item comes on sale on the DD, the sale price will lower that CYS price or even make the Download button appear. These are the events you do not want to miss, and having that information right on the deal schedule puts it right in your face so that you don't miss it.
Oh, and finally, the Sales items. The sales page has not changed in, OMG is it almost two years now?! I just went to the page to check, because for the longest time the expiration date was stagnant, but the date has been updated, even though the items haven't changed. Anyway, those sale prices effect CYS in an odd way that I never quite figured out. I don't remember if the discount is based on the sale price or the value of item. When an item is purchased on the DD, the CYS discount is based on the regular value of that item. Could someone chime in on this detail please?

If purchasing the first item takes 10% when Al Fresco Market comes up on the Daily Deal at its lowest price of 494, Buying the Humble Harvest stand right now on sale for 422, would only end up reducing that Daily deal price another 49? Or would it do more than that?

Just a note the cinema venue is a little different, it is part of a compilation (march 2013 compilation) so buying parts of it will help towards the compilation CYS (which if you buy enough of the compilation can result in getting the rest of it free) even if it doesn't directly reduce the venues CYS (because it doesn't have CYS).

As for how the discount would have applied. And this is in general, since Al Fresco isn't eligible. The first item takes off 10% of the base value of the set. I'm using the term "base value" to mean the full price in the store when not on the Daily Deal, on Sale or bought through the MMAO system. PLUS, 10% of the base value of the item purchased. This calculation doesn't care what you actually paid for the item(s) being applied to the discount.
So, at the time I'm writing this the DD is the Turn the End-Tables. The Deal price is 9 SP. The base value is 39 SP. It is part of several sets, but for this example I will use the Romanza Ceremony, Reception + Attire The base value of that set is 1,160 SP.
If you purchase the table for 9 SP, it lowers the set price by 119.9.
116 points is 10% of the total set value.
3.9 points is 10% of the base value of the table.
At that point your CYS would be 1,040.1 SP.
Finally, when Romanza Ceremony, Reception + Attire comes up on Deal # 662, the deal price is normally 336 SP. This is 71% off the base price. Your deal price would be 301.629 SP. TYhat same discount applied to your CYS.
Any other pieces you purchase reduce the CYS further by 10% of their base value.
Also, even if you want a CYS eligible set that has no items on the DD, you are better off buying the lowest priced item from that set first and then buying the set. You will always save points because of that instant 10+% discount.
Finally, there is information about which items are worth buying when they come up and which aren't based on their value as part of the set. That information is here. Basically, you don't want to pay more for an item than it is going to lower the CYS of the set.
