My name is Mark Watney and I have been stranded on a desolate planet after a freak sand storm, and I mean a freak storm, as there has been nothing but sunshine and a very light wind since. I will be posting a journal in case someone finds my remains as I have no hope of being rescued.

Journal Entry:1


I have found a variety of plant life, but only one is edible. It looks like a potato, tastes like a potato, so I deduce it must be a potato. I am a very clever botanist!

I know you think you see a house behind me. Believe me, you do not. Would I be living outside....without a shower if there was housing available? Right...so there isn't a house behind me. There is in fact, a hologram of a house behind me. I haven't found the source yet. This gives me hope that I am not alone.



I've retrieved all the wreckage from the ship that was scattered around my base camp and have begun trying to reassemble the rocket.


Thankfully, I do have an ample supply of "quick meals" in my space cooler. The "potatoes" will provide a way to stretch these tasty meals out and I will hopefully not starve to death.

I've done a bit of traveling and found that there is a holographic town and neighborhoods scattered throughout the landscape. Even holograms of "people" roam about. Let me tell you, it is a nasty trick! I spent a good hour running up to these "ghosts" trying to communicate.


I've gotten use to walking through buildings not being able to touch anything. Imagine my surprise when I found a solid object and it worked! I enjoyed a long deserved shower greatly.I will limit my showers to once a week until the water source can be found.

My potatoes are doing surprisingly well! Did I mention, I hate potatoes already? Didn't I?  Well, I do.


I can't believe my luck or am I cracking up? I found what looks like a local park a ways down from my base camp. I great spot to fish, some picnic tables and a "magic" grill. Seriously, it is magical. It is like a vending machine. It automatically ignites, then a generated list of recipes appears and I can choose what to grill. It has a wide range of choices. The food must be synthetic but it tastes great! What? Of course I ate it. I figure my "quick meals" will run out eventually and one can only eat so many potatoes without ending it all....so why not! The only problem is, the magic runs out and I seem to only be able to cook a meal randomly. I am checking every day. There is a nice mineral and fossil deposit nearby so it's worth the effort.


With my diet being so limited I must be careful on how many calories I burn but must also keep my stamina up. The gravity's pull much be must stronger here. That can be the only explanation for my difficulties in using this machine I pulled "out of the wreckage".

Well, you are not going to believe this one. If you leave a pile of trash lying around for too long....it sprouts! No. I am not kiddin' you. Seems to draw insects. I think I will get rid of it immediately.


Ouch!

Oh....potato skins! I have to cut my entry short. For some weird reason...I don't want to but some strange force is shutting down my PC.

What do you say to an angry 300-pound baked potato? Anything, just butter him up!

Work on the rocket continues. Slowly.


The toilet is breaking down often. I was able to do some makeshift repairs. No. Potatoes were not used.


I did some exploring and found this suspicious looking tree. Unbelievable but true, it has a portal to some sort of lush and pinkish hued atmosphere. Of course, I am not kidding. I was so shocked I forgot to take any pictures. I did some fishing and caught a strange plant....yes, I said caught a strange plant. In the name of science and botany, I planted it.


It grew. Rapidly. I am amazed and terrified at the same time. I feed it aquatic fishlike things I have caught in the stream behind my base camp. It likes to be petted. I am keeping my eye on it. It hasn't moved but has mooed.

Why did the potato cross the road? He saw a fork up ahead.
